San Francisco: Southern FiDi (mostly)
Below is a collection of photos I've taken over the past couple of weeks. They are mostly in and around the southern end of the Financial District, except where otherwise noted.
Viewpoints where buildings layer one on top of each other are very appealing to me, and I've been trying to capture a variety of these recently. San Francisco's street grid gives ample opportunity for these views due to the way everything north of Market is aligned almost perfectly north/south and east/west, while everything south of Market is aligned at about a 45 degree angle to this. Unfortunately, I'm just a hack using a snapshot camera, but hopefully some of these give a flavor of how cool some of these viewpoints can be. Looking north up First St. from Mission toward Market: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1102/...a2d694ef_b.jpg Looking north up Anthony St. from Mission. That's the bottom of Pelli's JP Morgan Building on the right and you can see the top of BofA in the back. Sorry it's so blown out. Amateur. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1269/...54a87c85_b.jpg Looking up Fremont from Mission toward Market: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1101/...35d6d589_b.jpg A view from Mission toward Market near Main St. My brother calls 101 California (the roundish one in the back) the big beer can. I can see why, but I still like it. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1244/...3540f759_b.jpg Hobart and 44 Montgomery as seen from Mission looking up Second St: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1254/...26497a0a_b.jpg The towers march north along Kearny. We're moving closer to the heart of the Financial District in the next few shots: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1338/...e88a2c6f_b.jpg I've always liked the Shell Building: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1193/...bd30f02e_b.jpg Despite its stature (and perhaps because of it) this little building really stands out along Market: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1073/...159fb0d9_b.jpg Back to the southern end of the Financial District, this is looking north over the Transbay Terminal toward the under-construction Millennium Tower and 50 Fremont (on the left): http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1142/...faa389c9_b.jpg Looking north along First St., like the first picture but from a vantage point further south and three stories up: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1011/...afb4eff6_b.jpg Now we're looking almost due south at some of the buildings along the waterfront. One Rincon is rising in the background: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1337/...cbcc9d4a_b.jpg A wider view, just because I like seeing the water: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1119/...ed82248c_b.jpg Another waterfront view: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1306/...f6c6f9c1_b.jpg Here, we're looking at the Financial District from the other side, seeing the northern end: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1427/...4adfbf16_b.jpg Looking back from the ferry, facing due south: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1162/...ff9a4717_b.jpg Goodbye from San Francisco (random shot that has nothing to do with the rest of the thread, but I wanted to post it): http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1280/...ef123674_b.jpg Hope you enjoyed these. Thanks for viewing to the end! |
Nice photos (I like "layer" shots, too :)). I've always loved the view up Fremont (#3) as I used to walk that route every evening. I found it most impressive in fall or winter, when it gets dark early but there are people still working in the offices... It's like a wall of lights on the opposite side of Market.

Great pics! I've always liked the San Francisco skyline, despite the fact it's been held back by nimby's for so many years. There are plenty of 'scraper canyon's to look at while walking around downtown. I look forward to seeing the transbay tower and surrounding buildings go up over the next decade, then it will finally take it's rightful place as 3rd best skyline in the US.

Great shots! I like the reflections off the glass.

I don't know what it is about the buildings in San Francisco but I love them all. Great thread.

Thanks for the comments!

Great pictures of San Francisco. I've seen countless pictures of San Francisco's skyline, but I didn't realize that it was as dense as it is in those first few pictures.

eerie! this looks just like water street in lower manhattan, near the standard and poor building. i have no picture to compare with, but the building size, the arc of the street, the scale, it's THE SAME:

It reminds me a little bit of Toronto. Great shots.
I'll be up there in one week. I'm looking forward to walking around the Financial District. |
