Greater Napanee
The Greater Napanee area has been greatly underrepresented here, so I thought to include some recent and ongoing projects in Napanee that are remaking the town. Napanee has a long and interesting history and has been developing dynamically over the past several years.
There are some exciting new developments and projects in Napanee including Diggin' Downtown, expansion of the Napanee Generating Station, two new hotel developments, installation of windmills on Amherst Island, redesign of the two 401 on/off ramps for Napanee, infrastucture developments, and the $45 million expansion plans for ABcann Global. "Greater Napanee is a part of the County of Lennox & Addington in the heart of Eastern Ontario. Conveniently situated along Highway 401, our borders stretch from the shores of the Bay of Quinte on Lake Ontario north to Roblin, the western gateway to the Land O'Lakes region. Greater Napanee is a vibrant, historic town with a population of 15,892 making it a great place to live, work and play." - About Greater Napanee https://www.greaternapanee.com/en/li...er-Napanee.jpg Source: Town of Greater Napanee, https://www.greaternapanee.com/en/li...r-napanee.aspx Major Projects: Diggin' Downtown Napanee https://external-yyz1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...CI2EJzE9SZE1qM Source: Diggin' Downtown Napanee, https://www.facebook.com/DiggingDowntown/ The first phase of the project is anticipated to begin in April. The pictures are actually impressive. :D

So black traffic lights, like downtown Kingston.

Very nice. But how can Napanee afford to do something like that?

ABcann Global Napanee Expansion
Back in October 2017, Abcann Global broke ground on a $40-45 million expansion of its existing Vanluven site and future Kimmet facility.
"The Kimmett facility will be constructed on a 65 acre property that is wholly-owned by the Company and located very close to ABcann's existing Vanluven production facility in Napanee. Our existing acreage provides ABcann the opportunity to continue expansion post Phase 1 construction of up to 1,200,000 square feet of production space." - ABcann Global, http://www.abcannglobal.com/Kimmett-Facility.php Proposed Site: https://d229rh02mq3yno.cloudfront.ne...855/Abcann.gif Source: Private Capital NewsWire http://www.abcannglobal.com/assets/map-NapaneeSites.jpg Source: ABcann Global, http://www.abcannglobal.com/Kimmett-Facility.php http://www.abcannglobal.com/assets/K...minary-980.jpg http://www.abcannglobal.com/assets/K...minary-980.jpg http://www.abcannglobal.com/assets/K...minary-980.jpg |
Napanee Generating Station
The proposed Napanee Generating Station is a 900-megawatt (MW), combined cycle, natural gas-fuelled electricity generating station located in the Town of Greater Napanee, County of Lennox and Addington, in Ontario.
The Napanee Generating Station will be designed as a flexible system resource able to be started and stopped daily and to vary its output to bridge the gap between Ontario’s electricity demand and the other available generating resources. The Napanee Generating Station (NGS) will help ensure greater reliability of Ontario’s electrical system by providing a reliable source of power to assist in meeting the daily supply needs of the province. NGS has been designed as a flexible system resource with the ability to start and stop daily and to vary its output to help meet Ontario’s electricity demand. The facility will be located adjacent to the existing Ontario Power Generation Lennox Generating Station site in the southern portion of the Town of Greater Napanee, in the County of Lennox and Addington. By siting the station at this location, NGS is able to share several services with Lennox Generating Station including electrical and natural gas connections, water intake and discharge facilitates, and other infrastructure services. NGS will use the latest in generating and environmental controls technology which will make it one of the most efficient and cleanest generating stations in Ontario. TransCanada has been engaging with local stakeholders since October 2012 and has completed environmental studies which indicate that NGS will have little or no effect on the environment and surrounding community, both during construction and operations. Engagement with community residents and stakeholders will continue throughout the construction and operations phases of the project. There's Toronto. But Napanee is Greater.

I'd like to know if those pedestrian crossings are actual stone or indented asphalt made to look like stone? They look really good. Here in Cobourg we have indented asphalt on some of the actual road but they weren't painted with that red colour, if that's what Napanee did, so it doesn't stand out as much. |
Phase 2 - Diggin' Downtown Napanee

Update from Gibbard District
Here are a few photos of mine from the most recent site excavation of Gibbard District in Napanee. Reports indicate that more than 72% of the units have sold and that the foundation for the new structure will be laid before the end of the year.

Napanee Mall Redevelopment
PlazaComm has been in the process of upgrading Napanee Mall. This mall historically had several small commercial vendor retail spaces (some of which remain) but has now been consolidated into a floor plan that allows for larger commercial retail space. Both Dollarama and Planet Fitness now occupy the larger commercial spaces of the redeveloped portion. The mall is anchored by NoFrills, Rexall, CIBC, PetValu, the Beer Store, with plans for other commercial outlets to be built (i.e. Jiffy Lube, a potential fast-food franchise, etc.).

Is that an indoor mall or a strip mall? The mall here in Cobourg is basically dead. They've been transitioning to to more of a big box style retail which is too bad. Small malls seem to be getting squeezed out.
|
Very true, TownGuy! Malls in general appear to be on the decline but with a population of approx. 20,000 Napanee still needs a consolidated location for shopping, gas, etc.
The Napanee mall pre-renovation has numerous small stores and a central court as well but this has now been changed to a big box format. From my understanding you can still enter the Napanee Mall and access the bank and pet store and a few smaller retail spots. Are you referring to the Northumberland Mall in Cobourg? I am surprised it is dying given its proximity to the 401 and new subdivisions. I think the future of malls are uncertain for sure. |
