medieval building --> modern house

those other conversions looked pretty good I guess, but this one looks a whole lot more finished or polished somehow:

Quote:

Located in the core part of Girona’s medieval quarter and overlooking the Plaça de Sant Domènec, Spain, this is a property called Alemanys 5 within an original building dating back to the sixteenth century. The house has been recently renovated by architect Anna Noguera and has and incredible design which integrates old and new, integrates traditional and contemporary elements:

i agree! remods can be ugly too, but that looks fantastic!

the only thing i dislike sometimes is that they fail to add any greenery! add a small potted tree or two!

I love that earthy old rock work, like the rock was just dug up on site and mortared together without much processing. Looks great with wood beams and floors.

After working on a number of reconstruction projects post-tsunami in Sri Lanka, renowned architect Shigeru Ban was commissioned to build a private residence on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Built of concrete, local teak and coconut leaves, the home is a cantilevered, open-air beauty with framed views of the surrounding landscape. Shade screens and operable shutters keep out the sun and heat but encourage air to naturally flow through the open spaces.

Patkau Architects - Linear House in Salt Spring Island, British Columbia
Monday, 09 May 2011 13:07

Linear House is located on a sixteen acre farm on Salt Spring Island, an island in the Strait of Georgia between Vancouver Island and the mainland of British Columbia, Canada. The property is bisected from east to west by a long row of mature Douglas fir trees. There is a gentle slope falling across the site from south to north. The south half of the site is an orchard containing a variety of fruit trees; the north half of the property is a hay field. There was an existing cottage on the property which has been sold and relocated to a neighbouring property. The existing barn, garage and studio buildings remain.

ruins --> modern house

Quote:

The massive stone walls of the original home were doomed to failure as they were set on top of a sandy foundation and further eroded by treasure hunters searching for buried gold. A century later the home was abandoned to the whims of the coast until a couple decided that it would be the perfect backbone for a new house.

The first job was to firm up the home’s stone walls and foundation. The new home huddles within the confines of the immense walls and branches out with a glass-lined living room at the home’s core. The other wing is buffeted by a large dry stacked stone wall. Lighter materials such as wooden beams and steel provide basic building elements while reducing the energy needed to ship materials to the site.

Designed by Barcelona-based Minim Interior Design Studio, the residence located in Spain’s Priorat Wine Region showcases a rustic atmosphere accentuated by the balanced use of modern furnishings. The building used to be an old mill, but the architects transformed it into an interesting residence while respecting the original space. Trying to overcome the building’s shortcomings, the architects included “a bold “sculpture-staircase” in order to organize the building internally.”

Casa Torcida by SPG Architects

Posted by Dave on July 6th, 2011

SPG Architects designed the Casa Torcida in Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica.

Description from the architects:
SPG Architects transformed an abandoned steel frame and concrete slab structure into a five-level, 18000 SF, indoor-outdoor residence on a rain-forested mountainside overlooking the Golfo Dulce. The house is environmentally sensitive, technologically advanced, and modernist by design. A flexible building perimeter provides a seamless flow from inside to out that completely blends the built environment with the natural setting and the spectacular views. The house is energy self-sufficient – appliances and lighting were chosen for low power consumption that is sourced by photovoltaic cells on the roof. Solar hot water panels provide domestic hot water. Maximizing cross ventilation and ample overhangs have eliminated the need for air conditioning in this year-round tropical climate. As a result, this house is an indigenous yet distinctly modern piece of architecture.

- The roof lines were inspired both by the organic shell forms of the marine environment but also by the ubiquitous dhow sails seen all over the Quirimbas on the local fishing vessels. Such a roof was seen to introduce more interest and uniqueness and will be very responsive to cooling from the prevailing winds. The interlocking forms of the roofs provide additional shading on the north sides of the gables, and the sloping angle of the ridge line aids with passive cooling by allowing the warmer air to move along the ridge line and out of the gables.

takeshi hirobe architects: m house

japanese practice takeshi hirobe architects has sent us images of 'm-house', a three-storey house in a busy neighbourhood of tokyo, japan. abiding by the strict building regulation of the site, the design aims to connect the interior with the exterior while maintaining privacy for the inhabitants.

during the early stages of the designing process, an octagonal staircase was inserted into the floor plan as a major structural pillar to the house. constructed with reinforced concrete, the spiral stairwell is topped with a roof light which allows is to double-function as a lightwell. the interior surfaces are also finished in white to maximize the natural daylighting effect, bringing it all the way down to the basement. round holes of various sizes are randomly perforated on the sides of the shell to establish internal visual connections to each floor.
