Yeah, something is wrong with that story. The flight from Winnipeg is 3:30.

According to Westjet it's 5:34 from YVR to YHZ. You leave at 21:00 and arrive at 6:34.

Have they booked time for a fuel stop if required?

It is also usually faster going east that west due tot he jet stream.

For those who give a rat's ass, I've added up the number of airplane movements for 2015 for various airports as well: (IFR-instrument flight rules, VFR-visual flight rules)

YYZ: 445,188 (443,043 IFR/2,145 VFR) +2.2%
YVR: 317,679 (268,208 IFR/49,471 VFR) +1.9%
YYC: 248,899 (238,173 IFR/10,726 VFR) -0.8%
YUL: 220,251 (214,014 IFR/6,237 VFR) +0.7%
YEG: 158,798 (149,299 IFR/9,499 VFR) -6.0%
YOW: 150,408 (86,847 IFR/63,561 VFR) -2.5%
YYJ: 139,286 (42,974 IFR/ 96,312 VFR) -16.4%
YTZ: 122,242 (64,408 IFR/57,834 VFR) +5.5%
YWG: 118,534 (100,198 IFR/18,336 VFR) -4.2%
YQB: 110,096 (54,082 IFR/56,014 VFR) -2.0%
YHZ: 82,124 (74,142 IFR/7,982 VFR) +0.9%

I could break it down into weight categories, powerplants, types of itinerant movements, etc. Some of the stats are telling.

I remember when AC did the flight - they had a go at it with an A319 a few years before the merger with Canadian. From what I remember of the flight schedule, the flying times are around the same (probably slightly longer). Remember going east you get the tail wind; west you fight the tail wind. So heading to YVR is always longer.

So leaving at 9:00pm the 5:34 would take you to 2:34 and then add 4 hours for time difference = 06:34 am.

A WJ 737 should have no problem making it coast to coast. The range chart I found on boeing's site for the 737 is quite telling.

A Boeing 737-700ER would have enough range to fly YVR-HKG non-stop. Only 14 were ever made though :D

Has anybody taken Harbour Air from YVR? How convenient is it? Also how bad does the weather need to be before they cancel? I'm sure dense fog or high winds would be the main factors as they generally fly below the cloud deck. I'd rather try them out this summer. I hate getting from YVR to Horseshoe Bay. It's a slow and crowded commute via the Canada Line and the Express Bus which is anything but an express bus to the ferries. By convenient I mean easy connecting from flights.

Ugh who would ever want to take a 737 to HKG? I'd be going nuts by around the 5 hour mark since I couldn't get up and walk around the wide cabin!

Agreed.

YVR-YHZ is just 36 miles longer than YVR-LIH.

It's really pretty convenient. There's a shuttle from the domestic/international terminals to the south terminal (just a short walk from where Harbour air flies out of). According to their website, it even looks like there is a direct shuttle, if you call from downstairs at the airport. As far as I know, Harbour Air still flies out of the flying beaver, which is really not a bad spot if you've got a bit of a wait.

Summer is a great time to fly by seaplane, as the weather that causes delays or cancellations (mainly fog and choppy seas) is rare.

Harbour Air can encounter cancellations during the winter. The summer is usually less problematic. YVR south terminal and float plane terminal is a spate area of the airport connected by a shuttle service.

If you are coming from Vancouver Island, you may want to consider booking Air Canada or WestJet departing out of Victoria, Nanaimo or Comox Airport. I generally find it cheaper to do than on a single ticket that two separate tickets.

These new WS services are only 2 month seasonal services. Proof that both markets are marginal at best.

Seems to me WS is having a hard time finding routes where to put these extra 737s that are not needed in Alberta.

These new routes will be a tough go. They're not well timed to connect with GLA, so that option is out. Wish them luck.

TorontoDrew Mar 16, 2016 3:11 PM

Thanks guys for responding about Harbour Air. It lands at the Lighthouse Pub in Sechelt, literally 5 mins from my sisters house. I'm going to be meeting my Uncle from Australia when both our flights land and instead of dealing with the headaches of going through Vancouver I think I'll go ahead and book us two seats with HA. It will be late June so weather shouldn't be a problem.

LeftCoaster Mar 16, 2016 5:26 PM

Have you ever flown in a floatplane before? If not you're in for a treat.

I don't think it's proof they're marginal, but it is proof they are dipping their toes in very cautiously. If they stay 2 months for 2016 or do not return then there's your proof.

You are certainly right WS seems to be streching on where to put their extra planes from AB. Some more transborder from YYZ and YVR could be a good place though. That or try to make nice with YUL?

Denscity Mar 16, 2016 5:52 PM

Vancouver's YVR has just won "Best airport in North America" for a record 7th year in a row!

Coldrsx Mar 16, 2016 6:15 PM

Congrats, she is a great place to catch a flight in recent years with all of the improvements.

esquire Mar 16, 2016 6:47 PM

^ I agree, it's always a pleasure going to YVR.

There is definitely room to improve their network out of YUL. If they will is something else entirely.

-They can start by making YVR and YEG year round.
-YUL-YQM could definitely use an Encore Q400. People here are getting raped with AC to YQM. They have a monopoly and their fares are ridiculously high. I know someone who booked a YQM-YUL-YOW and got off in YUL, because doing it that way saved him 200$ off the total fare (one way).
-Lastly, if they really feel they are up for it, they could start intra-Quebec flying. Mainly YUL-YQB.

This would enable them to get even better feed for their network out of YUL,
