Exactly. Putting stupid restrictions that don't accomplish anything isn't the way to go. Coronaviruses mutate. This is a fact. We know this already. There are probably several strains of the virus around the world already, and even here in Canada. Restricting flights form the UK to Canada for 72 hours is nothing more than posturing. It accomplishes nothing.

Wear a mask, wash your hands often, social distance, and get vaccinated. These are what people - and the government - should do/preach. If people want to travel to the UK and back, let them. Biontech/Pfizer has tested it's vaccine on 20 different variants and is confident its product works on all of them.

We still have idiots here refusing to wear masks in airports/planes. Mostly in Alberta. WestJet is the hardest hit airline.

Here's a list of all the airlines and the number of fines and warnings that have been issued by TC to date for mask refuals: https://www.narcity.com/en-ca/travel...e-on-1-airline

Raise your hand if you're shocked that the Alberta-based airline has had to deal with the most problems. :notacrook:

It is not posturing. It is buying time. 72 hours provides time for Canadian health officials to review the UK data and determine if the ban should continue, be modified or lowed to expire.

The Biontech/Pfizer announcement occurred within that 72 time period as they reviewed their drug against the reports from the UK. That is the type of information they are trying to get to support a decision. Even Biotech said their finding were preliminary and in the coming days they would have a better understanding.

I am shocked it is WS. Are there differences between the SOP that the WS check-in, gate and in flight staff are following that is causing this to escalate to the point where enforcement is required.

YYC November stats

Domestic 251,670 -71.4%
Transborder 19,853 -92.8%
International 11,626 -91.5%
November Total: 283,149 -78.1%
Year to date: 5,374,378 -67.46%

First month of the border pilot program and YYC had a combined 31,000+ international pax. I predict December will be in the 45,000-50,000 range. Overall November was a pretty solid month given the circumstances.

WestJet has now cancelled LGW December 24-January 5. WS3 departs tonight from YYZ but it’s inbound on Thursday is cancelled.

The ban had just been extended to Jan 6.

I guess WS already got the information before today's announcement...

Is it a ban on travel by anyone who has been in the UK or just flights from the UK.

If it is just flights then anyone who wants to come here from the UK will need to make their way over to an intermediate country that is still open to UK flights and then connect to Canada.

Update: To prevent the new variant of COVID-19 from spreading in Canada, we’re extending the temporary suspension of passenger flights from the UK for another two weeks, until January 6th. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and do whatever it takes to keep you safe

Useless measures. Won’t accomplish anything. The new strain is already here.

That has not been proven.

Regardless, it should have been obvious the "island model" of New Zealand, Australia and Taiwan was the best chance at beating back Covid. None of Canada's loosey-goosey approach to letting people fly in and out.

Sure, but are you really clinging to that argument?

Even Fauci is saying the new strain is probably already in the US/Canada.

and btw, Canada doesn't have a loosey goosey approach. It's the US that has one. (ex. Canadians can fly to the US, but aren't able to drive to the US)

Our bans are pretty straightforward. We're not an island nation like NZ, Australia or Taiwan. Had we been, maybe the bans would have been more severe.

All of this being said, this particular ban with the UK, is useless. No two ways about it. Even if we assume the strain isn't in North America, the fact that the US probably won't ban flights from the UK means the strain is coming here, one way or another.

I think they just proactively cancelled two weeks worth of flights assuming it will get extended. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them further cancel their flights right through January.

Sure we have loosey goosey approach. What's point of quarantine if they allow you to connect through multiple domestic flights when coming back from abroad? And the whole system is based on trust with occasional phone checks that are so easy to get around. What's the point of UK ban, or ban from a specific region if you can just connect through the US to get around it?

The whole quarantine should've been done at the port of entry, where the border control send you straight to the quarantine facility (at your own cost) before you even have a chance to make any contact with anyone who's not quarantining. But then the situation here is already bad enough before they even started doing anything...

Anything that might slow it down coming to Canada is better than sitting on your hands and doing nothing . . .

Looks like AC will resume YYZ-LHR tomorrow but flights from YVR/YUL have been cancelled until January. I guess they went the BA route, carrying pax to the UK and only cargo back?

nname Dec 24, 2020 8:30 PM

Looks like Qatar will increase DOH-YUL to daily starting late Feb next year. So there's bilateral update I suppose?

This supposedly ties in with the codeshare announced with AC.

There must be, but there's been no announcement by Transport Canada.

It's only scary if you picture it being that way. I think nname is referring to international arriving pax should have to head straight to designated airport hotels for 14 days to quarantine. That way all pax can be properly monitored. Evidently this hasn't happened, and it's been 90% on the honour system.
