Haiti Leads Region in Projected Hotel Development

Haiti leads the Caribbean and Mexico in hotel development having the most rooms expected to be developed in its near future.

Haiti reported the largest expected growth in the region, with a total of 753 rooms in the active pipeline.

Research done by the staff of Caribbean news magazine, Caribbean Journal found that the region has 131 hotels, 17,923 rooms in the plans and 753 of those rooms are to be built in Haiti; the largest expected growth by a country in the region. Haiti's expected development is more than twice the amount of other countries expecting significant growth. For example, Caribbean Journal found:
...Anguilla, with 28.8 percent growth, or 220 rooms in the pipeline and Dominica with 13.5 percent growth, or 90 rooms in the pipeline. St Kitts and Nevis reported 11.7 percent growth, with 235 rooms in the active pipeline. The Turks and Caicos Islands had expected growth of 10.2 percent, or 327 total rooms.Contributing to the high forecast of development are delays in construction, political clearance and the earthquake of January 12, 2010. For example, the Oasis Hotel and Conference Center which began construction in late 2009 remains underdeveloped. There was a work stoppage following the 2010 earthquake and the Vice President of its Board of Directors and trustee, Guiteau Toussaint was murdered in June 2011, forcing a restructuring of the organization causing further delay. A 250-room hotel to be constructed adjacent of the Toussaint Louverture International Airport is also a project delayed. This hotel was signed and agreed upon in September of 2010 and has an 18-month window to be developed. A memorandum of understanding was signed by the Haitian government and developers of this hotel more than a year later at the Invest in Haiti Forum 2011. A new development is a 173-room Marriott Hotel that was signed into agreement in November 2011 between Digicel, the Clinton Foundation and Marriott Hotels and Resorts. This hotel is expected to be completed by the summer of 2014. Michael Capponi, famed entrepreneur and developer from south Florida is developing an entire block of new business and hotels in Jacmel, Haiti as well. Haitians are hopeful barring any political instability or apocalyptic-level natural disaster that the country has the potential to make huge gains in a short amount of time. Exactly what the people of Haiti need to become competitors in the region's economy.

Marriott International announced Monday it will open its first hotel in Haiti in 2014, a move that brings more jobs and tourism opportunity to Port-au-Prince.

The $45 million, 173-room Port-au-Prince Marriott Hotel will be located in the southern part of the country in the Haute Turgeau area of the city. The hotel will also include a casual restaurant, a lobby bar and lounge and 24-hour room service. The hotel will include about 4,606 square feet of meeting space, a 1,614-square-foot fitness center, and a swimming pool and sundries shop/marketplace.

Haiti has historically been one of the Caribbean's most economically successful destinations, and while the 2010 earthquake shook up the industry and displaced thousands of Haiti residents, the hospitality industry is set on ensuring Haiti regains its place as a top tourist destination. Earlier this year, non-profit group Yéle Haiti created a hospitality pilot-program that educates local Haitians on specific areas of the hotel business, including housekeeping, concierge and front desk responsibilities. As more hotels make their way back to Haiti and the Port-au-Prince area, the possibility for jobs expands and the local economy readies for a rebound.

Marriott has been intimately involved in the rebuilding efforts of the area since the earthquake. The Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., which has approximately 250 Haitian associates, worked on two relief missions to Haiti delivering clothing, food and water and toiletries, and helped rebuild homes, orphanages, and schools. Associates of Marriott's South Florida hotels have raised $200,000 to support recovery efforts and in 2010, the J. Willard and Alice Marriott Foundation contributed $500,000 to the Red Cross for immediate earthquake relief and resettlement efforts. In addition to creating 175 new jobs at this hotel, Marriott will invest in hospitality training to benefit Haiti's tourism sector.

The announcement of the new hotel was made in Haiti during a ceremony with former President Bill Clinton and Marriott International president Arne Sorenson. The Clinton Foundation has worked closely with Marriott and Digicel Group to develop this project.

“This new hotel project will stand as a symbol of Haiti’s recovery, providing much needed jobs to the Haitian people and encouraging foreigners to visit, invest and work in Port-au-Prince," said President Clinton in a press release.

Digicel Group is responsible for designing and building the hotel, which will break ground in 2012 with an expected opening in mid-2014.

The hotel will create some 200 jobs and is scheduled to open in early 2015, officials said. It will feature 175 rooms and will be located in the Turgeau area of Port-au-Prince.

The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund made a nearly $2M equity investment in the Oasis Hotel. The $29 million, Haitian-owned, 130-room hotel and retail space will be managed by Occidental Hotels and Resorts. Though original construction was abruptly halted following the earthquake, the new project sends a powerful message that Haiti is “open for business.”

Hilton Worldwide announces new hotel in Haiti

"Hilton Garden Inn" hotel in Port-au-Prince. This hotel whose the start of work is scheduled for July will include 152 rooms over 11 floors and cost 26 million U.S. dollars. The Hilton Garden Inn is the only hotel conveniently located less than 2 km from the Toussaint Louverture International Airport.

