I love the stadium. One of my favorite in the MLSE. I do love BMO though about as much for different reasons.

CFL working hard to improve viewership
Terry Jones edmontonjournal.com September 23, 2017

Three years ago in the CFL, attendance and TV numbers started to slide.

Into the game came Christina Litz to tackle the problem.

You could make a case that she’s becoming the league’s most valuable player.

The new Senior VP of Content & Marketing, Litz has brought several new initiatives into play including the successful CFL Week in Regina last March. The event will return in Winnipeg this spring and almost certainly be held in Edmonton the following year.

This season the league has added a ‘TSN-CFL Fantasy Football’ concept. A ‘PickEm’ prediction project launched last year and is up 44 per cent.

Thursday, the CFL launched ‘Football Frenzy’, a fast-paced shoot-out style arcade game available for download on mobile and tabloid devises aimed at a young (8-to-14) demographic.

And Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium, the latest initiative was launched.

It’s the first stop of a NFL-CFL flag football tournament featuring eight co-ed teams of 11-12 year-olds with the winner going to the Grey Cup in Ottawa and the winner of that proceeding to the NFL Pro Bowl in Orlando, Fla.

Early evidence is that the league’s effort to draw new fans and especially younger fans is working.

The league has never shared this before but their latest numbers in terms of reaching new and younger fans are suddenly solid, especially in the key 18-34 age group.

Ages 18-34 35-54 55+
CFL.ca 32% 39% 28%
Twitter 63% 18% 4%
Facebook 52% 31% 13%
Pick’Em 27% 46% 24%
Fantasy 35% 45% 19%

Attendance is up one per cent despite an empty stadium in Toronto and a 0-8 start to the season in Hamilton. TSN is down slightly.

“We’ve been going full force and so far we’re real happy with the initiatives. We are showing positive momentum on what we hoped but we have to keep our foot on the gas. We can’t rest on any of this,” Litz said.

Litz basically invented CFL Week.

Expectations were minimal but it became an overnight success story, essentially becoming a sort of second Grey Cup week for fans. It was especially popular with the 50 star CFL players flown in to Regina to basically be Brier Patch-accessible with the fans and interact with unprecedented accessibility with the media in this recent era of Football Ops taking over control of several teams in the league including, until this year, the Eskimos.

The event connected the CFL combine, TSN video shoot, Canadian Football Hall of Fame induction announcement with a Fan Fest involving other interaction components for young fans and a beer hall in the centre of it all.

“What we’re excited about is that the success of last year’s Mark’s CFL Week left us in a position to grow the event this year. We’ll certainly keep a lot of the base elements intact — the media access, the fan access to the players and all of those components that went over so well,” said Litz. “We’re going to tighten up the schedule to allow us to do the TSN shoot at the same time as the ‘Fan Fest’.”

‘Fantasy Football’ has been a hit. Sixty per cent of those playing TSN-CFL Fantasy are under the age of 44.

“The most exciting thing is we went from zero players to over 20,000 actively playing and from zero to millions and millions of impressions of media and fans talking about CFL Fantasy. It’s just something that as a modern sports league I think you now have to have,” said Litz.

There’s also the ‘Pick ‘Em’ game, a simple contest where participants select which team will win each game for a chance to claim weekly prizes.

“Now we have over 40,000 playing that one. That’s a great way for the casual fan who doesn’t know all the players to get involved playing,” said Litz.

Thursday the league launched ‘CFL Football Frenzy’

“It’s a mobile video game that you could play on your iPad or iPhone that is available free on the App Store with Android coming shortly. This is new ground for the CFL as we follow through on our strategy to reach younger audiences,” said Litz. “The game was built with age 8 to 14 in mind. Except we’re now phrasing it ‘the 8 to 14 at heart’ because there are so many people playing who are older than that. We did this with the CFLPA and so the players are involved in a cartoony fun sort of way and we discover from social media that some of our players were playing including Bo Levi Mitchell and others we discovered.

“We were delighted to wake up Friday morning and find out that we were No. 1 for kids in the apps store and No. 3 for sports games.”

In today’s world there has to be more involved in football than football to capture young fans. Christina Litz gets it.

MLB or any other US-based sports league having video games as promo items isn't news.

In the case of the CFL it is news - they've always been late to the dance on this front.

elly63 Sep 25, 2017 3:44 PM

As many CFL haterz as there are, which amazes me how people can crap on something in their own country, for no legitimate reason, that is one of the reasons why a CFL game has been delayed. It has to be more than good otherwise the haterz will jump all over it.

This foray is a good way to go about it, not only marketing to kids but putting a toe in the video game market waters before they release something on the Madden level.

I guess this is some proof from the developers on why a "major" game has not been released.

It is concerning the delay in an Android release for CFLFF. "Right now though the initial load time is ridiculous and we'd be murdered if we tried to release it in this state. I think we're going to have to quickly re-jig how assets get loaded at startup."

Lots of cities where this sort of thing could and should be promoted. Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary (already has the Crowchild Classic), Winnipeg, Toronto, Kitchener-Waterloo, Toronto, Montreal, Sherbrooke, Halifax....anywhere I've forgotten?

Unfortunately the CIAU/CIS/Usport administration is best at doing nothing; it will be up to Sport Admins in the local areas to lead.

I've been pretty busy lately so I haven't had much time to update this thread with numbers. The Whitecaps had three days to sell playoff tickets and managed 21K, and then lined up a matchup against Seattle last night where they drew 27.8K. Both pretty good numbers. TFC are hosting on the 5th and are expecting a sellout of around 30K.

