Construction progress. Haven't a clue what's what down there:

According to three different sources the height was increased from 570m to 600m (1968ft). The top seems to have been re-designed as well.

Good !
I didn't like the old version.
This one will probably be known as "the diamond".

Shanghai_Fan Nov 17, 2008 12:16 AM

China's second 600m tower. Another 1-2 coming.

Wow! I really like this design. Looks way better than the old one. Reminds me of a modern and way taller Tour de la Bourse with a diamond on top.

I like the first one more but it still gonna be a real beauty. :worship:

China has some real magic behind its towers.

Indescribable Nov 18, 2008 3:36 AM

The original rendering looks a bit like a stretched out version of 2 IFC in Hong Kong.

Biff Nov 19, 2008 9:24 PM

I like buildings so tall you have to scroll up or down to see the entire tower.

WonderlandPark Nov 19, 2008 9:28 PM

aww, another 21m and they could take the world's tallest by roof height. Someone has to go after the BD, it will most likely be China. Go for it.

The diamond thing looks rediculous.

photoLith Nov 20, 2008 12:23 AM

eeew, that diamond is retarded looking, hopefully they change it. The original design was also quite shoddy.

NYC4Life Nov 21, 2008 1:19 AM

That's a lot of karats on that diamond.

Duffstuff129 Nov 23, 2008 3:01 PM

I like the body of the tower, but the top is very odd to me. It's beautiful and slim all the way up and then... giant concrete fins and a fake diamond? What?

At least they chose a good city to put it in, the visibility in Tianjin isn't marred by the fog and smog.

Also, with China's economy down the crapper, will the work on this one keep going?

Fabb Nov 23, 2008 5:51 PM

Does the diamond symbol have a specific meaning in Tianjin, or is it there for no reason ?

Too bad about the first design being axed; it was nice and graceful even if it did have a few awkward details. This second version is...interesting. I don't know why the top has been given such a disjointed and visually (and physically) massive crown--really kills the sense of grace and height that the basic form has. Should still look nice from street-level looking up, though.

TANGELD_SLC Nov 25, 2008 6:09 AM

OK, uhhhh WTF is up with that Diamond? It's hideously tacky and ruined the tower, IMO. I liked the other design waaaay better. Now they are becoming Dubai II, and NOT in a good way.

NYC4Life Nov 27, 2008 6:46 PM

^^^ I agree, China can do much better than this.

StarScraperCity Nov 27, 2008 7:55 PM

The tower itself is pretty attractive, but that hideous excuse of a crown ruins it.
