Airport Terminal Building expansion to begin this summer. Following a meeting of Kelowna City Council on Monday the Kelowna International Airport (YLW) is one step closer to starting construction on the terminal building expansion. Council has approved funding for the $90-million terminal building expansion project, the largest infrastructure project to date at YLW. The project will be funded through fees paid by airport users and will have no taxation impact to Kelowna taxpayers. The YLW terminal building was already over capacity in 2019 which is restricting growth in air service, food & beverage services, and regional economic development. “This investment in YLW will have significant benefits for all of Kelowna,” said Kelowna Mayor Tom Dyas. “It is an investment in our regional economy, helping to support increased air service for both passengers and goods.” YLW has been getting ready for this major infrastructure project during the last seven months with enabling works projects around the airport, including excavation and other civil works. Passengers will continue to see preparations this spring, as enabling works projects continue, leading up to the terminal building construction starting summer 2023. “We know that construction will have impacts to guests visiting YLW, such as noise and impacts to existing amenities and parking. Our team is working to minimize these impacts as much as possible,” said Sam Samaddar, Kelowna Airport Director. “We will be sharing more information about what passengers can expect at YLW as we approach construction. We thank everyone for their patience as we complete this work to make these important improvements.” Phase 1 of the expansion will add approximately 5,590 square metres of new space to the terminal building and 1,200 square metres of renovated space to the existing terminal building. This will include: • expanded Departures Lounge to improve connections to aircraft gates and increased food and beverage options • expanded security screening area to reduce the time it takes to clear security • new direct access to south gates for departing and arriving passengers • improved wayfinding Construction for Phase 1 of the terminal building construction will begin this summer and is planned to be complete in 2026. CMN, ALG, TLV, GRU & LIS are all missing from that list.
Also the second FCO is now a 789. |

But like I said, there are some errors in the article. It is simpleflying, after all. Condor and Openskies never flew to YUL. Level did, briefly for a season or two. Also, I wouldn’t characterize YUL-KEF as long haul (6hr+ is the IATA definition of long haul, and KEF is only 5h05). It’s therefore mid-haul (3-6hr). Edit: Even if you remove KEF, the number of long haul is actually higher than 24, because several YUL- US west coast flights clock in around 6 hr, or even more. YUL-SAN 5h53 (1x daily on August 5) YUL-SEA 5h59 (1x daily on August 5) YUL-LAX 5h59 (3x daily on August 5) YUL-SFO 6h14 (2x daily on August 5) Also, YUL-DUB no longer operates on saturdays, but on sundays, so it doesn't operate August 5. |

(789) Reduce YUL-GRU to 4x weekly (to rotate with DEL, free up spot Mon Tues) (788) Split YUL/YVR-DUB rotation, remove YVR flights, move Tues to the plane above, then share with the new AMS route for 5x weekly. They still have a slot to add new long-hual flight on Monday. For YVR: DUB will rotate with PVG for 3 of the 4 days. Either they'll have to remove a Friday flight from one of DUB/PVG/ICN/KIX, or add 6 more weekly long hual flight from YVR using a new plane. If they choose to reduce, no extra planes is actually needed for introducing YUL-AMS For YYZ: NRT and one of LHR becomes 788. One of the 789 move to YVR to upgauge KIX/ZRH, the other one upgauge the extra FCO flights from both YYZ/YUL, plus a few others. |

Curious if maybe they did get offered slots but can’t use them due a lack of 787s. |

If they wanted to they probably could have made a deal. |
JetBlue got temporary slots with shitty timings. Far from ideal.

