Hahahaha, yeah cost of living here isn't bad if you're a renter.

But I still find the cost of real estate to be absolutely bonkers.

Expansion of the International side. Will go from 11 gates to 17 I believe.

I was also surprised coming back from Cuba in Feb. The site is pretty big.

Porter Airlines has officially confirmed it's adding seasonal service to Stephenville.

Couldn't have asked for a better way to spend my study break, looking up potential vacation destinations thanks to Porter!

St. John's is not included in this run, though I hope a future flight will be added. Porter will fly into Stephenville on Saturday, the plane will overnight at YJT and then head back to Halifax on Sunday morning. The service will be same-plane service between Stephenville-Halifax-Ottawa-Toronto.

So this summer we have service to St. John's, St-Pierre, Toronto Pearson, Halifax, Ottawa and Toronto Billy Bishop! This is the best news we've had since the mill closed.

If any SSPers are looking at Newfoundland vacations this summer, Stephenville is 45 minutes from Corner Brook and only a couple hours driving from Gros Morne National Park, and it's a beauty drive in the summer! (Not so subtle plug).

Update for Regina, Sounds positive, both in terms of expansion and flights.

Gander Airport Terminal Looking to Downsize

It would be a shame to see the old terminal go. It's an iconic building that has hosted some of the most notable people people in history, from entertainers to royalty and Cuban dictators. In more recent times it has been used in photo shoots.

But even with growing passenger traffic, the number of people going through is still far below the glory days on the 50s and 60s when all transatlantic flights required stopovers in one of the 3 Newfoundland airports.

St. John's airport to double in size in $243M upgrade

A plan to spend $243 million over the next decade was revealed Tuesday, with details on new departure gates, more space in the departure lounge and upstairs concessions to serve those waiting for flights.

"We're bursting at the seams here," Neil Pittman, the chair of the St. John's International Airport Authority, told CBC News.

The authority announced its last expansion plan in 2011, but says it needs to be more ambitious to meet a surging demand.

About 1.5 million passengers pass through the airport each year — double what it had been in the late 1990s when the federal government turned ownership over to an independent board.

Double national average

Pittman said the airport will soon need to accommodate two million passengers per year, and is dealing with a 45 per cent increase in the number of available airline seats on flights that go through St. John's.

"These growth rates are twice that of the national average, and each year we continue to reach new levels and break our own records," he said.

The overhaul will start this summer, with the first phase focusing on the terminal's east side.

A bigger arrivals area is also planned, as well as a larger customs area for international flights.

Pittman defended the increase in the airport improvement fee, even though it will become one of the highest in the country.

"It's on par with the three major airports in Alberta," Pittman said in an interview, adding that those airports are facing similar challenges due to economic growth.

Work on the east side of the terminal will take about three years.

Further expansion work will start in 2017 and run until 2020.

The new plan includes moving concessions, including a full-service restaurant, to the second level. Pittman said in the wake of post-9/11 security measures, many passengers spend more time in departure lounges and need to have greater amenities.

Runway improvements will also increase the airport's usability by 5.1% from 93.8% to 98.9%.

Porter is now making some unfortunate waves in Newfoundland and Labrador.

A flight from Halifax to St. John's that was forced to land at Stephenville, Newfoundland, was simply ended there - stranding passengers 765 km from their destination.

This also sucks because it could put a damper on Porter's new service to the Canadian mainland out of Stephenville.
