Winnipeg Activism (urbanism, and more)
Winnipeg Activism (urbanism, and more)
This is a thread where we can post about local organizations that are trying to make Winnipeg a better city. Folks on this forum have a lot of great ideas about how Winnipeg can be improved, and we all care enough about it to trawl this forum, so I'd like to encourage people here to channel some of that energy in ways that might plausibly result in positive change. Especially the following are on topic and welcome: * notices of upcoming events (meetings, talks, strikes, information sessions, fundraisers, ...) * summaries of events after the fact * news relating to existing organizations, or of new ones trying to get off the ground * discussion of what kinds of activism we would like to see in Winnipeg, what might work/won't work List of organizations (work in progress, will be continuously updated): Functional Transit Winnipeg https://functionaltransit.com/wp-con...ed-FTWlogo.png Homepage: https://functionaltransit.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/FTWinnipeg Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FunctionalTransit Description: Quote:

Thanks for putting this together. I may not agree with everything these groups say, or the general tenor of how they say it, but they are all in their way doing the Lord's work.

Last night YIMBY Winnipeg hosted their first public event "Living the Suite Life", which was an evening seminar all about building second suites. That is, building a secondary separate suite in an existing house, either within the same building (basement or upper level suite), or detached (above or adjacent to a garage).
Topics included how to navigate the city's red tape, what you're allowed to do with/without a variance, advice for how to construct them, discussion of what the city could do better to allow these infill developments. A Q&A session followed. Quite a few folks showed up, including Councillor Matt Allard, some folks from Functional Transit Winnipeg and Winnipeg Trails. It's nice to see the cross-pollination between similar advocacy groups in the city. We even made it onto CTV News! https://twitter.com/YesInWpg/status/1230462528024649730 |
