Rice to break ground on new performing arts hall

The school announced Monday that it will break ground in September on a new music, theater and opera building designed by Allan Greenberg Architect LLC. that will be connected by a plaza to the school's existing Alice Pratt Brown Hall.

The combined facility, to be called the Rice University Music and Performing Arts Center, will further energize the west end of the campus, where the new Moody Center for the Arts is nearly completed, to create "a real hub of arts activity," Shepherd School dean Robert Yekovich said.

Houston's new restaurant row

French brasserie to open at One Park Place

When One Park Place opened downtown in spring 2009, the Finger Companies had always planned to have a restaurant concept on the La Branch side of the building facing Discovery Green. But for years developer Marvy Finger resisted offers for the space that passersby would never know existed.

Now he's found a tenant he admires and a grand new restaurant, set to open this fall, will be constructed in a two-level space. Chef Philippe Verpiand and his wife Monica, owners of Etoile Cuisine et Bar in the Galleria area, have signed a deal with Finger to open Brasserie du Parc, a French restaurant with about 5,500 square feet of space within what is perhaps downtown's toniest residential address.

The restaurant will be situated at La Branch and Lamar streets with giant folding glass doors overlooking Discovery Green. The space features about 3,000 square feet on the main level with a 1,000-square-foot mezzanine and an additional 1,500 square feet of terrace space fronting the building. It will be designed to look like an authentic French brasserie with plenty of brass, antique mirrors and tile floors.

What do you think of 609 Main? I really like it.

I visited over Christmas, and my other favorite is the new Amegy building in Uptown.

609 Main is great, Ill still never get over how they tore down that beautiful art deco tower though to build it. There were about a billion other vacant lots downtown where it could have gone, but other than that, its great looking.

Are there any plans to connect the proposed HSR station to the downtown core? I've heard Houstonis expanding its rail network, so I didn't know if there were any new ideas to connect it to the station.

I haven't heard anything.

A year ago, Texas Central did a preliminary EIS and decided it would be too much trouble to extend the HSR to downtown through the Heights to a station site on the northern edge of downtown.

The station will likely be where Northwest Mall is currently located. Which would probably be okay because that is close to Uptown. Also if I had to guess, it is closer to the mean population center of the greater Houston metro area than downtown itself.

Charlotte, North Carolina-based Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) is in negotiations to anchor Capitol Tower, a 35-story, 750,000-square-foot tower that hasn't broken ground yet.

Bank of America has been in talks with New York-based Skanska USA Commercial Development, the tower's developer, for more than a year, sources close to the deal told the Houston Business Journal. The bank would take between 200,000 and 250,000 square feet in the downtown tower.

“Recently, we have been in talks with a number of tenants interested in Capitol Tower, and we are optimistic that the downtown leasing market will continue to present new opportunities as we move through 2017," the statement read. "Capitol Tower is a premier address in the heart of downtown and we look forward to going from ‘in development’ to ‘under construction.’”

Bank of America's lease – or any other anchor tenant's lease, for that matter – would prompt construction to start on Capitol Tower. The tower has been in the planning stages since 2014 and hasn't broken ground yet. In June, a company spokesperson told the Houston Business Journal that the company wouldn't move forward on vertical construction until market conditions improve.

Bank of America is currently the anchor tenant at Bank of America Center at 700 Louisiana in downtown Houston. If Bank of America anchors Capitol Tower, the company would move out of Bank of America Center and consolidate its downtown footprint into Capitol Tower, sources say. The bank would consolidate into significantly less space than it occupies today, sources said. It's unclear if Bank of America's lease at Capitol Tower would include naming rights.