Scheduled for 2016, the opening of this hotel will open the franchise "Hilton Garden Inn" in the Caribbean and will be the first hotel of the company in Haiti. This hotel will have include: a business center, a fitness center, an outdoor pool, a restaurant, flexible meeting spaces and common areas, all will be equipped with internet access 24/24.

Mirebalais Hospital
Long before the January 2010 Earthquake in Port au Prince, aid organization Partners in Health had plans to build a regional hospital. Unfortunately, the devastating quake destroyed Haiti’s main teaching hospital in Port-au-Prince and killed an entire class of nursing students. Now that Haiti is on the road to recovery, Partners in Health has scaled up their plans to build a sustainable, state of the art 320 bed teaching facility powered by solar panels. The Mirebalais Hospital was completely redesigned and donated by Nicholas Clark Architects and construction began in July of 2010 and is expected to be complete in January 2012. The new 45,000 sq ft hospital is located in the Central Plateau region of Haiti in a town called Mirebalais and will serve an estimated 450-500 patients per day. When completed in early 2012, the main medical campus will encompass seven buildings, provide unprecedented medical care for the people of Haiti and serve as an educational facility for the next generation of medical workers. The facility will also include 6 operating rooms, laboratories, microbiology, radiology, and more. Even more amazing is that all of the funds for the hospital have come from direct donations from individuals and firms through Partners In Health and the hospital is expected to cost less than $16 million to build. According to the philosophy of Partners In Health, the hospital includes a number of sustainable practices. Gardens and courtyards are an integral part of the design to encourage the flow of natural ventilation for cooling as well as to prevent the transmission of tuberculosis and other airborne diseases. Large shading roofs will protect the interior from the hot tropical sun and natural daylighting will primarily be used to conserve energy for hospital equipment. High efficiency ceiling fans and efficient lighting will further reduce energy usage.

Mark Williams, international VP of North American development for Best Western, said plans for the hotel have been ongoing for six years. In addition, a 130-room Best Western is being rebuilt in downtown Petionville, a project that is worth around $20 million

The “Hotel des Artistes”, with total investment of $38 million, will feature a traditional Haitian arts-and-crafts motif. It will be managed by a private company, with completion set for early 2013.“This hotel will serve many Haitians returning to their country who will transit overnight on their way to the cities where they came from,” said Mevs, noting that 50 of its rooms will be for extended stays. “We made a decision not to be a chain. It costs $1 million for a franchise, but if you have a good management company, you don’t need a name, especially for an airport hotel, said Mevs. He estimated total investment in the Hotel des Artistes at $38 million.

NH Haiti El Rancho has a privileged location in the heart of Pétion-Ville, a residential suburb in Port-au-Prince. This town holds most of the city’s points of interest. It has an outdoor pool and tennis courts. Within 5 years and some $79 million investment, the hotels El Rancho and Villa Créole will be integrated in a village, a kind of integrated urban development in which will be built n apartment complex (co-owned) in a fully enclosed and secure area. Arcotec S.A., a Haitian construction firm, is pleased to announce that ground has been broken and construction is underway for the ten-story "Genesis” office building in Delmas, Port au Prince, Haiti. Sogebank S.A. will be the primary tenant for the Genesis building, which is scheduled for completion in 2013. Some office spaces are available for lease on the upper floors. The Genesis building is being constructed to international standards, using two earthquake resistance codes (International Building Code and California Building Code), as well as the Florida Building Code for hurricane resistance. Genesis will include numerous amenities and conveniences for tenant firms and their guests, including underground parking, extended-stay hotel, and rooftop café with garden and patio. "We’re very excited about Genesis,” says Gregory Figaro, Arcotec executive chairman. "The building will combine beauty—a light, airy design with a lot of glass—and structural redundancies so the building will be very strong. The Dominican President announced that the University will be completed and delivered the 12 January 2012. A project of $30 million, fully financed by the Dominican Republic and Dominican business sector to be conducted under the coordination of the architect Milka Garrett.
President Fernández said that the campus will be built in the north of Haiti, near Cap-Haitien, will accommodate 10,000 students per day. It will consist of several three-story buildings, 72 classrooms of 30 students, modern library, meeting rooms, computer , accountants and scientists labs, academic facilities, administrative and recreational.

I hated it at first, but upon further review... it looks really beautiful. Haven't found any information about the Presidential Palace though.

Regarding the palace i looked extensively but could not find any updates so as far it seems to be still in deconstruction phase, im assuming its waiting on funding. They have yet to release an official diagram of the new one. And i believe same goes for the Cathedral. If you find any updates feel free to post them.

From 1946 to 2010, the Toirac building was the flagship building on our campus. Named after Florentino Toirac, the founder of the school that would later become STEP, it was beautifully designed and carefully constructed. For 64 years it housed both classrooms and offices for the administration.

But after terror struck in the form of an earthquake on January 12, 2010, the building sustained significant damage and parts of it came tumbling to the ground – killing one student in the process.

After much prayer and many discussions, a design for a permanent replacement was developed. Finally, 6 years after the earthquake struck, in early 2016 ground was broken on a new Academic Building that would hold nine classrooms and 24 offices, bringing both students and the administration back together in the same building again.