Came across this project early this week.
Rankin Inlet Nunavut. I had been flying in quite a few times over the years and the current terminal just got worse and worse as the population and aircraft movements increased. This is the main airport for the central arctic region (Kivallik). Lots of flights from Winnipeg as well as a major stopping point for flights going east and west from Iqaluit to Yellowknife. In the attached file you can see the old green monster in the back. Current construction has the Thermal Siphens in the ground and actual construction starts this summer. https://www.prairiearchitects.ca/ran...inal-expansion The thermal Syphens keep the ground frozen and allows the building to be constructed at grade. |

I've made a booking. Sorry Flair, I'm not taking risks with you! |

But the top left door you refer to appears to be the exit from baggage to the curb. |

If you look at the image gallery you will see the old green terminal. There once was a secure hold room but they out grew it and the space was made a common room. One thing you learn in Nunavut is the Airport is the central meeting place and when a flight comes in there are a lot of people there to check out who has arrived. After all my years of travel up there I found it quite enjoyable. Infact I got a ride from a few people that had trucks even the RCMP. |

Always though the no security to Winnipeg was weird. |
The flair cuts have begun amid them losing 4 aircraft.
They've also slimmed some core frequencies in May/June as well as frequencies in the summer. Ill let nname spill all the beans since he has an efficient way to do things. One thing for sure: YKF-YEG - axed |

Basically 70% of the route have time change. Only thing for certain from quickly looking at the schedule... the bases that lost planes are YXX (x2) and YKF (x1). The YVR/YEG/YYC/YYZ reduction are due to the need to cover for YXX and YKF. |
That looks like it’s enough to cover the reduced fleet size. Assuming they can survive the next few weeks, months, maybe this is the swift kick in the butt for them to rationalize.
YOW-FLL would be a return to seasonal, returning late October. It was rather surprising they were keeping it for this summer to begin with. |
Looks like there was a fire last night inside the YYT terminal building, on the second floor. The terminal building will be closed until tomorrow evening. This will surely screw up the travel plans of thousands this weekend.
https://stjohnsairport.com/wp-conten...ch-25-2023.pdf On an unrelated note, YYZ published its 2022 stats. Total passengers: 35.6 million +180.8% Domestic: 14.3 million +111.5% International: 21.3 million +260.1% https://www.newswire.ca/news-release...846490194.html I updated wiki. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...in_Canada#2022 |
Speaking of YYT,
Looks like PD has applied to the CTA for scheduled service authority to a bunch of countries, including Cuba, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Haiti, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Panama, the UK and the EU. https://otc-cta.gc.ca/eng/decisions-determinations The application for sun routes isn't a surprise, but the UK/EU is, as far as I'm concerned. The only place they could theoretically fly the E195 to the UK is from YYT. DUB is doable from both YYT and YHZ. As for the Central American applications, the only places they could comfortably reach Panama or Costa Rica from is YYZ/YUL/YOW. Once again, I can't help but highlight the inability of the E195 to compete effectively in these markets versus the Canadian incumbents, which utilize 189 seat 737s, or even widebodies to the countries mentioned. |

Maybe Porter knows of some Max 8's coming available soon at a Canadian airport near you? Would be odd for them to add a third type so soon, but who knows?

Air Canada has its codeshares with Star Alliance. WestJet is mostly entering into codeshares with Skyteam. If Porter enters into agreements with the Oneworld airlines that provides options for connecting. We now need to have Porter displace all those silly ULCC airlines that don't know how to make onward connections. |
Quote:
"Because of the persistent failure to pay the leases on time, airplane lessors were actively shopping around 11 of the MAXs in Flair’s fleet to other airlines before the four were seized. According to an interview Jones gave to the Globe & Mail in Toronto, the other seven planes were saved from that fate only when 777 Partners finally made the lease payments." Not reassuring. |
Quote:
They are taking 50 E195s, so that's a fair number of aircraft. There's not a ton of underserved capacity in the market. Admittedly Embraer needs to keep production going, so Porter could be getting an exceptionally good deal on those planes, so maybe the math pencils out? The odour of money burning in the Canadian aviation scene has markedly increased. Just like the tinges of smoke from a far away forest fire. |

