I passed downtown today twice and i noticed a couple of tower cranes that i was unfamiliar to which development they belonged to can anyone tell me which developments they are?

Can you give us a sense of where downtown you saw them?

I've reconsidered. Rather than tearing down Horton Plaza to build an arena, maybe the east Village is the better local. Horton can be repurposed as a residential/business center. Also, maybe the Gulls can be upgraded by the league to a major league level with some draft picks. But it will need a new arena. A new arena would also attract a major league basketball team. Probably will need to be an expansion team--doubt the Clippers would return. A downtown arena also could be used as an adjunct to the convention center for large meetings, political conventions, concerts etc. The Midway arena can be replaced with badly needed housing. Perfect location for that. Win win.

An arena would be a black hole of inactivity during most days and many evenings. That sort of thing belongs on the downtown fringes, not in the center like Horton Plaza.

Looking at the East Village, it looks like four typical blocks would be required for an NBA arena. The grid is so awesome...do you want to damage that? (I don't live in SD.
Assuming you mean somewhere in that grid.)

The ballpark area has a great site where the football stadium was proposed.

In SD-speak "East Village" is pretty much everything east of the Gaslamp District, which includes the Ballpark. So we're talking about the same place you're thinking of: the Tailgate Padres parking lot and/or the MTS bus yards directly to the east, both of which already break the street grid. But that's a lot of potential land that could be used for housing, office space, retail, and the East Village planning committee has already said they're virulently against a stadium on the site (and the City Council doesn't look like it's interested in fighting them on it).

Ballpark Village, I'm most excited about this project finishing up. Having some bars and night life on the south side of the stadium when games finish will be nice. Hopefully they have some rooftop bars with views of the stadium as well.

They're still excavating/shoring for the underground parking lot. Slowly but surely.

I got the chance earlier this week to speak with some people working on the Terminal 1 replacement at Lindbergh Field and figured you all might be interested in a little bit of behind the scenes info. First off, the design of the terminal is going to look a bit different than the concepts circulated a few years back. For reference, that would be this:

Apparently this design, which was done up by the airport internally, was pegged by the contractors and engineers that were actually hired to build it as being far more expensive than the airport's estimation. This was a major problem as the airport was already struggling to raise enough funds for its own lower cost estimate, and eventually the project had to be cut down and sectioned off. I had a chance to see some of the preliminary engineering documents, which I cannot post here, but upon doing a bit of google searching I managed to find a publicly available image reasonably close to what I saw:

Important things to note are: the retention of Terminal 2 west and the deletion of both the central widebody gates and centralized customs inspection area (FIS). None of this is recent news actually, the realization that the airport's original plan was infeasible came over 2 years ago. This lead to design and construction of the recently opened FIS to keep up with demand, which at 2 years from inception to opening was built extremely quickly for an airport project.

More currently, the EIR for the relocation of the airline cargo and maintenance facilities should be approved in the fairly near future. They're currently located just to the east of the terminals, in the way of the expansion, and need to be moved. The new cargo facilities will be replace the long term parking lot north of harbor dr, the maintenance area will replace the economy parking south of PCH (these cargo areas are apparently separate from the FedEx station right next to the tower, which is going to stay). The airport noted the loss of parking, which is why they just built the new parking structure south of Terminal 2, and they included a parking structure just south of the new Terminal 1 in the design. The current estimates are something like 2 years for the relocations, the construction of the actual terminal will begin around 2020-2021 and open about 5 years later. As always though, take construction schedules with a strong grain of salt. The airport is still contemplating replacing Terminal 2 west sometime after that as well, possibly by extending the new Terminal 1 to the NW similar to the original design.

But honestly, 3rd & A is a little uninspired looking... On the bright side, it should really help transform up a current dead zone.

Great updates. Anyone else notice that 10th & E is directly next to Pinnacles proposed tower? I wonder if that's going to affect whether it gets built or not. We have already seen a proposed project die because another proposal blocked views.
