Condo plan for major downtown Toronto site may include a park
A developer that has just beat out a number of rivals to buy a much-coveted piece of land on Wellesley Street West near Yonge Street is now in talks with the city about scaling down its condominium plans to make room for a park.

As a result, Toronto Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam is now confident her long-held desire to see this particular parcel of land become home to some sort of green space, something local residents have also pushed hard for, will be realized.

Now Lanterra is planning to submit an application to the city this week to obtain about 950,000 square feet, enough space for two condo towers. But Mr. Fenton and Ms. Wong-Tam are in talks about doing something different on the site.

“We are in fluid discussions with the city councillor, and the game plan is to see if we can work something out over the next few months that provides more of a park concept with one tower, and that’s something that we would look to do,” Mr. Fenton said.

Wow, great development. Glad to see this empty lot being transformed into something better. The height seems pretty reasonable for this area too.

I definitely like the one tower with the park idea better. Maybe in that sense, we will get an appealing tower rather than 2 substandard ones that end up making the entire area worse.

I thought that lot was being saved for a park/public space? There should be no building allowed whatsever.

Unfortunatly we live in a free market economy, and our Government is broke, almost nothing you can do to stop this development from happening.

NIMBY's have been stopping their feet for years trying to stop this one to now avail. The government (Provincial) Said it would consider a City or Neighbourhood proposal to purchase the property from them, but in the age of transparent and open bidding processes, the best deal won out.

65 Million goes to paying off the provincial creditors.

I like the proposal as illustrated in the rendering from The Star. At least there's some green space, and the tower doesn't look bad.

Yeah, if we get that tower as shown, it may not be such a bad deal. The city gets some money and for the most part the park is also given. The podium looks interesting with that pyramid like stacking.

This project will launch in early 2014 under the moniker, "Wellesley on the Park".

It will no longer be a twin-tower, but a single 54 storey tower (potentially taller).

That is a nice proposal. I like the design, quite similar to Massey Tower. And the park is a good addition too. Will add some good improvement to the neighbourhood in my opinion.

Yes, and I hope the height is raised to 70 storeys or so.

Don't know if Im feeling the whole 'tower in the park' thing in this part of town. I hope the podium has some nice retail/restaurants.

The tower looks a bit meh. Too many balconies. Nonetheless 70 stories would be very cool.

Edit: Correction: a reliable source says it will be 194 m.

Developments like this are what help to make great cities. A cool building with a nice and pretty decent sized park at the base! So awesome. Sprinkled in with everything else going on in Toronto right now, it is unreal to see the direction your city is headed! Congrats guys!

I don't think it ever really had the chance to be unless we're talking about knocking down the buildings fronting Yonge, which wasn't going to happen.
