How much do you expect the CBSA strikes to impact ops at airports?

Alexcaban Aug 4, 2021 10:13 PM

Looks like Air France is adding PTP-YUL twice weekly starting November 23rd.

Flight would operate with an A320.

Best of luck to them. Norwegian couldn’t make it work, but they had to establish a base in the Caribbean, which added to the overall cost of operations. AF already has a base in the Caribbean. AC will probably still try to run them out of the market though. TS is on the route as well, so AF will be the 3rd player.

Not much, considering the depressed passenger numbers at the airports. Land border crossings might be more affected though.

In YEG this morning, definite uptick in passengers. Terminal is mostly open now. Parking is almost full and the stored aircraft are mostly gone. Last time through was the end of May early June.

Still nothing compared to 2019.

First 6 months of this year YEG handled 692,000 passengers. (-61% compared to 2020)

In 2019 they would have been around the 4 million mark by June.

Pre-pandemic, 692k was an average monthly pax total for YEG.

I think we’ll start to see a steady recovery now that we’ll be able to receive transborder and international flights again, as well as seeing an uptick in domestic travel. It won’t be 2019 levels, but I’m happy to see it go in a more positive direction 😊

WS launched AMS last night with very good load factors. It marks the first time the airline launches a new destination on its 787 as well.

Be curious if they manage to get more long-term slots and can deepen its relationship with KL.

And here's the arrival. Hopefully there was a water cannon salute but not on this video.

How ironic, the airline that owes its existence to the monopoly position originally granted it on a piece of federal property (YTZ) has not only passed up the homegrown plane in favour of Embraer but now has inked a 20 year old deal to maintain them in the USA. All after getting $270 in guaranteed loans courtesy of the Cdn taxpayer. The sooner PD goes under the better.

Porter Airlines, Embraer sign 20-year deal to service new fleet of jets in U.S.

Porter Airlines’ new fleet of Embraer jets will be serviced and repaired by the plane maker in the United States, the Brazilian manufacturer says.

Toronto-based Porter has signed a 20-year contract with Embraer to maintain its new planes at Embraer’s facilities in Nashville and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., an agreement that covers the airframe’s maintenance and access to the manufacturers’ pool of components and repair services, Embraer said on Thursday...

It's not like what they did is illegal. Sure it would have been nice for them to order the CSeries and maintain them here in Canada, but at the end of the day, it was a business decision, not a political one. Their CSeries LOI was conditional on getting approval for jet ops at YTZ. That will never happen. So they chose a better - read cheaper - deal for themselves. Plus more favorable delivery slots for the Ejets vs the CSeries. The maintenance for the Ejets in the States is also a cheaper option. Tennessee and Florida are States with right-to-work laws, meaning no unions, meaning cheaper labor.

Why do you think Boeing and Airbus opened final assembly lines (FAL) in Charleston, North Carolina and Mobile, Alabama, 2 other States with right-to-work laws. Airbus even has a FAL in China. All in search of cheaper labor compared to Seattle, Toulouse, Hamburg, etc.

With the easing of border restrictions for the fully vaccinated, UA moved up their return to YOW with IAD re-starting tomorrow. This will be the first scheduled international pax flight at YOW in almost 14 months.

Denscity Aug 7, 2021 9:08 PM

Looks like there's a plan to expand the post security holding area of the terminal at YCG. There are only 40 seats so the new Q400 service makes it quite cramped just before boarding.

Yeah it appears to have been a dummy flight on the YOW FIDS. I was looking on my phone, so the gate number is not visible from such a small device…was listed as gate 0! The Airport Authority does dummy flights sometimes as tests. Maybe it was to reload IAD in anticipation of the first real flight a few weeks from now.

These aircraft pick up a lot of the flights to the northern mines, Ft Mac and Kitimat.

Quick trip to Whitehorse last week. Quite surprised how busy Eric Neilson Airport was. Lots of tourist up there already. Even though technically the territory only opened the boarders to tourist on Thursday. Flight was half full at 6am coming back to YEG.

YEG Pax numbers will definitely uptick. I've been through the airport about 8 times over the last 18 months and have to say this last trip was quite different. Have a trip to Terrace next week, will be interesting to see how YVR changed in the last few months.

And Air North is a good way to get up, you actually get service and food on the flight.

Coldrsx Aug 9, 2021 11:11 PM

YYZ was around 50-70 capacity today with our plane full enrolee to YYC on an Max8 (which I thoroughly liked.

Walked into the international terminal from my domestic with it about 30-40% open and quickly asked to move down to the lower level.
