Portland's "Hood" - Huge thread!
As part of a series of community development courses I'm taking, I will being doing a project with Sabin CDC, which creates affordable housing and job/skill training and youth development in North/Northeast Portland, the area of Portland that comes closest to being a ghetto. Even so, it's not all that bad. The neighborhoods in this area have great pre-war housing stock, and are very diverse. As far as I know, the area is mostly populated by the historic African-American community, working class whites, growing Hispanic, Southeast Asian, and East African population, as well as educated, young adults. Parts of North/Northeast Portland have been gentrifying in the last decade, especially the Alberta street corridor that you will see in this thread. With access to PDC funds, many new small businesses have sprung up in the neighborhood, many of which cater to a new, younger, well, yuppy clientele. It's a very interesting case study, and probably the only chance we'll get to see it in this transition phase unless the diversity is somehow maintained.

We start downtown

Hop on the yellow line

Get off on NE Killingsworth

Cross I-5

Now we're on Alberta Street, Sabin CDC

At a meeting with commissioner Sam Adams!

Now we head back south on MLK

Poor fella...

Lloyd District

Lloyd Center, Oregon's biggest mall, right in the Lloyd District

The end, hopefully there will be more Portland to come, I have a bunch of pics stored up from throughout this fall. Hope you enjoyed!

Love that one.

Still fondly remember my stay at the Lloyd Center Doubletree.

Great pics! I love Portland

Great pics. I always forget how low-density Portland is outside of its downtown.

ArchMadness Dec 12, 2006 8:17 PM

Looks like my kind of town. Its good to see a real working class hood, pacific nw style.

It's medium density. The area around Lloyd Centre has lots of condos, and other areas near downtown (south and west) have lots of multifamily.

NE Portland, when I was a student at Reed College in the 80s, was no-go almost end to end- even the now-trendy area near Lloyd was rough. It is amazing, miraculous, to me to see Alberta and MLK and Killingsworth so vibrant like this!

Thanks for a great thread!

Good to see another side of Portland...

double post

From a standpoint of presenting a snapshot of the neighborhood, I can understand this image, as it puts the poor critter in context. You can easily interpret it as an "Only in Portland" moment, or perhaps you could take away a different message.

But the second image is just gratuitous. One out-of-place photo can ruin a perfectly good thread.

Nice to see that others can't resist doing this. :)

Thanks for the comments!

Vertex, point well taken, I took that second pic out ;)

furrycanucks, no kidding about the changes that have taken place in such a short time. I wasn't in Portland back in the eighties or nineties, but have heard stories about how bad it was.

Great tour, glad to see there's a working class side to the Pacific NW gem. Thanks.

Excellent! The best threads are of the lesser known neighbourhoods!!! Very cool!!! looks like an Ethiopian and Pacific Islander immigrant group in that area??
