What's to stop somebody riding the elevator accessing your apartment? Or at least looking into it as you get off? There does seem to be a major privacy concern to me.

Private elevators for full-floor residences have been the norm in Manhattan since the 1920's, so it isn't some new concept.

You typically enter from the elevator directly into the residence reception hall. Nowadays they use laser scanners for security, and guests are allowed in by doorman override. No neighbor will ever see your residence unless you allow them.

Stairwell phones were my thought as well. I've lived in one building with a private elevator entrance (not mine), but it was only five stories so I never really thought about it before.

You can see some "hidden" floor plans as well on the website. Most are duplicates, but these are some unique ones:

The unit with a double height living area:

I believe the living space in this unit (Floor 61) is shown in this rendering:

It still would be kind of weird to have a an elevator open directly into your unit.
I'm sure it's somewhat normal but I still wouldn't feel completely secure.
I'd like to have it separated into a small foyer room that I could lock off and bypass.

The parents of a friend of mine from college have a penthouse in SF that has a direct elevator into the unit. It's actually pretty cool, and very secure. And there's is in a much older building, so imagine this is another level of secure. I'd wager you'd have biometrics involved at this point in the game, especially at this price point.

I just quickly took a look at the Fr-speaking forum; they say this is the most slender, thinnest building ever built.
It's got its pack of fans over here for this reason. Concrete is allowing such structural feats.
It's a splendid tower, there's no question about the design itself.

However, they also claim the building would host only some 60 units. :sly:
That's insane. The worst is the tower might sit mostly empty most of the time, eventually.
Foreign billionaires purchasing that kind of real estate take it as speculative goods, and hardly ever set foot in there.
Same phenomenon as that of large urban mansions here in Paris, that's quite controversial.

chris08876 Oct 9, 2018 4:27 PM

Its definitely a reality purchasing units for investment properties and sitting empty. A lot of these uber-high cost units are like that. Buy X unit, wait Y years, sell it. Unless some disaster happens, or the Independence Day aliens glass the city, prices will continue to rise.

I mean, I am totally ok with this acting simply as a sculpture and without any utility to the city. It is just that gorgeous. I don't think that's necessarily a good thing but god this thing cannot be beat. Now, as a trend that is more worrisome but I'll make an exception for this one.

NYguy Oct 10, 2018 3:38 AM

^ I wouldn't worry about that. It's not something that's as much as people would make it out to be. This building isn't even built yet, and people are worrying that there will be no one in it.

Skyguy_7 Oct 10, 2018 2:58 PM

^My guess is once the investors see the unbelievable views from their investment units, they will not want to leave.

Yeah, it won't be a flat, glass surface.

There are Open Windbreak Floors (71 and 31). They might be able to go to these floors and ride the elevator up.

Incredible pictures!

A few observations. I remember when One57 was going up and it stood out for its height.
Now it is almost an afterthought (height-wise). Central Park Tower may be taller but it is so clear that 111 W 57th is architecturally/design superior. Lastly, it'll be wild to see how far out the tower crane is outriggered once this reaches topping out phases.

Skyguy_7 Oct 17, 2018 12:22 PM

^^ Great photo set. I still can't believe horseface Gail and her cronies all came to the consensus that "shadows in the park" would be their best strategy to "resist" the construction of these towers. :haha:

Yes, I remember the crane dangling after hurricane Sandy. It was so high, and gave more gripes to the NIMBY crowd.

It worked for them in the 80's, but when developers build within existing zoning, all they can do is scream.

There'll be like a collective gasp across the planet once this one glows all sorts of different shades! Based off the blueprint. We are at floor 79. 1,055 feet. Only 5 residential floors remain to be constructed along with 4 mechanical floors and a windbreak above that. The rest is all cap. This will reach floor 89 by the end of the year with core completion.

I don’t think this will be the case. If you’re in the park in the evening you notice that there are are lots of lights on at 432 Park Avenue and One57. People do actually live in these buildings and there are quite a few apartments so a constant rotation of foreign buyers coming in and out of town. It is New York after all, the most important city to the world’s super rich which has the world’s highest volume of private flights coming in and out of town. They’re always here.

I have never dreamed about a skyscraper before but last night I dreamed that they decided not to install 111's tuned mass damper in order to save money. Then the city got hit by a hurricane and the tower collapsed leading to a complete ban on new skyscraper construction in New York of towers over 20 floors. I woke up panicked. :koko:
