Amazon Pitches Boise on New Storage and Distribution Center at Boise Airport

The Boise City Council will consider a proposal from Amazon to build a new air cargo center at the Boise Airport as part of a ground lease for up to 35 years, with possible endorsement coming Tuesday evening at the council's regular weekly meeting.

By Kevin Fixler and Paul Schwedelson

Quote:

If approved, the deal would call for Amazon to rent about 151,000 square feet of property at the airport to construct a roughly 31,000-square-foot air cargo building and make other upgrades to store and distribute the e-commerce giant's goods.

The Seattle-headquartered company — one of the world's most successful private enterprises — also would use the space to load and unload trucks and trailers, store the vehicles and make service repairs to inbound and outbound aircraft, according to the proposal.

Amazon would cover the cost of construction of the center, and would own the building. With planned expansions worked into the agreement, the lease could expand to more than 171,000 square feet of airport property, or nearly 4 acres.

Alaska Airlines Explains Its Strategy In Boise
by

Alaska Airlines in Boise in 2022
Come June 2022, Alaska Airlines will have over doubled its destination count compared to June 2019. Below is the list of Alaska’s top destinations from Boise in June 2022 by monthly seat count, using data from Cirium. Note that this excludes the seasonal winter service to Palm Springs from Boise:
Quote:

Moving forward, the question in Boise will be where – and not if – Alaska Airlines keeps growing in the city. There are plenty of markets that could work with service onboard an Embraer E175, which could be the right aircraft for unlocking some new routes or growing frequencies on routes that partners already operate. Alternatively, the growing Alaska base in Boise could become a catalyst for a partner, like American, to add more flights to Boise or increase capacity.
Quote:

Boise is one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States. Growing in might thanks to a growing population and business-friendly environment, there could be a lot of promise in the market moving forward. Coupled with Alaska’s entry into the oneworld alliance and close partnership with American Airlines, the carrier is primed to offer the growing corporate traveler base the best value proposition in destinations and frequencies.

The new parking garages are part of the BOI Upgrade Airport Expansion Project, a multi-year capital improvement plan with costs estimated at $200 million to $250 million. Other phases include a new rental car lobby and garage and a brand-new concourse.

1) New exit plaza
2) Tear down old exit plaza
3) Build parking garage
4) Finish employee parking garage
5) Build car rental garage and car rental extension
6) Move car rental agencies to new rental extension
7) Move car rental parking to parking garage
8) Build concourse A
9) Move escalators further back into the current car rental area (where you would drop into the bottom level of the airport much sooner as you come out of the concourse area) and widen the security checkpoint.

A few of those may get rearranged, but so far that seems to be the order of the plans.

I had heard years ago when they rebuilt the airport that the plan was to eventually extend the ticketing area to the east and add four more baggage claim areas underneath that new extension. if you look at the current airport, essentially the new ticketing/baggage area would mirror what's there now.

not sure if that was ever the plan, but it seems like it would make sense to do eventually. the new addition would basically be on the location of the old airport terminal, and would add a second security checkpoint, too.

I believe that was from the very first master plan related to the current terminal. That was before kiosks, bag drops, and web/app check in. I’m sure there will be a need at some point, but probably not anytime soon.

Boisebro Jan 26, 2022 10:22 PM

it'd be kind of a shame if they didn't complete it that way.

i recall thinking that it was a clever design that loosely mimicked the capitol building: a rotunda in the middle and two wings.

oh well. a second security area and more baggage claims would be nice. the biggest need is really a cell phone lot... every time i go to the airport to pick someone up, the cell phone waiting line is packed.

Boise could see pilot program for 3-wheel scooters, over a year after it was floated

Study to reopen Amtrak service to Boise steaming ahead

"Efforts to reboot the mothballed passenger rail service through Boise are cruising ahead.

In November 2021, Congress passed President Joe Biden’s infrastructure package with $41.5 billion in new funding for Amtrak to expand and upgrade its national network. Some of these funds were allocated for a study examining the potential operation and economic impact of reopening Amtrak’s Pioneer Line, which carried passengers from Portland through Pendleton, Oregon, Boise, Pocatello and south to Salt Lake City through the late 1990s.

Officials in Boise are hopeful this study is the first step toward reestablishing passenger rail service through the Treasure Valley and southern Idaho. Bringing rail back would give passengers more choices for traveling the region without having the hassle of flying or traversing dangerous roads during the winter months..."

Train travel plan gains steam

Quote:

BOISE — For the first time in more than a quarter century, momentum for train lines in Western U.S. states may be on the fast track.

Idaho’s elected officials have renewed their efforts to bring passenger trains back to the Mountain West, after Congress passed the federal infrastructure bill last year with bipartisan support. In November, President Joe Biden signed into law the $1.2 trillion spending package, which includes major funding to expand the nation’s passenger rail network.

In recent weeks, Boise and other state leaders met with officials from Amtrak, the U.S.’s heavily subsidized, semi-public rail company, to discuss the possible return of the former Pioneer Line passenger rail line that ran between Seattle and Chicago, with stops in Portland, Boise, Salt Lake City and Denver. The route ran for 20 years before it was discontinued in 1997 as a casualty of federal budget cuts, in part because of low ridership. Passenger trains served the region for decades before as well, ahead of Amtrak’s launch in 1971.

Future of flight at BOI: Runways, concourses and parking – here’s what’s ahead at the Boise Airport

Bodo_business Nov 11, 2022 4:23 PM

Was going through TSA this morning and noticed they were installing Clear terminals where The River Gift Shop used to be. Guessing that means either the demographics of Clear members say it was time, or they are expecting a big increase in traffic in future. Pre in Boise is usually a breeze but this will be nice for those few times there is a line. I haven’t looked at their location list in a while, but thinking BOI may be the smallest airport where they are deployed.

Work begins on Boise’s $100 million car-rental center
By DAVID STAATS Idaho Statesman Dec 11, 2022

BOISE — Air travelers who fly into the Boise Airport and rent cars would see big changes if an expansion of vehicle-rental operations proceeds as expected.

As passenger traffic keeps increasing alongside the Boise area’s population growth, the city-run airport is preparing a $100 million car-rental center. The project is one piece of a multiyear expansion of parking, car rental, concourse and other spaces.
