Dawson City Airport Upgrade and possible relocation.
This would help Holland America bring in more tourist on bigger aircraft. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/...port-1.3269324 |
Landing on a non-paved airstrip must be a bumpy experience with rocks flying. :D
|
Honestly, I've never found the experience to be particularly different from a paved runway.

Big five airport YTD stats for August:
1. YYZ - 19,657,448 +7.0% (from July) 2. YVR - 13,867,398 +4.7% 3. YUL - 10,643,774 +4.3% 4. YYC - 10,473,485 +1.7% 5. YEG - 4,908,177 -1.1% |
FBO is absolutely killing YEG.
|
I wonder if YYZ can keep this momentum...

so beginning December 27, 2015. Air China will commence their service to the caribbean - PEK-YUL-HAV on a Boeing 773.. only good news about this is that we'll see Air China 6 days a week at YUL. .
PEK1400-YUL1340 YUL1620-HAV2015 HAV0900(next day)-YUL1230 YUL1430-PEK 1730 +1 day http://airlineroute.net/2015/10/16/ca-hav-dec15/ |
LH CityLine to operate YUL-FRA next summer. Daily A343 (All white star alliance livery, no LH logo or markings due to labor issues with LH mainline). Also, MUC-YUL down to 6 weekly next summer compared to 7 in 2015. However, the A333s used on MUC-YUL next summer will carry 20 more seats compared to this year. (more Y, less J seats)
So overall, an increase in seats on Germany-YUL, but shows that premium demand out of YUL is simply not there. So LH Cityline in North and Central America will serve CUN, TPA, PTY, SJC, PHL, YUL and ATL (May and June only). http://airlineroute.net/2015/10/15/lh-s16update1/ |

Now that I was remembering, I have also flown on a propeller plane from Milford Sound to Queensland (New Zealand) and the landing was very casually on a field. I wonder if any jet engine planes can land on non-tarmac strips or will the rocks possess a problem for the engines?
|
727s and old 737s are often equipped to land on gravel strips. They have to be specially outfitted with a gravelkit to help prevent debris from flying up into the engines.

Passenger traffic at Gander International is up 27% this year with new flights from Provincial Airlines, SunWing, Air Canada, and WestJet.
Up 150% since 2007. Anticipating to feel the impact of weak economy in near future. |

The planes are equipped with a high pressure nozzle or pitot tube like device on the base of the engine and the noise wheel is usually equipped with a ski like device. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravelkit https://www.google.ca/search?q=737+G...ZXBbaNku_C0%3D |
I thought the high-bypass 737s (300 on) just had too little clearance for gravel strips, but I guess engineering finds a way.

Looks like another Chinese airline to YVR, this time it's Xiamen airlines flying Xiamen-Vancouver 4 times per week.
This is their first destination in North America and only their third outside of Asia, behind Sydney and Amsterdam. Quote:
