Blossom Hotel Houston: New 9-Story hotel in the Med Center, catty-corner from the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center.
https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5659/...00a458ce_b.jpg Elgin at Scott: More student housing coming to UH, the project also contains a retail component. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/563/2...058f9f78_b.jpg Mt. Vernon Montrose Lofts https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5807/...7499dfc4_b.jpg |
Where's the museum supposed to be? The student housing and hotel designs wouldn't be as offensive design wise if they simply tamed things down and removed those "crowns".
|
If the Blossom Hotel really ends up looking like that, it will be major ugly.

Museo Plaza
Yesterday the Chron published a new article on Aurora and this interesting tidbit of info was given on another project in the design phase by Philip Johnson/Alan Ritchie: http://www.houstonchronicle.com/loca...er-6482739.php Quote:
A forumer on HAIF with good inside info also confirms this as an actual project. http://www.pjararchitects.com/#!museo-plaza/cem1 https://farm1.staticflickr.com/712/2...0d54e395_b.jpg https://farm1.staticflickr.com/574/2...0dcaf926_b.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5660/...f1c9ff40_b.jpg https://farm1.staticflickr.com/725/2...71f51420_b.jpg https://farm1.staticflickr.com/571/2...897917ac_b.jpg |
Despite being seemingly isolated, the design appears to be fairly interesting.
|
I really like the design of that one.

Seems like every other day a 40+ floor tower goes into the pipeline. |
Update: The tower is 54-floors. As for the smaller buildings, one is a 200-room hotel and the other is a retail lifestyle center.

http://www.houstonarchitecture.com/h...ay-8-beechnut/ Plans originally called for 35,000 sq ft of retail and two towers, one office/condo and the other a hotel. The tower component has expanded with the addition of two condo towers, removing the condo units from the office building. http://www.credusa.com/edit/UploadFi...7231220391.jpg |

Fast forward to 2017: 45% surface parking drops to 20% and 30,000+ sq. feet of retail is added from this project and the two new residential towers. Of course this is just one section of Preston Street. Most downtown streets have 30 to 40 blocks facing them. Lamar, McKinney and Louisiana are probably the streets with the least surface parking adjacent to them. Some other declines in surface parking as a percentage of streetscape are Main, Rusk and Walker which drop from a combined total of 25% to 15%. |

What's also encouraging is there seems to be no slowdown in the number of new developments being proposed despite the oil industry downturn. |

Somewhat of a feel good article on Houston. Not sure if I agree with the haze or oppressive heat statements - they are inaccurate at best

Some years the transition from warm to hot weather is gradual, but June is dreadful in my opinion because nobody is used to it yet. July and August are hotter, but the wardrobe and attitude have adjusted. You travel to other cities and resent their pitiful lack of adequate cooling in cabs, hotel rooms. Back home you step off the plane and realize on the ramp that it is really, really hot. :slob: When September arrives there are pleasant days in the mix-- just like this month -- whereas July and August can be monotonously hot. In October I get a little sad because I develop a case of weather induced Stockholm syndrome. I start to miss the summer. |
