I think this will be at the site of the former McDonnell Douglas facility..

The FAL is moving from Downsview to Pearson. I would think a good chunk of workers will simply relocate as well no?

WS does not hold any slot for MAN, and did not request any either.

Now checking all the slot request from Canadian airlines:

DUB:
AC requested and granted 2, which brings the total to 30:
-- YUL 4x weekly
-- YYZ 7x weekly
-- YVR 4x weekly
WS requested and granted 16, which brings to total to 34:
-- YHZ 6x weekly
-- YYC 3x weekly
---- 8x weekly leftover, so a new route for sure
TS - no change

MAN:
AC and TS - no change

LGW:
WS requested 14, granted 4, which brings the total to 62:
-- YHZ 7x weekly
-- YYZ 7x weekly
-- YYC 7x weekly
-- YVR 7x weekly
---- 3x weekly leftover
TS requested 2, but was denied, so total remains at 42
-- YYZ 14x weekly
-- YUL 5x weekly
-- YVR 3x weekly
---- TS would have to cut a weekly flight somewhere?

Will WS add flights to put those extra slots in use??

Funding troubles ground fledgling airline Canada Jetlines

The saga behind the ultra-low-cost carrier that has been planning to launch since 2012 involves alleged corporate scheming
By Glen Korstrom | December 4, 2019

https://biv.com/sites/default/files/...&itok=nW7jVB-k
Canada Jetlines CEO Stan Gadek left the airline in 2018 to return to his consulting company | Chung Chow

Launching a new airline is no easy task, as Canada Jetlines executives know well.

Starting in 2012, executives at the aspiring ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) have staggered between setbacks while struggling to secure financing for a capital-intensive takeoff.

The venture suffered bad timing as well as what significant shareholders allege was corporate scheming by a competitor – actions that prompted Jetlines to launch a lawsuit seeking US$27 million in compensation. Through it all, Jetlines’ executives have kept an optimistic face despite serious logistical hurdles.

The saga began seven years ago when CEO Jim Scott – now the CEO at Flair Airlines – became interested in ultra-low-cost carriers, which have low base fares but charge passengers for checked bags, carry-ons and other extras.

“We did a feasibility study on whether there could be a third airline in Canada to service the [ULCC] market,” Scott told Business in Vancouver on November 25. “Canada Jetlines was built out of that.”

He and others, such as vice-president of strategic planning Dix Lawson and chief commercial officer David Solloway, who later became president, drafted a proposal for investors by late 2013 and launched a seed-financing round that ended that December. They began with the goal of $1 million, but they raised $4 million – a great start.

They bumped the offering price and launched a second financing round, aiming to raise $25 million in 2014.

Solloway told BIV that the team secured $18 million of that goal but that the commitments to provide capital were contingent on Jetlines raising $25 million. When that objective failed, all the promised capital fell through.

“The price of oil tumbled – it was terrible,” Solloway said. “Most of the Canadian investors and private bankers, all the funds, etc., were all heavily invested in Canadian resources. They saw half of their wealth disappear. That was the big blow to Jetlines.”

Apparently they applied for the MAN slots after the report was published. I’m still considering it just a rumour until I hear otherwise. There’s even flight numbers WS96/97 floating around too with a 07:10 arrival and 08:45 departure.

As for DUB. I believe YYZ-DUB might happen on the 767 as they still haven’t announced any plans other than the 3x weekly BCN. Maybe they’ll resume YYT-DUB :haha:

Edit: The report for DUB specifically mentions new WS service to YYZ. https://www.acl-uk.org/wp-content/up...ion-Report.pdf

I think this will be at the site of the former McDonnell Douglas facility..

Other than short-term construction jobs, I don't know how many new GTA jobs will be created as they're only going to be shifting production from Downsview to YYZ.

In separate news, I don't think this has been mentioned on here yet, but Air North/4N are launching winter seasonal twice weekly YVR-YZF service: https://www.whitehorsestar.com/News/...wknife-service

Nova Scotia to Welcome Direct Flights from China in 2020

Premier's Office
December 5, 2019 - 10:31 AM
Adding air connections between Nova Scotia and international destinations is an important way of growing tourism, as well as other sectors of the economy. Early in the fall of 2020 Nova Scotia will welcome visitors from China on two direct charter flights.

China Southern Airlines will fly from the city of Guangzhou to Halifax, bringing hundreds of tourists who will tour Nova Scotia, along with New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

“This is a milestone in our relationship with China. Our partnerships with our sister province of Guangdong and Governor MA Xingrui, China Southern Airlines and GZL International Travel Service were critical to this initiative,” said Premier Stephen McNeil. “These flights are the first step in securing regular air access from Guangdong and other regions of China to Nova Scotia and the rest of our region. We look forward to welcoming even more Chinese visitors, students and business leaders as we continue to facilitate exchanges in tourism, education and culture.”

Tourism is a pillar of Nova Scotia’s economy, creating economic benefits for communities across the province. The province has a goal of attracting 50,000 Chinese visitors annually by 2024.

And.. according the LGW report, WS want the slot for new service to YOW

https://www.acl-uk.org/wp-content/up...rd.-Report.pdf

Now this slot coordination thing leaks out everything :D

Although they can still change... WS requested the DUB slot for YYZ last year, but they end up shelving the plan. AC request the slot this year for increasing YVR service, but they use it on YUL instead.

All of this (at least on the WS side) is probably based around the MAX being back in service. I can't imagine they'd send a 767 from YOW to LGW after yanking YEG/YWG. :haha:

I can see them adding YYZ-DUB sharing a 767 with BCN.

