Bourne, NY - an SU city

So I started a new city. This will be a very slow project, but hopefully a long lasting one. To save time, I'm reusing my Rocane textures again. For close-up shots I try to utilize the components I made to make those textures. Other thing that will help save time, is that this city is based on a real city layout.

City's name is Bourne and it is located in the state of New York right at the eastern end of Lake Ontario, about 40 miles north of Syracuse. Bourne metropolitan area has a population of about a million, so it would be the fourth largest population center in the state, if it was a real city (behind Rochester, Buffalo and NYC, of course).

A map of the city:

Here's the first render - a view looking northwest on West Adams Street. This area, just a few blocks north of downtown, was once an integral part of the main business core, but it was cut off of it in the early 1960's with the completion of the Lake Ontario Freeway. It has lacked development since.

Thanks for the comments, guys! Man, I always knew this was going to be a very slow project, but didn't realize it was going to be this slow. But finally, here's an update.

This picture is a view from West Jefferson Street looking northwest. These buildings are the northernmost of the CBD.

Wow. Really like the level of the deatil you do in every single building. Keep it up!

Wow!

Both of those buildings are amazing. Is that bump mapping on the textures?

Pingyao Feb 15, 2010 8:51 AM

Damn thats sexy! I'm not surprised its taking so long to build, the level of detail is high. You'll probably kill sketchup before you complete one block. Indecently how big is Bourne, can you show us an aerial view?

Flamesrule Feb 15, 2010 12:45 PM

Are you basing this city off of a town called Hershey, PA?

It looks a lot like it.

very good start! it's nice to see you with a new citiy. i liked your previous ones very much and hope this one will become as big as rocane :-P

Thanks for the comments! Sorry, no update this time - just replying.

The model might seem very complex, but that's just an illusion I'm trying to create. In the main model all the buildings are just 100% textured. For the renderings I do some "staging". In the renders the closest building will allways be 100% geometry - or to be accurate, just the side(s) seen in the shot is. One or two next closest buildings will be about half and half textures and geometry. The more distant buildings are just textured with reflection maps. I might also use bump maps on occasion, but in those first two renders no bump maps were used. The textures are just well contrasted. The making of different versions of the same building with different levels of detail is a bit of extra work, but I think it's well worth it - hopefully I'll be able to model a large city, but still give good-looking street level renders.

No, not based on Hershey. The layout and the zoning are based on a real city, but the looks aren't. After all, I'm using my Rocane textures, which were influenced by buildings in a bunch of different cities.

I'm building Bourne in sections and will give you an aerial after each section is finished. I have still work to do on the first section, but I have over half done.