In January 2017, construction began on Phase 2 of the project which includes finishing the exterior and completing all interior work (plumbing, electrical, tiling, windows, doors, etc) to make things move-in ready.

As of early August 2017, the building is projected to be ready to move in by the middle of the month. However, funds are still needed to install a computer network, fully furnish the building and to finish constructing a retaining wall that will protect the building from the hill behind it.

Redevelopment of the
Parc du Champ-de-Mars

The Champ-de-Mars is a heritage site at the centre of Port-au-Prince that has been reworked more than once during the last century. Lemay was asked to prepare a redevelopment plan highlighting specific moments in its past. The proposed concept aimed to strengthen the three major functions already present (recreational, festive and commemorative) and illustrate the concept of renewal after the 2010 earthquake.

The Champ-de-Mars rehabilitation design and execution intended to unify the public squares of which it was composed, to make it uniquely recognizable as a public place located in the heart of the national capital.

Also part of the Champ-de‑Mars master plan, Lemay redesigned the Occide Jeanty Kiosk, a cultural and artistic venue re-inaugurated in 2015. Inspired by Haitian traditions and artistic expression, and named for noted Haitian musician Occide Jeanty, the concept included a new, 4,000-seat amphitheatre with esplanade, retail outlets, landscaping and street furniture. Lemay was mandated to oversee the site supervision for work completed by a Haitian construction company.

The cost of construction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , is estimated at million (Financing: PetroCaribe-Treasury), and will create 150 jobs. The building is under construction, difficulties were encountered in the excavations (organic matter and rain), start of backfilling, completion is scheduled for March 2014.

The cost of construction of the Palais des Finances(MEF, AGD, DGI), is estimated at 40 million dollars (Financing: IMF debt relief). Plans are underway, work is scheduled to start in June 2013 and end in December 2014.

The cost of building the Parliament is estimated at -34 million, depending on the option chosen (Funding: Lightening IMF debt), and create 275 jobs. The plans are complete, pending the authorization of the Parliament, the end of the works is scheduled for January 2015.

Other Completed, planned and under construction projects

The Place Boyer is being built at an estimated cost of $1.30 million of dollars (Financing: PetroCaribe-Public Treasury), and will create 60 jobs, the end of work is scheduled for March 2013.

The work of the Triumphare estimated at $6.49 million (Financing: PetroCaribe-Treasury), the construction site will create 100 jobs. Plans are complete, debris removal is underway, work is scheduled for December 2013.

For the city of Jacmel, Seaside works are estimated at $3.89 million, Hotel 5.5 million, Convention Center 2.5 million, Public Square 1 million, and Rue du Commerce 1.5 million (Funding: PetroCaribe-Treasury ), will create 275 jobs. The plans of the hotel are in progress, finalization of the plans of the new public square, installation of the piles of the seaside, wall of protection of the seaside and backfilling, installation of the new roof of the Convention Center, works of the Masonry Convention Center in progress, the completion of work is scheduled for March 2014.

At Morne Cabri, the cost of the housing component (3,000 homes) is estimated at $62.28 million, the Industrial Park at $12.98 million (Financing: PetroCaribe-Treasury), will create 345 jobs. The end of the works is planned for January 2014.

At the level of the sports infrastructures, there are plans for departmental centers at an estimated cost of$1431189.87 by Centers, and Communal Centers at an estimated cost of $227306.63by Centers (Financing: PetroCaribe-Public Treasury). The Departmental Centers will create 50 jobs per Center and the Communes 35 per Center. Construction is underway in Jacmel, Mirebalais, Les Cayes, Gonaives and Ouanamithe, completion is scheduled for March 2014.

At the Jalousie district , phase 1 (painting) is estimated at $2.60 million (Funding: PetroCaribe-Treasury), will create 1,000 jobs, phase 2 (rehabilitation) is estimated at $36.33 million (Financing: PetroCaribe-Treasury), will create 2,500 jobs. The opening of the bids has / has taken place, launch of the works 1st December, end of the works planned for December 2014.

this year 2015. I understood that this completion was one of the priority objectives of the current administration and that it would be completed. The authorities concerned had given assurances. Two successive finance ministers have repeatedly stated that the resources that the Haitian state must provide to complete the road would be available from Petrocaribe funds. I was also convinced that IDB and CIDA, which provided the bulk of the initial funding, would not leave unfinished an infrastructure to which their name will remain attached, which is so important to the Grand Anselais and the country. Yet, by the time these lines are written, the prospects of completing this route appear rather uncertain.

Newly Opened Satama Hotel in Cap Haitien

Located in Cap-Haïtien, Satama Hotel offers a 24-hour front desk, a restaurant and a year-round outdoor pool. Free Wi-Fi is available. All air-conditioned rooms at Satama Hotel include a seating area, a desk and a flat-screen TV. There is a private bathroom with a bath or shower. Some rooms also have a balcony. A breakfast with continental, a la carte and buffet meals is served every morning. Satama Hotel also includes a terrace.
