Discovery Tower & Main Place look amazing!!

Shasta Aug 24, 2007 2:26 PM

The Alkek Patient Tower at MD Anderson Cancer Center will add 9 floors to the original 12 story tower. Construction will begin this fall. Over 200,000 square feet will be added and when finalized, there will be 867 beds in the new 21 story tower.

i often wonder how Houston would look if we combined all of our "downtowns" (downtown, med center, greenway, greenspoint, and the galleria).....would be pretty impressive! :)

latennisguy Aug 25, 2007 1:46 AM

:previous: It is absolutely amazing..and huge! Driving from 610 E to 288 north (look left) and the view is spectacular...from that angle you can see almost a continuous skyline. :slob:

She's always been a little behind the curve.

Shasta Aug 27, 2007 4:50 PM

I caught a little blurb in the Chronicle this morning about a possible tower in midtown...

Quality Infusion Care and Greenberg + Company plan to break ground soon on the 3800 block of Main. The tower is HUGE for midtown standards. 20 floors and 500,000 square feet. Apparently, 65% of the space is pre-leased which means this one is very likely.

I searched briefly to find a rendering but didn't find one.

Saddle Man Aug 27, 2007 4:57 PM

That's great! I would love for Midtown to get a tall skyline all of its own.

Complex01 Aug 27, 2007 5:09 PM

Hmm this is news to me. A new tower would look nice in Midtown. Hopefully there will be some more info out soon...

Xeelee Aug 28, 2007 1:52 PM

This is good news...

CALMSP Aug 29, 2007 2:24 AM

isn't this where the hospital was suppose to go?

Shasta Aug 29, 2007 2:36 AM

Yes.

It's the southwest corner of Main and Alabama. It's currently a very large vacant block.

It is directly across the street from Julia's Bistro and near the Breakfast Klub, T'afia, Tacos-A-Go-Go, The Continental Club, The Big Top, and the beautiful Isabella (Spanish styled) Apartments from the 1920s. It would be served by the Ensemble Theatre lightrail stop one block away.

I've noticed that the back side of the complex, viewed from 288, looks a little, well, industrial. I hope white isn't the finished color, but I can't tell from the partial scaffolding whether anything else is going to be done in the way of cladding.

That would explain why I didn't see a tower crane on the site.

But I did see at least one in the Galleria area, at least 15 in the Medical Center area, and a few dotting the Sam Houston Tollway in the direction of I-10.

The Med Center itself is absolutely amazing. When I was last in Houston in January 2004, they were starting to work on the complex south of Holcombe and east of the old Prudential Building. Now it's all infilled.

And there appears to be no shortage of new projects on either side of Main Street. It rivals whatever Dallas thinks they have going on just north of downtown...

Take the northbound flyover from 610 eastbound to 288 and you'll get an idea.

Unfortunately, I didn't bring a camera with me on this trip, so you'll have to take my word for it. Or ask one of the local Houston photogs to try to take that shot without getting run over... :eeekk:

It certainly is.

Sam Houston Tollway northbound from Main Street to I-10 is quite a shock for someone who hasn't been to the city in four years. BTW, how old is the Technip Tower?

CALMSP Aug 30, 2007 5:02 AM

yes, the 610/288 north is a great view of the entire city........if there was more room on the bridge probably could stop and get a pic.....guess i'll have to do it some sunday morning bright and early!

Cory Aug 30, 2007 2:50 PM

Main Place will be a nice structure in the skyline but it pains me that it will not do anything for Main at street level. Surprising being a block over from Main Street Square. Hopefully the design will not include skywalks and tunnel access. Atleast Hines' garage across the street will have retail. Hopefully that will look a little better when some life and color is added at the bottom of the structure.

Shasta Aug 30, 2007 3:21 PM

Here's the rendering for the Buffalo Bayou Partnership's plan to turn the old Sunset Coffee Bldg. downtown into a canoe/kayak/restaurant/office space for the organization/event space. Lake Flato is the architectural firm of record.

Where'd you get the idea it will do nothing for Main at street level? I believe the plans include street level retail, including on Main Street.

Xeelee Aug 30, 2007 6:38 PM

Is that you shasta on the chron commons?

Shasta Aug 30, 2007 7:51 PM

Post Properties is getting ready to build another midtown apartment community. This one will be located on Richmond Avenue, Milam, and Colquitt. It will be called Richmond Landing.

i'm trying to think of what open area is over there............is there a link?? i hope they continue with their Post Rice and my place Post Midtown with groundlevel retail/restaurants

Saddle Man Aug 31, 2007 1:23 PM

This needs ground floor retail. If you've ever lived in a place like this, which I won't do again, on the ground floor you'll know why. It's nothing but people staring into your apartment. For a store that's good, but for an apartment, that's bad. Opening the blinds or curtains is a nice thing to do, and the bottom to top blinds aren't any good. I already tried those.

