1470 Spring St. - SCAD Housing

Has anyone else noticed that so far the new SCAD tower looks a bit like an old soviet-era apartment block? And I don't see how their usually, just paint it all black is going to help. I didn't realize what a prominent building this would be from the interstate.

They may need to rethink the color scheme to something a little more fun, it is after all an art/design school.

I think we may be surprised at this one when it's done. I like the high qulaity renderings I've seen.

It has shot up really fast because of the precast construction technique so hopefully they will take their time with the finishes and do it right. Someone also mentioned that that is only half of the building so it will be even wider when the second half comes up.

It definitely looks really stark and out of place at the moment. I'm just hoping it turns out ok.

I couldn't tell if this was black but I guess so.

That rendering actually shows more of a texture than I've seen on any others. Hopefully that vertical grid pattern is panels or maybe painted. But even if it's subtle would be better than just flat black.

Much to my surprise, I think this turned out okay.

Actually the building looks nice and stands out from everything else. Looks good at night with the lighting as well. Several out of town friends mentioned this building driving the connector and none of the others over the past couple weeks. Everyone of them thought it was neat and stood out from all the other towers in a good way.

Yeah looks better than I thought it would.

Part of this new phase of SCAD includes a theater. SCAD recently sold and moved out of SCADshow, the old 14th street playhouse. I heard from someone there that it is being torn down. Anyone heard anything else? I know this thread is for another building but seeing as they are both (former) SCAD properties, someone here might have some intel.

^I haven't heard anything, but I was walking by the other day, and that is an excellent corner for a development, especially if Dewberry every finishes the campanile reno across the street. It already has a parking deck, so they could just build an apartment or office tower on the north end of the site. They could even partially build above the existing deck, like with the new downtown development.

That deck is a prefab deck, so i doubt it can support development on top. I predict someone may redevelop the entire deck, tear it down, and build a larger tower there, with parking for campanile, similar to the deal the hotel next to the fox theater struck with the parking operator that owned the lot. Since dewberry owns that deck, it is hard to say when that may happen

The original plan for the campanile work had a new tower where that deck is so maybe…. But Dewnothing will squander this too

In Dewberry's defense, he may be financially tapped out.
