Jefferson University gets $70 million gift to help pay for new research tower in Philly
Quote:

Philanthropist Sidney Kimmel plans to donate $70 million to Thomas Jefferson University to help pay for a $340 million biomedical research building in Center City, a move designed to strengthen Jefferson’s Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center and its broader research efforts, Jefferson said Thursday.

The new gift comes five years after Jefferson’s medical college was named after Kimmel in recognition of a $110 million donation. Kimmel, 91, has given away $930 million of the fortune he made in fashion, including at least $350 million in Philadelphia, his native city.

What brought Kimmel, who lives in California, back to Jefferson with more money was confidence in the nonprofit’s leadership, he said in an interview this week. In 1996, Kimmel gave $10 million to the school’s cancer center, which was then named after him.

“I am so impressed with our dear friend Steve Klasko, and at the same time with Karen Knudsen heading up the cancer center. I just feel confident that I have the right team running this operation for us in Philadelphia,” he said.

The 220,000-square-foot building, with 12 floors devoted to research, will be named after Kimmel’s wife, Caroline. It will replace the parking garage for the Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience, which is on the northwest corner off Ninth and Locust Streets. The project is in the very early stages, with no timeline for completion.

There really is a ton of proposed development in Washington Square West right now.

The garage its replacing is especially miserable, so this is a real upgrade to that corner.

Looks terrific, and a terrific cause and work will be done here.
Personally, I lost someone close to me to cancer earlier this year (far too young)-- we can't have enough cancer research buildings, and Philadelphia is really at the forefront of it. Whether it be for research (drug development, clinical trials, new treatments) or traditional treatment, if you or a loved one gets cancer, we are so lucky to have these cancer centers in our city. Sidney Kimmel is the man.

Was just announced two months ago. Totally normal to not hear anything new at this point. The main reason projects like this fall apart is lack of funding. They got a 70 million gift to build this, hard to imagine them deciding to give that back. This will be built.

Jefferson CEO reveals plans to build Center City facility 'not like anything that exists today'

Quote:

In December, Jefferson announced it had received</a> a $70 million gift from Sidney and Caroline Kimmel, which it will use for a 12-story biomedical research building at 9th and Locust streets. The research building is expected to cost between $300 million and $350 million to erect on land now used for a Jefferson parking garage. The building will be connected to the Bluemle Life Sciences Building by a bridge to promote exchanges with researchers in the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center.

Good to know this isn't scrapped despite the current climate! They're really making huge changes to center city

Jefferson's Caroline Kimmel Biomedical Research Building - NWC 9th & Locust

900 Walnut Street (legal address, site is NW corner of 9th and Locust), RMX-3 Zoning

Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) is proposing a new building at 900 Walnut St – the Caroline Kimmel Biomedical Research Building. The proposed is an 11-story building having approximately 900% FAR with no residential uses. TJU is seeking City Council legislation to remap the property to allow for the building and uses to CMX-5 which will then make the project “of right”. The legislation will be introduced by councilman Squilla.

This meeting will be informational only. The WSWCA will NOT be opining on the project at this time but we invite neighbors to attend this meeting and discuss the proposed building. There will be at least one more public presentation of this project prior to the civic association rendering a decision regarding this project.

For what it's worth the garage that this building is replacing appears to be permanently closed.

What's the best government resource to determine whether or not a demolition permit has been issued? I live very close to this site and would like to know when to expect the noise to begin.

I have it on good word that this project is slowly (but surely) moving forward. Wouldn't expect any shovels in the ground until the end of the year though.

What's the deal with the handsome rowhomes across the street that are in total disrepair? They've been an eyesore for as long as I can remember. I even remember the ones on the corner which were demolished in the last 5 years. Demolition by neglect?

Such a drab corner on all 4 sides. Will be happy if this goes. Maybe across the street gets improved by Osmosis

Wills Eye owns the whole row, and, you guessed it. The remaining buildings are historically protected, and at some point certainly they'll claim hardship due to their own neglect, and, presumably, a far more expensive replacement
