Technically it's even a capacity cut as the DH4s had 78 seats vs 76 on the E75.

Flair fly YYJ-YOW nonstop seasonally but only on Saturdays.

May work for some. I have a meetings Thursday and Friday. Perhaps the Saturday return could work.

I had a bad experience with Flair pre-covid when they were flying 737-400 that has kept me from ever considering them. It is a few years, maybe I can given them a try again.

The 400s are long gone and those range issues along with it. Even if nonstop is an hour late, it sure beats a YYZ, YYC or YVR connection.

According to posts on the YYC Calgary International Airport Facebook / Twitter page. YYC handle a total of 14.5 million passengers in 2022. (Although the December passenger stats hasn’t been posted yet on YYC airport website).

“We’re pleased to tell you that YYC welcomed 14.5 million guests in 2022— recovering 81 per cent of our 2019 passenger traffic. With more than 85 non-stop destinations in Canada, the U.S., and around the world, YYC is Alberta’s gateway to the world.”

Air France is coming to YOW 5x weekly! I'm guessing some poster(s) here will be confused and disappointed it wasn't YYZ, YUL, YVR, or YYC since it won't fit the narrative of pushing to Canadian hubs. https://corporate.airfrance.com/en/n...rles-de-gaulle

:previous:

They're not coming to Ottawa. They're coming to Gatineau. They are just forced to use the airport on the Ottawa side of the river. :)

AF doesn't serve YYC, but they do serve YQB, so they've been against that narrative since last year. Great news for YOW ! AF has had daily bus service from Montreal to Ottawa for as long as I can remember, so they are not unfamiliar with the market. Explaining why they are going strong right away with 5x weekly service. (YQB is only 3x weekly, by comparison).

I love their punch line as well, directly aimed at AC.....

Air France will be the only airline operating non-stop flights between Ottawa and Europe.
Nice to see YQB getting a bump in seats as well, from a 224 seater A332 to a 279 seater B789, so it's a decent increase in service to Quebec City as well.

Dominion301 Feb 2, 2023 4:07 PM

At long last YOW rejoins the transatlantic ranks. With crickets still from AC, they should do very well at YOW and an A332 is only marginally larger than the AC 763s that were a staple at YOW. Would not be surprised to see them go daily seasonally in summer 2024.

It should also be noted that this is currently loaded 5x weekly year-round service and not just summer seasonal.

Yup stick it to AC with those words. AC could have easily brought back at least LHR on the 788 by now but are clearly holding out for the XLR. Maybe this will give them the swift kick in the ass they need.

It's about time YYC doesn't get something. They're still well represented though at YYC with KL and with WS to CDG and the WS-AF codeshare.

PD+AF+YOW=👍

Make it happen.

It's interesting to see LH cut service to Canada, while AF is increasing service. (LH was supposed to start service to YOW in 2020 as well, which obviously never happened.)

Will be interesting to see what AC does in terms of retaliation with this new AF route.

I didn't expect them to do anything when AF launched YQB last year, but something tells me AC will be more protective of YOW.....we shall see.

It’s getting a bit late to do anything this coming summer, but they might reinstate their European network from YOW next year.

The US has laws in place that require anyone traveling on a federal government expense account to do so on US airlines. The normally way of getting around that is codeshares. So AC operated flight sold by United would qualify as a US airline.

AC should be pushing for the same. Even if all it means is WS is going to put its code on the AF flight.

That said it is a good addition to YOW. When I was living in the region in the 90s we had two daily 767 to Heathrow. One operated by Air Canada and the second by Canadian. They would leave from the same gate area at about the same time every night. With the population today, I would expect the market should be able to support two European flights a day.

KLM Serves Calgary daily, so that really takes care of Air France. One of their Hubs gets fed.

For Ottawa this is big, No AC, WestJet pulling out of Toronto/Halifax meant there was an opening. The market can handle transatlantic, and this is a opening as AC and WS refocus.

I am just surprised the announcement happened so late.

Well majority of passengers in Canada / connecting, will still pass through Toronto YYZ, Vancouver YVR , Montreal YUL & Calgary YYC ,as these 4 have the most year round flight frequencies to US/International/Domestic destinations✅!! And it will continue to increase eventually.

Air France Paris CDG- Ottawa YOW - CDG 5x weekly flights won’t effect those 4 airports.

Well Calgary YYC is the 4th busiest airport in Canada & they will get more flight frequencies/ new routes every year & something on different airlines, before Ottawa YOW does.

Absolutely YYC is already well served to Europe currently by WestJet, KLM & Air Canada✅!!

YYC just needs some Asia nonstop flights, which is currently their airport’s focus (as since end of 2019 YYC had 0 Asia flights). With WestJet adding YYC - Tokyo NRT, Japan for Spring/ Summer 2023 3x weekly,is a start of it again to Asia, from YYC.

The Japanese love Banff. This should be popular.

The Japanese love PEI too (Anne of Green Gables). Maybe WestJet should offer a Calgary/Charlottetown direct route to coincide with this. :)

WS does serve YYC-YYG seasonally in the summer.

I mean, it's a 6 month advanced notice. It's not that late. And considering how underserved YOW-Europe is at the moment, + all the feed at CDG, it should sell like hot cakes.

I actually think these arrival and departure times are super. With such an early morning arrival you have plenty of opportunities for connections via train or plane. The departure time at CDG is reasonable and connections to/from YOW are even possible. You would think Porter would jump on a codeshare here although their plans are in their infancy.

Many times I have tried to book YEG-YOW-FRA but the connections simply weren't there to make it possible. This could be an option although WS won't be sending me to YOW anytime soon with their YYC hub.

AF364: Departs CDG at 13:10, arrives in YOW at 15:05
AF361: Departs YOW at 17:05, arrives at CDG the following day at 06:15