Almost certainly a daily MAX service given they've requested 14 frequencies, but could be a 767 if 3x weekly as an interim measure. It's a lot easier to rotate a 763 to YYZ from YOW than either YEG or YWG, especially factoring in IROPS. With all the expansion YHZ's seen, it's about time YOW gets something else...if the MAX saga ever ends!

YOW can easily absorb the transatlantic capacity given YOW's still a good 1000 seats a week short of the peak offering back in 2008.

So the three weekly leftover is pretty much the YWG and YEG flights cut. Seems like they’ll either launch YOW-LGW 3x weekly on the 763 or MAX or they’ll lease those out.

NEW CONNECTION CENTRE:
YUL STRENGTHENS ITS STATUS AS AN AIR TRAFFIC HUB

Montréal, December 5, 2019 – ADM Aéroports de Montréal is completing the construction of its brand new centre dedicated to connections which will start welcoming its first passengers on December 11. Representing an investment of $50 million, fully funded by ADM, this new infrastructure is essential for the development of YUL Montréal-Trudeau International Airport’s air service and reaffirms its status as a hub for international air traffic.

In addition to increasing capacity, this new facility will offer greater fluidity and comfort for passengers. It will help to boost the seat occupancy rate of aircraft, leading to the development of new and interesting air links for the benefit of the entire community. Without connections from all corners of the Americas, Montrealers and Quebecers would not have access to such a wide range of direct flights from Montréal. YUL has been experiencing a sustained rate of passenger growth for several years now. Nearly one million connecting passengers will use this new centre as a gateway to China,
Turkey, the Middle East, Japan or North Africa. “We are extremely pleased to announce the commissioning of our new centre, which is fully dedicated to connecting passengers and represents an important driver for the development of YUL’s air service,” said Philippe Rainville, President and CEO of Aéroports de Montréal. “With this new state-of-the-art facility, YUL is increasingly becoming a strategic location for transiting passengers. Montréal-Trudeau is world-renowned for the efficiency of its winter operations which, combined with its geographical position, already give it a competitive advantage.”

Construction and architectural highlights:

The centre will be operational effective December 11, 2019 (Phase 1) and fully completed by the end of summer 2020 (Phase 2);
• The $50 million construction costs are being assumed entirely by ADM;
The centre will feature 36 Primary Inspection Kiosks (PIKs);
• The project was carried out in accordance with sustainable building standards;
• A large green wall connected to the ventilation system has been installed to maintain a satisfactory level of humidity in air preheated by a solar wall located on the south façade of the building;
• The architectural design was guided by a desire to offer travellers a high-quality and bright space evocative of the culture and charm of Montréal, Québec and Canada;
• The façade is a reinterpretation of the Canadian Shield landscape as seen from the sky. Local and Canadian-made materials, such as Atlantic Black granite flooring and birch wood panels, form part of this representation of the Canadian landscape.

Passenger highlights:

• In 2019, 152 destinations are available leaving from YUL. Among these, 90 are international destinations.
The percentage of passengers connecting at YUL is 20%. In the 2019 summer season, this number increased to 23.2%;
• Phase 1 includes passengers from international and transborder destinations who are heading towards domestic or international destinations;
• Phase 2 will also include passengers from international destinations who are travelling on to transborder destinations;
Nearly one million connecting passengers will use this new centre;
The number of connecting passengers at YUL has increased by an average 9.2% since 2016.
Connecting numbers for summer 2019 are interesting. 1 in 4 passengers were in transit.

This new connection centre will help ease the congestion at the often times overcrowded customs hall.

Interesting. YUL was already a fantastic airport to connect through, domestic to international was completely seamless before they split the gate areas, haven't had the chance to try it since. International to domestic without bags is fantastic, though with bags was a huge drag, have to go to the baggage claim hall and claim bags before transfering. I imagine this will help significantly with that process. I've made some incredibly tight connections at YUL, 20 minutes on an international to domestic due to a delay, and 5 minutes on a Domestic to doemstic thanks to me booking my flights late at night half asleep and not realizing until it was too late.

No. Gate 72 and associated lead in lines for aircraft have been removed. That whole area is full of baggage carts at the moment. So 1 less contact gate for now. Don’t know if they plan on eventually reactivating gate 72, but doesn’t look that way for the short to medium term.

Not enough gates at YUL in the evenings, and this scenario surely won’t help. Again tonight, several landers went straight to the de-ice facility for gate hold, as their gate was still occupied by other aircraft when they landed. And need I remind you we are early December, therefore off peak. And yet airlines keep adding flights!

GRU, SEA, CPH, SAN, AC to TLS, SN to BRU, TP to LIS haven’t even started yet!

Summer 2020 is going to be a mess. Add in all the construction going on, both landside and airside, and the mess will only get bigger!

Wow Lisbon going 5 weekly on top of TAP entering the market.

MRS back to 3 from 4
ALG down to 4 from 5

So they took a frequency from each and added it to LIS.

Also includes YUL-BNA as well as the already mentioned above YYC-BOS and 2nd daily YVR-EWR. I like how it avoids mention of the Max 8 by not mentioning what aircraft type is operating the 2nd daily EWR flights. :haha:

Marketing 101: don’t mention an aircraft type people don’t want to fly on!

Also of note, YYC-BOS is a short season. June 22 to Sept 7. Thats two and a half months. If my memory serves me correctly, YVR-BOS started with a similarly short season.
