Alberta Travellers Win as Edmonton Gains New Gateway to Europe: Icelandair to Reykjavik and Beyond



September 3, 2013 (Edmonton, AB) – Starting in March 2014, Icelandair will begin regular scheduled service between Edmonton and Reykjavik, providing Albertans with faster and easier access to more than 20 destinations across Europe.

“This new route links the Capital Region into Icelandair’s superb network of over 20 European destinations, with significantly shorter travel times to places like Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Stockholm and more. Travellers will save as much as six and a half hours of travel time on a return trip,” says Reg Milley, EIA President and CEO.

This new service will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays on an Icelandair Boeing 757 seating 183 passengers in a three-class layout. The 6-hour, 20-minute eastbound flight will depart from EIA at 6:30 p.m. and arrive in Reykjavik at 6:50 a.m. the next morning. The westbound flight will leave Reykjavik at 4:45 p.m. and arrive at EIA at 5:30 p.m. the same day, with flying time of 6 hours, 45 minutes.

Passengers will enjoy the following minimum time savings on return trips to major European cities, as compared with current available schedules offered by existing routings:

• Amsterdam: 1 hour, 25 minutes
• Copenhagen: 4 hours, 55 minutes
• Frankfurt: 2 hours, 30 minutes
• Munich: 3 hours, 50 minutes
• Paris: 2 hours, 25 minutes
• Stockholm: 6 hours, 40 minutes
• Zurich: 3 hours, 20 minutes

These are minimum time savings. Total time saved increases even more with schedule variations.

Icelandair’s interline agreement with WestJet means passengers connecting to Icelandair flights at EIA can book a single combined e-ticket for both airlines, and enjoy the convenience of single check-in for all flights, with baggage sent through to the final destination.

Major Announcement Marks "Roads. Rails. Runways." National Cargo Conference

September 25, 2013 (Edmonton, AB) – Edmonton International Airport (EIA) and the Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association (CIFFA) are hosting over 250 cargo, shipping and logistics leaders from across Canada and beyond at the Roads. Rails. Runways. Cargo Conference.

The conference, which is taking place at the Radisson Edmonton South on September 25 and 26, features local, national and international guest speakers from across the industry, as well as discussion forums and networking opportunities. Highlights also include oil sands flyovers for out-of-province guests and tours of the Leduc-Nisku Business Park, North America’s second largest energy park north of Houston.

Roads. Rails. Runways. marks CIFFA’s first-ever national conference in western Canada.

The need for an industry event of this calibre in Edmonton was further demonstrated by major new announcements today, including:

• A new partnership between EIA and Panattoni Development for light industrial development at the Cargo Village, including warehousing and logistics facilities for freight forwarders, custom-built for the users;

I don't think many would agree that an express bus is adequate for a city of 6 million people. The dedicated rail link to downtown is something that should have happened decades ago. Even Vancouver has that.

I believe you can take a train from Dorval to downtown, but I'm not sure how far the train station is from the airport. If Montreal doesn't have an airport to downtown rail link, they should. Ottawa and Calgary likely don't, but should have plan for one when they get bigger... perhaps when they grow to the 2.5 million range.

Montreal already has an underground train station at the airport which was built several years ago. It is currently unused. Authorities are squabbling over whether to use CN or CP track (linking to Central Station or Lucien-L'Allier Station). The Montreal Airport authority (ADM) wants CN/Central Station option while the AMT commuter train operator prefers the CP/Lucien-L'Allier route. There are so many stakeholders (ADM, AMT, STM, CN, CP, VIA Rail, Transports Québec, City of Dorval and the City of Montreal) and bureaucratic games for a relatively small amount of new track.

The AMT station is on CP's track which goes to Lucien-L'Allier (slightly more direct), and the VIA station is on CN's track which goes to Central Station via Point St. Charles.

The two downtown stations are only about 500 metres apart, aren't they? Seems so easy, yet... not. :koko:

Did they set aside a right-of-way between the airport station and the two rail lines? Would additional tunneling be required, or is it just a matter of laying down track and switches?

Prices in Canada aren't that bad, especially when adjusted for inflation over time. What is a killer is the additional fees and taxes on top of the airfare. None of that goes to the airlines. Is that $79 all in? What are the taxes, fees etc. on a fare like that?

For competition in Canada to increase, and for prices to drop, we need to see domestic carriers like Porter Airlines expand to become a truly National carrier. It's great to see WS and AC having a presence coast-to-coast but AC's stranglehold on YYZ and YUL have done little to lower fares in those cities. The situation may be different in YVR and YYC where WS and AC have a more equal market share and compete directly on more routes. WS's continued expansion in YYZ can make a difference, however. In any case, if we want more domestic competition then we should be supporting Porter Airline's idea of becoming a more National carrier as opposed to the regional one it is today.

I beg to differ. I don’t believe the fights into Australia’s northern territories are as outrageous as ours are. My flight to Iqaluit usually comes in from 2800 -3500 depending on the month. And a normal flight from YEG to McMurray round trip is 700-1000 depending on the time of day.
I would love to see real completion in Canada.

Thanks for the post. What a mess though. The station is already built. The airport is surrounded by rail tracks.

And yet, nobody can agree. And CN, a company that has been headquartered here since it was founded almost a century ago, shame in them for stalling the airport rail link, and for killing the AMT commuter train potential.

And shame on our next mayor (whoever he'll be) who won't even bother trying.

I just paid $177.80 US return (NR, incl) for several coach tickets from SEA to LGB (Los Angeles area)! Non-stop on a JetBlue Airbus A320 with seat-back entertainment and a 34" pitch! Yeah I'm a cheap bastard...:D Alaska Airlines & Virgin America were just a tad more.

The prices for a return fare (CAD, incl) to the LA Area from YYJ for the same timeframe:

United Airlines (via SFO to BUR): 524.36; Alaska Airlines (via SEA to LGB): 539.28; Westjet (via YVR to SNA): 551.18
(it's about $375-400 return from YVR to LAX/SNA non-stop)

I dunno, those McMurray flight prices from YEG seem out of whack! There are two airlines and a decent volume, no? Almost seems like price gouging?? :shrug:

But, you can see my prices quoted above, it's not just the competition between airlines, but also seems to be the lower fees charged by the US airports (no AIFs) and higher passenger volumes between points. SEA/YVR and YYJ are all a similar distance by air to the LA area.

AC fly’s Q400 a couple of times a day. Toronto gets a 320 a couple of times a day. YYC gets CRA 3 or 4 times.

WS fly’s the same on 737.
Vancouver 2X on CRJ
Plus Denver on a 319 I believe.

They could add more capacity I usually need to book a week in advance to get a seat. I have never been able to book the early afternoon flight.

Once the new terminal opens they can easily add more capacity but I don't expect the prices to go down.

hmmm, seems ripe for Porter to get in. Or, bigger planes by the existing airlines. Maybe some reduction in prices then.

WOW, I have never heard of another airline complaining and cutting service just because of an Airport Authority is celebrating the addition of a new route. Ridiculous, IMO.

I have boycotted using Air Canada at any cost for the past 10 years, absolutely the worst airline out there. I recommend everyone to avoid using them.

The Fort McMurray airport expansion is very interesting. I had no idea the airport was growing so fast ... It has just been designated an official point of entry to Canada by the CBSA. This year it got daily non-stop service to Denver and there is speculation Chicago will be added soon. It also has non-stop daily service to Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary

For those that don't know, YMM is currently undergoing a 258 million dollar expansion to increase the terminal size to 5x that of the current. Here are some facts for the expansion and the airport from the Fort McMurray Airport Authority:

- YMM is the fastest growing airport in Canada with a passenger growth rate of 29% year to date

- In 2012, YMM served over 958,000 passengers

- Approximately just over 1.2 million passengers are expected in 2013! (passing YQR??)

- expansion will include new commercial and light industrial developable lands on-airport

- It will accommodate over 1.5 million passengers

- 16 retail and food and beverage outlets and other amenities

- Business lounge

- Over 2,300 parking stalls with power

- 4 airbridges and 8 aircraft parking stands

- Feature a connected 4-star hotel (Opening 2015)

How will this growth affect the other Alberta airports YYC/YEG?? Will they see less connecting traffic or will it just augment growth to those airports?

I love the wood in that Ft. Mac airport expansion. It's a welcome change from the generic sterility of most Canadian airports. Btw, would 29% PAX growth vault it past Billy Bishop in Toronto?

Air Canada is the best airline I've flown on in NA, for sure...Westjet just gets tiring. I sure wish they'd do something about Wifi in this country though.

You must like bitchy employees, dirty aircraft and unnecessary delays caused by employees don't showing up for work. AC hasn't been owned by the government for a long time, but the Mapleflot culture still rules.

I've never had any of those problems. The biggest problem I've had was a two hour delay. It was caused because there was a problem with the aircraft that was repaired, but needed to be inspected by the head mechanic. He was off sick that day (It was a Sunday) and it took time to find someone else with the authority to do it. Air Canada was far friendlier than Delta, as clean as Westjet, and far less annoying.

Agreed. It's a bit ironic that one of Canada's sleekest, most urbane looking air terminals will be in a small city that most people consider to be on the edge of the wild frontier. It's appointed like the lobby of a huge office building... it's a great look and very distinctive.

At first I thought it looked rather small given Fort Mac's explosive growth, but the interior spaces are deceptively cavernous. Very impressive.

I've yet to have a truly positive experience with Air Canada. I've been bumped from flights, delayed, without my check-on bag for several days, etc.

Once, when they had to change my flight because they were delayed leaving Winnipeg and I missed my connection in Toronto, the ticket agent asked me if Halifax was close enough and someone could pick me up there. Umm... it's a 1,500 kilometre drive and a 6-hour ferry ride, honey.

Westjet, on the other hand, has been fantastic. I've still encountered some of the same problems - delays, whatever else - but they're helpful and kind instead of entitled and condescending. And they actually let you know what's going on. Once, I was delayed in Winnipeg - we were just sitting on the plane not going anywhere - and the flight attendant announced that the flight was waiting for passengers connecting from B.C. "There's a whole bunch of people on that flight going on to St. John's and if we don't wait, they won't make it home for Christmas Day."

So, instead of being treated like cattle and getting annoyed as has always been the case with Air Canada delays, people were in good spirits, clapped when the connecting passengers got on, etc.

I'd never fly Air Canada again if I can avoid doing so. It's like a caricature of the most negative stereotypes people have about central Canada. I've never seen such a large organization when everyone, consistently, seems to be absolutely miserable, unhappy with their jobs, and annoyed by having to interact with the public.

I'm surprised by the negative experiences people have had with Air Canada. Mine have generally been very positive, with various instances where staff have gone above and beyond for me. And I'm a regular joe blow flyer too, not super-elite or anything like that.

Sure there have been occasional bumps, but those were generally beyond AC's control, like weather delays resulting in tight connections, which then mean the checked bags didn't make the connection. I don't get the anti-AC mindset that people have... is it just because they're the biggest airline in the country, and therefore attract that kind of reaction?

I've never had a bad experience with either Air Canada or WestJet. In Air Canada's case, I've lost track of the number of times they've upgraded me on international flights, bless their hearts. I see the complaints about Air Canada and always wonder is it me doing something right or others doing something wrong? :shrug:

The new YMM terminal will be a welcome change from the terminal that we fly through now. The old terminal will still be used for all of the camp flights. The only problem I see will be all the assholes that need to get drunk after coming out of the dry camps, and will be on the airside now.

As to the question about GP airport. The terminal was upgraded a couple of years ago. They added maybe 10-20% more space, and upgraded the hvac systems. But overall its pretty much the same size as the Current YMM terminal.

Given the strong growth were seeing out of YMM, are we seeing similar growth at Grande Prairie's Airport?? How fast has their airport been growing?

Frankly, I don't think YQU's growing anywhere near as fast as YMM, simply because Fort Mac's population growth rate is a great deal higher. And of course, the oilsands industry, which is much more developed than in the Peace River area. I don't have any stats available at the moment, but I think YQU is probably serving about half the number of passengers as YMM, or more likely, less than that.

YQU, however, has been extensively renovated back in the late 2000s before the last boom slowed down in 2008. They've installed a new baggage carousel and increased the departure lounge area, but really not a whole lot in terms of actual terminal expansion. Unlike YMM, YQU does not have any jetways. There has been massive growth in the industrial lands just to the east of the airport. One of YQU's runways was planned to be extended to 8500 feet from 6500 feet, but I don't know if that's still in the plans or not.
