Not the point of the post, I know, but is that somebody's HOUSE at the entrance to the air terminal?

SignalHillHiker Oct 3, 2016 10:27 PM

Yeah. :haha: There's a whole line of houses there along what used to be the road leading to the back side of airport (Radio Range Road; the old terminal was at the other end of the runway, so this area was suitable for building back then). They were grandfathered in. New development is separated a little, you can see on the left side.

You manage to get a picture of it at the gate? I would like to see it dwarfing the 767 next to it.

Quebec City's airport terminal expansion as of June 2016.

It would be awesome to see TAP in YUL. We were discussing this on airliners last week. I posted that YUL would surely be among the contenders for the NA route.

I think YYZ would have gotten the service first had it not been for AC already serving the route....

LeftCoaster Oct 12, 2016 10:24 PM

Well that's great news for YUL. Any chance it would be one of TAPs new A320NEOs?

At 5,250 KM, LIS-YUL is well within their range...

What a coincidence! Just flew out of there earlier this week. Beautiful airport, very modern and easy to use.

Most likely ? But we have to wait and see ...even if they begin in 2018 ....transat is increasing to 4 weekly next year ...I think. .... I can see Air Canada rouge doing 3 weekly YUL-LIS ...We'lll see !! But would love to see TAP Back.

TAP get their A320/A321NEOs only in the 3rd quarter of 2018. So if they are launching YUL next year, it will be with the A332.

No offence to any Montrealers here, but I wouldn't jump to any conclusions about TAP... :)

Although there is more competition out of YYZ, demographics would suggest the GTA, by about a 5:1 margin https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_Canadians

plus it's the larger Star Alliance hub.... one of my contacts told me they were adding YYZ, although that was a few months ago back in the spring.....

If I'm not mistaken, the GTA has the largest Portuguese diaspora in NA (or second largest - can't remember). Either way, you're right that YYZ would be the most likely destination in Canada to begin with, competition on the route not being a huge factor. The *A hub factor would play big into this, as you mentioned.

What I could see is year-round to YYZ and seasonal to YUL, much in the same way SATA (or whatever they're called now) does it.

kwoldtimer Oct 13, 2016 2:12 PM

Is it a given that a TAP service would be to Lisbon, or might it be to the Azores?

For YUL it would surely be to Lisbon. Azores Airlines already flies seasonal out of YUL.

You have YYZ-LIS service from Rouge and SATA (I think the total frequencies exceed 7x pw).

From a competitive perspective, YUL makes more sense - a fight against SATA is a lot less damaging than a fight against AC at its fortress hub AND SATA Then again, *A hub, countless connection opportunities through AC... YYZ would likely have better yields.

We will wait and see I guess.

SATA is summer seasonal 1x weekly on LIS-PDL-YUL service. Not a threat at all. TS poses more of a threat against future TAP service, since they fly non stop to the Portuguese mainland several times a week.

LeftCoaster Oct 13, 2016 6:09 PM

TS is a point to point threat for sure but SATA has a great connection bank in LIS. Should do very well.

Would be interesting if they start 3xPW on the A330-200 then go daily with an A321-NEO.

flipv Oct 13, 2016 7:27 PM

It's likely yyz from a business case perspective. I also heard that's the next NA destination for them a few months ago. Local media is notoriously unreliable for these news.

Those numbers are outdated ! there are way more than 46,000 Portuguese living in Montreal ...i am Canadian born but my parents are Portuguese ...anyway it's getting more popular ...5 weekly flights to Portugal summer only ...5 to LIS 1 to PDL ...i won't be surprised if TAP would choose YUL....there's a Portuguese news segment that I think is on once a week here in Montreal and there has been a lot of complaining in the Portuguese community as there are no winter flights to Portugal .. people hate going through YYZ...just saying....