Complex01 Aug 31, 2007 2:18 PM

:previous:

I totally agree. There needs to be ground retail. That is how you will get people walking about and really give it more a positive atmosphere. Midtown is getting denser by the day...

Great_Hizzy Aug 31, 2007 10:27 PM

Richmond @ Milam? That'd be a nice corner for that type of development. And only a block west of the Main Street Line.

I didn't read anything about Hines' project having retail. Discovery Tower but not Hines' Main Place. Maybe you read some other source I do not know about.

The new Post place will be perfect if Metro ever decides to build the University line. That will be the transfer point near the Wheeler station.

I often wonder who in their right mind would want to live on the ground floor at places like Camden, Post, 2222 Smith.....all of us drunk bar patrons can peek right inside!! That's why I'll take my 4th floor loft!!

It looks a lot like the complex just north of Sears, off of the 59 Elevated.

You sure you spelled that word correctly? :P

I thought the Houston tradition was four floors of residential on two floors of parking. Who needs retail?

Hip new hotel going 'aloft' in Houston

Houston Business Journal - September 14, 2007
by Jennifer Dawson
Houston Business Journal

The brains behind upscale hotel brands such as Westin, St. Regis and W are high on Houston for a new hospitality concept.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. has given the green light for an "aloft" hotel in the Galleria area. The $40 million hotel is being developed just west of the Galleria mall, where Westheimer meets West Alabama.

Xeelee Sep 15, 2007 1:33 PM

I like that... i take it it's some sort of "loft" concept thing, eh?

CALMSP Sep 15, 2007 8:24 PM

does anyone know what the plan is on Main steet by the HCC stop?? there is a large 1-2 block radius that was demolished and leveled.

Shasta Sep 17, 2007 8:23 PM

Randall Davis is at it again...

With only 3 units remaining to sell in the unfinished Cosmopolitan on Post Oak, ole Randall decided to get busy with another project nearby.

Randall Davis closed on the property currently occupied by a McDonald's. The Titan is set to rise there. 26 floors. 80 units. McDs will move to the northern part of the property while The Titan will rise on the corner of Post Oak Blvd. and Garrettson Rd.

WOW. Is this really the Houston compilation thread? Nice updates since I have been gone. The Mosaic looks basically completed and it's amazing how fast Houston Pavilions has progressed. Can someone get a closer pic of the One Park Place rendering at street level that is on page 31? Looks interesting. Since when is there a demand for so many new office towers downtown?

Complex01 Sep 18, 2007 4:06 PM

Nice updates...

Here are some more updates on downtown construction/proposals...
The first two pics are of a scale model of Houston Center, showing a proposed 6 Houston Center. This proposed 6 Houston has been in the news recently, but this scale model is well over 3 years old and is on display in 2 Houston, where I work.

I walked by the Cathedral this past weekend. I have to say it is really something to look at. I cant wait to get inside and look at look at the architecture and what not. On the same note, the area around this plot of land has so many parking lots. There is so much potential for this area, even if it's just a few buildings, it would really do something to the skyline as well as the area...

CALMSP Sep 20, 2007 11:49 PM

all of downtown/midotwn has lots of potential. for such a large city, we sure do have plenty of downtown spots to build!!

Shasta Sep 21, 2007 3:37 AM

I wouldn't have guessed that 6 Houston Center would have been built across the park from 5 Houston Center to the South. In fact, now that I think about it, "the park" as shown between the two buildings is where One Park Place is now rising, right? If so, I hope they change the design for 6 Houston Center because it won't make any sense with a 501 foot traditional styled tower standing inbetween!

rdavis4559 Sep 21, 2007 8:51 AM

Yah the location or design for 6 Houston indeed might change.

There really is a lot of potential for building in downtown Houston. Walking around the Cathedral being built, there are small passport photo shops, car lube centers, and a lot of other small businesses. The view of the skyline when walking around this area is actually pretty nice because you can see most of downtown without near buildings blocking the view. But hey, I'm all for more development.

rdavis4559 Sep 21, 2007 5:24 PM

Here are the Pavilions from the sky lobby in Wells Fargo Plaza:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...s_From_WFP.jpg

Shasta Sep 21, 2007 5:25 PM

Ed Wulfe has stated that the first phase of BLVD Place will break ground in October. The 70,000 square foot first building will house 7 current tenants like Hermes, Americas, and Cafe Annie. This will allow Wulfe & Co to then tear down the old Saks and strip mall.

Also, it's been leaked that Hanover plans to develop a FIFTY-FIVE story apartment tower as part of the massive project. NICE NICE NICE. A tower that size, even with a flat roof, would rise to around 610 to 670 feet tall.