The Canada/US friendly at BC Place this November has surpassed the 22.5K mark, as well.

It's a real shame that tickets are $150 per person for this event. I only paid $150 each for 4 grey cup game tickets! I think 1 drink and some appies are included with your $150 ticket to this "tailgate party"!

Division Semi-Finals net out as most watched in three years

"TORONTO – Yesterday’s thrilling CFL PLAYOFFS doubleheader scored massive audiences on TSN, as overnight data from Numeris confirms that the CFL’s Eastern and Western Semi-Finals broadcasts were the most-watched in three years, averaging 1 million viewers overall. This year’s semi-finals saw an increase of +7% with total viewers over 2016, and made TSN the most-watched network in Canada on Sunday.

Overall, 4.3 million Canadians watched some or all of the Eastern and Western Semi-Final games."

Argos keeping prices reasonable as they try to draw fans to the CFL’s East final
Double Blue learned from Grey Cup experience "that there's still work to be done in this market."
Drew Edwards Hamilton Spectator Nov. 6, 2017

The Toronto Argonauts have been presented with an incredible opportunity by earning the right to host the East final at BMO Field. They can also advance to the Grey Cup.

The Argos’ struggles for relevancy in the packed Toronto entertainment market are well documented but team president Michael Copeland is hoping a home playoff date — not to mention two weeks to sell it — could be an important step in the club’s long march back to prominence.

“I think this has the opportunity to boost what we’re trying to do here more than anything else we’ve done before,” Copeland said.

Toronto will host its first post-season game since moving from the cavernous and perpetually empty Rogers Centre two seasons ago. The Argos will have just under two weeks to fill 26,000 seats for the Nov. 19 final. The team has adopted an aggressive marketing strategy that adds a large dose of traditional media to its already extensive digital footprint, including billboards, print, radio and television ads.

They are also leveraging the extensive media properties under the control of part-owner Bell Media. Running back James Wilder Jr. was on the TV show The Social on Monday morning.

“We’re not assuming that everybody has had the greatest relationship with the Argos, we’re trying to cast a way net to bring those people in,” Copeland said.

As they have been all season, the Argos have also been aggressive in their pricing, with tickets for the East final ranging from $19 to around $150. With a season-ticket base of just 4,000 or so, that means they have a lot of ground to make up, one ticket at a time.

“It’s absolutely a focus of ours that this is an affordable game and we understand who our fan base are,” Copeland said. “This is about getting people in and making sure they have a great experience and being thoughtful about pricing helps.”

They appear to have to learned a lesson from last year. The team was heavily criticized when it announced sky-high ticket prices for the Grey Cup, which was also held at BMO Field. Sales were sluggish and the team was forced to slash prices and give away scores of tickets to sponsors and partners in order to fill the stadium.

“If we’re going take anything away from Grey Cup, it’s that there’s still work to be done in this market,” Copeland said.

That’s a change as well. The move to BMO Field was touted as a magic elixir for a languishing franchise and Copeland now acknowledges the return to relevancy will be a long, slow process.

“At the very beginning it might have been frustrating not to have the results right off the bat but what it did was shed a light on the challenges and opportunities we have in the market,” Copeland said. “It’s really important for us to continue to show people what the experience is like and being in the playoffs and being in a game of this stature certainly helps.”

Argos threatening to do the unthinkable: sell out BMO
Drew Edwards 3downnation November 17, 2017

According to Toronto Argonauts play-by-play man Mike Hogan, ticket sales for Sunday’s East Final continue to be strong. Like, really strong.

https://i.imgur.com/u8u6Lfx.png

Hoagie knows some people in Argo-land so I think that “unofficially” is as official as it gets without it being, uh, actually official.

The Argonauts said earlier this week that they’d surpassed the 20,000 mark and the team has engaged in an all-out marketing and media blitz to sell the game. Capacity at BMO Field is about 26,000 with an extra 1,000 or so seats added for the MLS playoffs (take it easy soccer peeps, the Argos still get better TV ratings than you.)

If there are truly less than 3,000 tickets left than a sellout is an actual possibility but just as importantly, the stands will look mostly full on TV – no more blurry and depressing Twitter photos from cynical media types engaging in a certain kind of Double Blue schadenfreude over empty seats.

Rider fans are taking plenty of credit for the rush on tickets this week and they’ll certainly be a sizeable, loud, and likely drunk green contingent (not that there’s anything wrong with any of that.) But maybe, just maybe, we can take this as a sign of hope that the Argonauts might just make a go of it after all.

Denscity Nov 19, 2017 8:07 PM

Strange, the end zones and behind the camera (on reverse angles) look full. The side opposite the camera before the first half ended looked pretty full aside from one section at the end. After the half there seems to be more empty seats in view, odd considering the game is going down to the wire.

A pair of entertaining playoff games produced the best TV ratings of the season for the CFL on Sunday.

The East Final between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Toronto Argonauts is now the highest rated broadcast of 2017, posting an average viewership of 1.41 million on TSN. The Argos won a thriller 25-21 as Ricky Ray led a game-winning drive in the final minute after the Riders stormed back from a double-digit second-half deficit.

The West Final was just as good with the Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Eskimos going down to the wire in a 32-28 Stampeders win. That game produced an average viewership of 1.34 million on TSN. It’s now the second-most watched game of the year.

Even TSN’s pre-game show did well, posting 660,000 and making it the third-most-watched sports program of the day after the two games. The CFL handily beat both the NFL and the NHL on Sunday.
