3 Oceans treads carefully to avoid Scarborough backlash

The Chinese property, media and tourism powerhouse behind the proposed $400 million, 40-level Scarborough beach hotel, apartment and convention site, is keen to avoid the residential backlash that has stymied high-rise development worth close to $1 billion in South Perth.

The first workshop was held last night. The thin, twin towers and base, on the Contacio bar site at the intersection of West Coast Highway and Scarborough Beach Road, will include a 180-room four-star hotel, a 3000sqm beachside international convention centre — Perth’s first — and 300 apartments.

As well as the three-level indoor-outdoor public viewing platform on the 40th level, plans include vertical gardens, two levels of high-quality commercial tenancies and an open, pedestrian-friendly food and drink ground-floor space and a 350 to 400-bay public carpark.

Scarborough 3 Oceans twin towers granted development approval

Quote:

A CONTENTIOUS $450 million twin-tower high-rise development in Scarborough has been given the green light.

A revised version of the development, which reduced its overall size in part by cutting the number of apartments and hotel rooms, has received development approval from the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority.

It comprises a 43-storey and a 33-storey tower, a 119-room hotel and 314 apartments. The top floor will include an art gallery and café.

The original plan for the site was knocked back by the MRA in December amid concerns it was too big. Its size and design have been divisive in the Scarborough community.

Scarborough Beach twin towers development on hold as 3 Oceans explores other options

Quote:

The developers of Scarborough's contentious twin towers hotel and apartment development have met with the West Australian Government and officially advised that the project is on hold.

In a statement released late on Thursday morning, a spokesman for developer 3 Oceans said he was disappointed to confirm the project was on hold.

He said a comprehensive review of the project had determined it was not financially viable in the current market.

In a statement given to ABC Radio Perth, Planning Minister Rita Saffioti said she was told 3 Oceans would now be exploring other options and engaging a new design team.
