AMEN!

Edmonton has an almost identical twin of the old terminal which is now at risk of losing its tower and removing what i classify as the 'identifiable silhouette' of YEG.

Sad really that they cannot respect the old terminal, add on a modern wing, and then bind them together.

Just checked AC's timetable and there are direct flights to Montreal and Quebec City. Edmonton and Moncton had direct flights too but have just been discontinued. Note that these are direct flights, not non stop flights. The plan makes a stop either Toronto or Ottawa first.

Lufthansa to Offer Year-Round, Nonstop Service From Montreal to Munich

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Oct. 4, 2010) - Announced today, Lufthansa now offers year-round direct Montreal-Munich service beginning October 2010. Demand for year-round access to this important European hub from Montreal has led to the expansion of Lufthansa's previous seasonal (summer) service.

Lufthansa will operate five flights a week – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday – in the winter season, and daily flights in the summer. Flight LH 475 will depart Montreal at 8:20 pm arriving in Munich the next day at 9:55 am local time. Flight LH 474 will depart Munich at 3:40 pm with arrival in Montreal at 6:30 pm. The flights will operate with an Airbus A330-300 aircraft with 221 seats (8 in First Class, 48 in Business Class and 165 in Economy Class).

"Lufthansa is the only airline offering nonstop service between Montreal and the Bavarian capital, with convenient connections to 117 onward destinations in 44 countries. This year alone, six new cities were added to the vast Munich network including Bursa/Turkey, Riyadh/Saudi Arabia, Rostock/Germany, Tallinn/Estonia, Taschkent/Uzbekistan and Zadar/Croatia," said Lars Koeplin, newly appointed regional director for Lufthansa in Canada.

The expanded schedule complements the nonstop, year-round Montreal-Frankfurt code share service available via Air Canada, providing travellers in eastern Canada with direct access to two global hubs. Together, they offer Canadian travellers connections to more than 200 destinations in 82 European, Middle East, African and Asian countries.

To kick-off the expanded service, Lufthansa is offering discounted fares to 31 cities in Europe, starting at CAD 250 to Munich (one-way, based on a roundtrip purchase, excluding taxes and fees). The fall Europe promotion is available for sale until October 13, 2010. Check lufthansa.com for details or your nearest travel agent.

Only The Lonely.. Oct 7, 2010 6:10 PM

I have mixed feelings about Winnipeg's old terminal..

It's a great example of modernism, but it was city run for so many years and the facility was never really kept up.

The clean vistas that were a hallmark of its design have since been filled with all sorts of promotional crap like vending machines, car raffles, various kiosks, etc.

Sadly, as much as I like our new terminal it does sort of look like every other airport built in the last 10 years.

I was just in Winnipeg over the weekend, I guess that was the last time I'll use the old terminal. By this time next year when I next travel there on business I'll be in the new terminal.

Thanks for sharing

Coldrsx Nov 15, 2010 8:15 PM

The expansion is MASSIVE and hard to grasp from these pictures, but it literally doubles the size of our airport.

That Winnipeg airport expansion looks awesome! How many passengers a year is it aiming to accomodate now? 5 million? 6 million?

I believe it's something like that. This new terminal building was constructed to add another Phase or two, which will add millions more in capacity for future growth.

Coldrsx Jan 9, 2011 1:24 AM

Looking good Winnipeg.

roccerfeller Jan 9, 2011 2:09 AM

This new terminal is also designed to accommodate wide body aircraft...something the current terminal I believe does not accommodate.

They want direct flights to Europe, so no more connecting flights for us :D

dennis Jan 9, 2011 9:38 AM

The arrivals area looks better with the LED lights around the skighlights turned on.

The Winnipeg terminal looks great and Saskatoon looks promising! Do most airports in Canada put the arrivals and departures on top of eachother like seen in those Winnipeg photos? We have it in Ottawa (built 2003) and it makes it so much easier to pick up/drop off people at the airport. Who was the first? The photo below shows the arrivals on the ground level with the departures drop off area on the structure above. The skybridge connects the terminal (right) with the parkade (left).

http://www.ottawa-airport.ca/images/...inalBridge.jpg

Here are a couple of shots of YOW's parkade expansion from December. I didn't realize there was that much of a demand for parking (I can always find a spot when needed), but I guess they are preparing for the future.