Seeking route authorities to fly sun routes was a given. |
Today PD launches YOW-BOS daily, YOW-EWR 2x daily and YOW-YQT 2x daily.
https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/p ... 33484.html This brings PD's total YOW destination count up to 8 with YYG coming on May 17. AC also resume YOW-YQB today (only resumed for about 6 weeks last spring until the Jazz schedule trimming and travel surge meltdown) and UA add a 3rd daily YOW-EWR bringing *A to 4x on the route and finally bringing back an EWR late afternoon departure that actually leaves past noon. Since October 2022 YOW-EWR on UA/AC has been 3x but bizarrely all the departures were in the morning. |
WS Cargo filed initial routes in the OAG, as outlined by Aeroroutes:
https://www.aeroroutes.com/eng/230327-wscns23 YYC-YYZ - 3x weekly YYC-YYZ-YHZ - 5x weekly YYC-YVR-LAX - Up to 1x daily YYZ-MIA - 1x daily YYZ-YVR - 5x weekly Flight numbers are in the 9000-9199 area. |
So YUL, YYC and YVR have January 2023 numbers now posted. Percentages are compared to the same month in 2019. Interesting bits in red.
YVR Total: 1,794,415 -11.5% Domestic: 876,305 -7.0% International: 489,179 -17.0% Transborder: 428,931 -13.4% https://www.yvr.ca/-/media/yvr/docum...passengers.pdf YUL Total: 1,486,103 -3.0% Domestic: 416,277 -15.1% International: 744,761 +6.2% Transborder: 325,065 -4.5% https://www.admtl.com/sites/default/...ats_jan_EN.pdf YYC Total: 1,221,998 -12.0% Domestic: 809,122 -13.8% International: 190,134 +3.3% Transborder: 222,742 -16.2% https://www.yyc.com/en-us/media/fact...tatistics.aspx So YUL is more or less at 2019 numbers. International is way up. Domestic is disappointing. Then again, it always was, and always will be disappointing. YVR is still well below 2019 numbers, especially on the international count. YYC's international numbers are above that of 2019, but the rest still has some catch up to do, same as YVR. |

Air France's YUL-CDG route is showing back up to 4x daily this summer after it was reduced to 3 daily in Feb.
KLM's YUL-AMS also showing daily from 5x weekly. I'm guessing they did not like AC adding AMS. |
WS added some additional transborder flights in June:
YYZ-BNA Increased to up to 6x weekly YYC-LAX Increased to up to 23x weekly (4 flights on Sat / some Thu) YYC-PHX Increased to up to 16x weekly YYC-BNA Increased to 5x weekly YYC-SFO Increased to 17x weekly (previously this took effect June 30) |

It says an extra 32.85%. That means the new charge is $34 instead of $29.51. So an extra $ 4.49. For overseas flights. Domestic and trans-border tickets are cheaper. Here is the current rate structure..... https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-age...tsc-rates.html |
For most of the month of May, AC have scheduled the 77L on YVR-YOW. YOW has never had 777 service before beyond one-off subs here and there.

Porter is increasing Ottawa - Charlottetown to 11x weekly and up to 14x weekly in peak summer before the route even begins due to strong bookings.
Definitely helps that AC isn't resuming the seasonal route this summer. Porter News Release Quote:

Porter Airlines Canada Limited and Porter Airlines Inc. What's that about? Different IATA codes, PD vs P3. https://www.iata.org/en/publications...s/code-search/ Wonder if this is related to the lawsuit they faced? A lot of the Q400 flights seem to have switched to P3, based on that aeroroutes article. |

Speaking of Encore, I caught a Q landing at YOW a few days ago. Might be the last time I see one in the east. Pretty amazing to hear PD are doubling capacity before the route even starts and even more so with F8 also on the route. |
Another YOW increase on top of the temporary 77L and restoration of YEG-YOW to year-round. AC are now showing with the start of the winter schedule YYC-YOW increasing back to 2x daily with both flights showing upgauged to 7M8s.
