Lots more WestJet added, one more Air Canada added, and this is a domestic traveller so it contradicts my general impression.

EDIT: Nevermind, I forgot he's an O'Hara who ISN'T from Newfoundland. lol Mainlander. So his impression doesn't contradict mine.

Also, his complaint is that WestJet doesn't have executive lounges at all the airports, so it's kind of proving the Air Canada BS indirectly. :haha:

I'm having difficulties understanding you.

I just find Air Canada so... pretentious, condescending. I'm treated like an annoying freeloader because my final destination isn't TO or MTL.
...really - not convinced!

I've been told, "I don't know, that's not my job" and scoffed at. I've gone from the taxi to my seat without getting eye contact or a smile.
... book on line - pull boarding passes online - when boarding with ID they're required to positively identify. What does a smile matter??

I try, every time, to go in with an open mind and they just ruin it. They bring out the worst in me. By the end of it I want to punch someone and just yell, "You're a fucking clerk from Oshawa, get over yourself and learn some fucking manners you stuck up ****!" - and I hate feeling that way, and becoming someone who feels that way. It's so out of character for me but Air Canada just... provokes it so effortlessly.

...I don't believe you - that's violent and they deserve better than being called a 'fucking clerk'.
I think you have a problem.

SignalHillHiker May 9, 2014 4:18 AM

It's O.K. I don't expect anyone to really understand. It's just an awful experience, every time. And it's consistently a problem with that one airline. I've never encountered that disinterested smugness from the staff of any other airline, not even once. Yet, while there are exceptions with Air Canada, that completely pretentious, condescending attitude is the most common one I encounter.

You can believe it, understand it, or not. Doesn't really mean anything to me? It's my experience. And it's a common enough experience that this seems to be the airline's general reputation in much of Canada.

ue May 9, 2014 5:06 AM

Saying someone has a problem is a bit counter-productive. For what it's worth, I know exactly what SHH is talking about and even the aspects of Air Canada's service he's had to deal with that I haven't, I can believe just based on my own experiences with them.

A smile is just good customer service. Of course, not everyone working on an Air Canada flight needs to be all smiley and whatnot, but it doesn't hurt. What does hurt is getting treated poorly by staff, which only worsens opinions of the company, especially when it isn't just one attendant perhaps having a bad day.

I agree a smile is worth while - my major disagreement with SHH was condescension - you cannot call someone a 'fucking clerk from Oshawa' while at the same time complaining about condescension. It was verbal anger and condescension combined.

ue May 9, 2014 5:24 AM

^ His remark isn't something he verbalized and he even stated that he doesn't like having such thoughts. The only reason why he would have such thoughts was because he was provoked by the attitudes of Air Canada employees.

eemy May 9, 2014 11:21 AM

Honestly, I kind of wonder if it has to do with preconceived notions of how you expect to be treated and thus you gauge your experience by a different rubric than you otherwise would with Westjet where your expectations are much more positive. I quite honestly have never experienced what you are describing on Air Canada, and it's not like I'm not a regular flyer, so this is really perplexing to me. I'm not picking on you either SHH, you're not the first person I've encountered with that perspective, even here in Ontario.

jmt18325 May 9, 2014 1:18 PM

I feel the same way actually. I've had a pleasant experience with both Air Canada and Westjet every single time. Delta, on the other hand.

esquire May 9, 2014 2:05 PM

I've always felt well treated by AC. I mean, not every trip has gone 100% smoothly but that is often outside the control of the airline (bad weather, etc.). Of the many trips I've taken with AC over the years, I really can't think of one single instance where I felt that I was treated badly. Some things can be annoying like when there is a long lineup at the airport and you wonder why there can't be more wickets open or whatever, but that happens with every airline.

This attitude that SHH is talking about... I have never noticed that.

OTSkyline May 9, 2014 2:17 PM

Same here... I've had mostly good experiences from both Air Canada and WestJet... Don't know why people love to hate AC so much. Only big differences I see is:
Air Canada: better in-flight entertainment system
WestJet: 1st check-in bag is free!

On the other hand, I think Porter has great customer service and had great time flying with them, it's just a shame they don't fly much. They rather stick with the Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal area and a couple of Northern Ont. or US destinations.

Some fuckhead stole my kid's car seat from the carousel in Ottawa, and Westjet gave me a new one so I could take my kid home. Then said fuckhead returned it to the airport after realizing what they had done.. In the end I got to keep the Westjet car seat and got my original seat back.. plus a 100 dollar voucher for being inconvenienced. That was pretty awesome.

That's WestJet

MexiQuebecois May 9, 2014 10:39 PM

I never really had a problem with Air Canada. Their entertainment options are pretty good and overall I was treated with respect. There was this aura of "indifference" from the flight attendant, but service was quick. Her indifference is something normal when it comes to customer service in Canada IMO (me being Mexican and being used to a somewhat better experience in Mexico City).

Mister F May 9, 2014 10:50 PM

Westjet gave me the option of going back to the airport and getting the skis myself and a $100 voucher or having them deliver the skis and not getting the voucher. Friends of mine had the same thing happen with AC and they delivered the lost luggage and gave them a voucher. Score one for AC.

Confused delivery guy aside, I've never had anything but good service on both airlines.

I don't love to hate Air Canada, I've just had poor experience with them and thus prefer to use Westjet. Simple as that. YMMV.

As for Porter, I'd love to see them expand into Western Canada and add further competition to the Air Canada-Westjet stranglehold on Canadian airspace. Imagine cross country airfare not costing as much! Porter could help with that.

I fly quite a lot. My own thoughts:

- Air Canada is generally a very good airline. The rare time you get someone who is having a bad day. Maybe it they have some employees where every day is a bad day, The vast majority are quite nice and do smile. They have a tiered structure of service (Business Class Passengers and frequent flyers and others get special perks). That sometimes come across as being over the top, or arbitrary. However that said, those guys on passengers are also paying quite a bit more for their flight and in some way subsidising my low yielding flight. Air Canada has a much larger network that air Canada with a lot more flights. That generally means when something goes wrong their agents have more options to make it right.

- WestJet is friendly. Thankfully the have toned down the jokes and some of the childish/full staff and are now coming across as a more professional airline. Some of the worst delays I have ever had have been on WestJet (and I fly Air Canada far more). Part of their problem is until very recently they have had had larger planes with fewer flights, making it tougher to get things done.

- US Carriers. Service is replaced with computers and service is generally worse than either Air Canada or WestJet. The one exception is when a flight is delayed or cancelled there are focused on getting you on the next flight even if it is a competitor. Air Canada is more reluctant to move you to a non-star partner. WestJet is almost impossible to get them to reroute you onto a competitors airline to get you to where you need to be.

I don't care about $100 vouchers or if the staff are always smilling or not. For me it is about the seat being comfortable, getting to where I need to go on time and when they airline can't deliver my to my destination on time they go out of their way to reroute me.

As for lost luggage. Happens far less in Canada because of security rules after the Air India disaster. Half the time the contractor loading the bags onto the aircraft is a competing airline or some local airport services company. That probably has more to do with which city you pass through than the actual airline.

I have the impression that WestJet empowers their employees a bit more to "make things right" by handing out vouchers or car seats or whatever than Air Canada does. That does not mean that their service quality is any better. Until they start to interline with more airlines their staff are limited in what they can actually do to reroute passengers.

A good car example is Saturn. There cars were about the same quality as the rest of GM, they had happier customers buy putting up less resistance to fixing the mistakes for the fact.
