i dk, you can call developers that build 1500' towers a lot of things, but cheap would not be one of them. in this case quirky maybe? rigid? old skool? :shrug:

Build Chicago Spire in New York! I liked that design.

That's St. Jean Baptiste Church, a real beauty inside too. One of my Uncles had his practice across E 76th from there in the 80's (It's at E 76th & Lex). It was actually begun as a Francophone church and still fulfills that mission somewhat today: http://stjeanbaptisteny.org/about-us/history/

Central Park Tower would mean a lot more to the average person if it had a public observation deck that would be the highest in the United States. To me that is one thing that has kind of changed, it used to be that observation decks and/or a restaurant/bar would be a given in the tallest building in such a major city like NYC even if there was residential space in the building (like the John Hancock Center in Chicago), now it seems the super rich don't even like the idea that there is a floor above their penthouse open to ordinary people. That is what I sorta lament. That being said I still consider the Central Park Tower to be a very significant skyscraper as it will be the first skyscraper in the United States to surpass Chicago's Willis Tower in roof and highest occupied floor height.

Barnett reportedly flirted with the idea of an observation deck, but wisely decided against that - the residents he are targeting for this building are far different than residents of the Hancock Center. As far as the public is concerned, this tower will have a large store at the base (Nordstrom), and many will know it mainly for that. There are other observation decks going up around town, including in a proposal for a tower taller than this one.

Don't worry, Tower Fifth will be at least 1 ft taller than Central Park Tower and it will have an observation deck.

Didn't one of the construction doc's have CPT as 1569'? Shouldn't be too hard to raise the parapet to that height or more in any case.

If Tower Fifth doesn't get Barnett to break out the spire, nothing will.

All he needs is a modest 270' spire (shorter than originally proposed) to take the "crown" from Tower Fifth, 1 WTC and the CN Tower in one fell swoop.

Barnett has a number of future supertall sites around Midtown.

If he wants to unseat Macklowe, he'll have multiple opportunities.
