Erie, Pennsylvania
Best summer spot on the Great Lakes. Waters are so clear and 80 degrees F off Presque Isle. Last 2 pics are mine, from yesterday. I was high as hell as I was pulling my kayak across a secluded beach to the warmest Great Lake waters. https://img.theculturetrip.com/1024x...th-sunrise.jpg https://www.yourerie.com/wp-content/...798_ver1.0.jpg http://www.simpleimageresizer.com/_u...Capture_99.jpg http://www.simpleimageresizer.com/_u...apture1_99.jpg |
I don't live in a city (suburb in Central NJ) but NJ has the famous Jersey Shore. Just a few beaches/beach towns.

i wonder why square buildings are so popular next to the ocean? if they were cylinder a big wave could flow past buildings without much damage.

English Bay is my favorite beach if you are looking for more intimate urban interactions between the beach and the city. |
Unfortunately, due to the water quality, it is still not recommended to swim in the Anacostia or Potomac Rivers in Washington but the water quality of both rivers has been steadily improving and there is a study to examine creating a public swimming area along the Anacostia by 2025.
With global warming, giving residents a place to cool off during periods of excessive heat is going to become an important public health issue. There was one recent study that found the hottest parts of DC to be 17 degrees warmer than the coolest location in DC on certain days. many of Boise's parks have sandy beach areas. Many of the reservoirs in the area also have parks; below are just a few located the city (those first two are within city limits on the eastern edge).

My favorite NYC beach is Fort Tilden. It's surrounded by a former U.S. Army base, and it's now part of the National Parks service. That means almost no chance of being ruined by development. It's also a pain in the ass to get to from Manhattan, so that keeps most of the less sophisticated tourists away.
https://i.redd.it/ksmx9o7sia601.jpg ^From Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/nyc/comment..._tilden_beach/ https://germanamericanabroad.files.w...9/img_4729.jpg ^From here: https://germanamericanabroad.wordpre...t-fort-tilden/ Here's a NY Times slide show from the summer before Sandy: http://archive.nytimes.com/www.nytim...rt-tilden.html The beach was closed for a couple of years after Sandy in order to recover. The storm wiped out the characteristic sand dunes that served as a barrier between the beach and the deactivated base. I've been a few times this summer and this is the closest it has looked to pre-Sandy so far. You can also easily see the Manhattan skyline from various points on the Rockaway peninsula. The views are especially good from the Marine Parkway Bridge between the Rockaway peninsula and Brooklyn. |

Detroit's Belle Isle Beach is barely a beach... The best thing it has going for it is being located in Belle Isle Park, which is an amazing asset for Detroit. The second best thing that Belle Isle Beach has going for it are great views of the Detroit skyline.

I like the looks/setting of those SF area beaches.
Though I prefer to visit beaches where I can actually go in the water without having my penis shrinking to the size of a pencil eraser and my testicles retreating far up into my abdomen. |
Some of my favorite local beaches in the LA/OC area; we've got sandy beaches and rocky beaches with tide pools, cliffs...

There are at least 16 natural beaches in Toronto, plus 2 artificial ones. The most notable though would probably be:
Woodbine, Kew, and Balmy Beach (collectively referred to along with the surrounding neighbourhood as the Beaches). These stretch a combined 3km in the city's east end and is by far the busiest and most popular beach. http://radio.humber.ca/assets/images/updates/beach.png https://radio.humber.ca/index.php?q=...ach-guide.html Hanlan's Beach. Located on the islands, it's a lovely spot and one of only two urban nude beaches in the country. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/d1/c1...51f8d1c437.jpg https://www.pinterest.ca/pin/7248049377725650/ Cherry Beach. Kansas City? Hmmm. I guess maybe you could call this a beach.
Though there are several lakes in the area which I'm sure have something resembling beaches. Sort of. |
For being a coastal city, Shanghai has pretty much shit for beaches.
I guess having to put flooding / typhoon defences everywhere along the coast doesn't help but even without them there wouldn't be much in the line of beaches. Sandy shores just aren't natural on river delta silt. |

The nearest beachish sort of thing to Asheville is the beach at Lake Lure, about 45 minutes southeast of town.