The_Architect Jan 10, 2011 2:35 AM

^ Pearson does that too, with the Departures and Arrivals being on separate levels. It's just more efficient for moving people through the airport and terminals to and from their planes.

SpongeG Jan 10, 2011 3:35 AM

Vancouver's old and new airport expansion have always had the arrivals and departures on separate levels - arrivals on the bottom - departures on top

Bigtime Jan 10, 2011 3:36 AM

Calgary also has the departures and arrivals on separate levels.

Looking good Winnipeg, can't wait to try out that new terminal!

We here in Calgary are waiting for more renderings and plans of the new International Facilities Project: http://www.yyc.com/Default.aspx?cid=311&lang=1

This is the only rendering we have so far:

The new parallel runway (34R/16L) will be breaking ground this spring and the IFP project will not be far behind.

I agree. There is so much roof area there, it could probably be a fully-functioning farm!

Cool. After looking at that I was thinking about how the car rental companies access their lots? (Cluster of buildings south of airport) I know from my days at Hertz (looong time ago) the lot was down the service road, which now looks like its cut off from the airport?

Guess they have to go south towards McKnight then around Deerfoot or through the NE..

I never even thought about that. I would guess the rental companies are planning to move to empty lots north of Airport trail.

Plenty of room to expand north of pier D (the Westjet arm) and wrap around to the north. Also keep in mind with Barlow closed there will be that space to the east of the portion of Barlow that is staying.

Edit: Here is a quick and dirty MSpaint showing the available areas:

Lot's of interesting projects going around.
YEG's expansion is massive!! I think it will be double its current size, and damn impressive.

roccerfeller Jan 11, 2011 4:05 AM

Yeah I remember seeing YEG's expansion when I was in Edmonton last...it sure has progressed a lot since I was there.

Lookin good ;)

And Calgary's is shaping up nicely...I hope those renders become realtime soon. I remember all the progress its made from the tiny airport they started off with....now its a huge airport haha. Oh Calgary. You boom-town you.

2007 passengers: 12.26 million

Projected growth: 30 million annual capacity by 2030

Expansion: $3 billion by 2018 - includes international transborder concourse, which will add 20 new gates and associated aircraft apron; expansions to the transborder baggage facility and Canadian Inspection Services area; more surface parking and 2,000-stall addition to car parkade; fourth runway, 4,267 metres

Airport Improvement Fee: $20 for all departing non-connecting passengers

Neat features: White Hat volunteers. Space Port Educational Facility. 30-minute free parking

Major complaint: Congestion at U.S. transborder concourse

You mention that 30 million will be the capacity by 2030, but actually YYC is expected to handle 27 million passengers by 2025. If they can grow at a moderate 4% per year, they should be able to reach 24-25 million passengers by 2025. Traffic at YYC grew by average 6% pa since 1995-2009 and there is no reason that it cannot continue to grow at 4% pa average for the next 15 years.

That's probably the high number, but even if they grow at a reasonable 3% pa, they will cross 20 million passengers in 15 years.

I was once told that the concept was borrowed from train stations, the first with double level road access being Grand Central Terminal in New York.

I don't look at this thread often, so it's nice to see all the action going on at airports around the country. Props to Winnipeg and Edmonton airports. Those are nice looking projects. Calgary's new International terminal looks great too, nice to hear the a BP has been generated.

Some major stuff going on these days.

Winnipeg has competition when it comes to sunny destinations. Some Manitobans are choosing to travel to Grand Forks or Fargo to reach sunbelt destinations in the US at reduced cost. Somethings gotta give.....

Same thing is happening in areas like Greater Vancouver, Greater Toronto and any other cities near the border. When you can get flights to Palm Springs from Bellingham, WA for 39$ each way, and you live less than an hour away, how can you refuse?
