It's a trophy to the UAE and their oil wealth. They are very successful in marketing themselves to the world. Having the world's tallest structure is a part of this.

I still retain the opinion that this thing is ugly as hell.

If you look at the renderings they plan to build an entire district around this tower. So yes, it's currently in the middle of nowhere, it soon won't be.

Spocket Sep 25, 2018 9:31 AM

I'm not going to say that it's growing on me because it's not but it is what it is. I don't consider it the tallest building in the world so much as the tallest something else. Never liked towers that were simply towers to look at...they just don't seem to fit into a good looking skyline. Just my opinion.

On the other hand, it may turn out to be a beauty. After all, the Eiffel tower was considered a blemish on the Paris skyline for years after it was built. This, while still ugly as sin IMO, is starting from a better position.

What I really want to know, however, is how this thing is supposed to generate revenue for its owners. How much could they possibly get from so few potential tenants (like, one if there's a hotel) and an observation deck? I guess it's just meant to act as some sort of "overall" part of the Dubai package and help attract business.

It wouldn't surprise me if this ends up as an unfinished Caltrava pit in the ground like his failed Chicago Spire.

mrnyc Oct 19, 2018 4:55 PM

i can see maybe a hotel, restaurant, skybar and observation area, like a seattle space needle, but i can't picture office workers or residents in this. and even tho it isnt, cable stayed just seems sketchy for ongoing habitation. not that it doesn't look good, i think it does look pretty cool, but what a waste of time and $$$.

It's certainly a building, but just like the CN Tower in Toronto, it's not a skyscraper (defined as a tall high-rise) and so I don't understand why this thread is even on the Supertall Construction forum. Supertall refers to a skyscraper that's above 300 m, so the Supertall Construction forum shouldn't include non-skyscrapers such as towers. The Diagrams page does get it right, classifying the Dubai Creek Tower as a tower instead of high-rise.

ADMINS: Please consider moving this thread to a different forum.

This seems way over-complicated for the end result.

I second this. There is a lot that can go wrong with those systems they are using for all of those phases.

Tower in Dubai

While it's very pointy. I don't see the point from either a financial or social equity persepective.

This is how Dubai attracts tourists.

Hallo.... why so few pics? 🤷♂
No updates? 🙄

pianowizard Jan 3, 2019 2:55 PM

Too few forum members live in Dubai or travel to Dubai. More importantly, this is a tower, whereas most people on this forum care much more about highrises.

As of February of this year it was under construction. Saw with my own eyes and spoke to a developer of the project. Back then the base was complete and it started rising from the desert floor.

On Google maps, there is a picture from a plane that is stated as being from July 2019. If that is the case, there hasn't been any progress since more than a year... Looks like the tower cranes are gone too (no shadows).

Calatrava might start to be known for his holes in the ground.:(

This building is a massive waste of money, holy moly! I hope its never built because it's awful. Dubai has its priorities all wrong to be honest.

There are many ways to attract tourists... this is just a waste like the fellow above mentioned. The money could be used to build better walkable districts or whatever. A tall tower is just not going to improve the city.

mrnyc Sep 2, 2019 12:28 AM

there is a dubai luxury tower property sale event at the langham hotel in a few days maybe somebody could go ask them wassup with this tower project?

aquablue Sep 3, 2019 10:06 PM

They can't even finish the other two Palms. I doubt this thing gets built anytime soon. Also I heard that tourism is stagnating in Dubai this year. Surely such a tower is superfluous and other projects are more important right now.

No way, that is awesome! I wonder if it's still gonna snag the title of world's tallest building
