Mid Main confirmed as a serious development.

It's serious. The developer owns the block(s) to the south where Continental Club, etc are located. He's a big fan of Austin and wanted to bring a lot of that feel to Houston. I'm not crazy about street abandonment, but this looks like a decent project..

I'd like to see a serious effort made to lure a major grocery store, a Costco and a retailer like Target to that stretch of downtown. Once you get about 5,000 residents, they're going to need the usual retail establishments and food stores.

did you see the plans? they have plenty of lanes for both highways. the 45 lanes would still be elevated above 59, and they would be double decked over i10, so its not like we would be getting rid of some lanes/capacity for this proposal.
any proposal but the one way loop will excite me greatly. 2 others have plans for suberging 59 past Minute Maid park, and the other plan consists of getting rid of 45 on the west all together which would open downtown up to mid town.

oscarinhouston Sep 17, 2013 7:08 PM

My #1 question is "When are they going to bring In -N-Out Burgers to Houston?"

AustinTay Sep 17, 2013 7:13 PM

I don't know how I feel about the idea of getting rid of I45 on the west side. I love driving through there but I also like the idea of connecting Midtown with downtown as well. The only problem I have is that the stretch by St. Joseph hospital is bumpy so it feels like you're on a boat.

Reminds of the BBVA Compass tower in the Galleria. It's a nice design. Looks like the top will light up, can't wait to see more.

Looks like they should release the final rendering soon since it's already shown in the background. The one I really want to see is the one they got proposed for the Museum District.

I've wondered about that, too, but there are lots of other burger joints in town that seem to be filling the bill. Perhaps, if a lot become available on FM 1960 under one of the runways to IAH, In 'n' Out will snap it up.

Also... While reviewing the map, I am trying to differentiate the definition between "Planned" and "Potential". However, the way I am interpreting, it seems projects can be under either heading. Can anyone elaborate?

toxteth o'grady Sep 20, 2013 8:19 PM

I'm not sure if there is any differentiation between "planned" and "potential". As it is, the Marriott Marquis is not "under construction". Yet.

Country Playhouse is getting a new theatre space in the new development. The description I saw previously suggest they will have plenty of space for their operations when this is done.

Progress marches on. :)

From what I understand the building replacing Foley's/Macy's is only a 23-story office tower. Nothing overly special although the renderings are cool.

they cant all be supertalls, heh. "Only" a 23 story tower.. with ground floor retail! lol, downtown desperately needs the retail. it will be interesting watching the plans for Dallas St. unfold. are you sure the renders you saw were of this tower and not one of the many other projects announced for Houston?

Some time ago a rendering was posted of a possible new department store on the lot. It seemed more like a renovation of the Macy's.

That was just an idea though not a concrete rendering.
