For a second, I thought Gale Gordon had opened a store.

And the large mosaic on the Washington Savings building is quite impressive. ...I don't think I have noticed it before.

It could be worse. As I was glancing around the photo, I saw that the poster for "The Pawnbroker" had a word on it starting with "CO" and ending with "US", and my mind filled in "Coronavirus" instead of "Continuous"! Roll on 2021...

The arrow indicates a location marked "MEAT," which is (I hope) the A. Watson firm of the RPPC.

We're moving well into the 20th century here in Glendale, Brnad Blvd. has also been paved.

The links weren't showing when I first looked, I even refreshed...forum weirdness. That street is now Maryland, except the two blocks between Wilson and Harvard which were recently named Artsakh.

Here's an overlay of the Sanborn from Odinthor's post and the aerial from Google Maps:

Now the problem is the Sanborn was using the old street names and numbers. This is now the 100 block of N. Brand(it was the 300 block of S. Brand). The meat market building would have been further south down Brand close to Broadway. The buildings in the photo are all gone, the meat market building with a relatively new building replacing it or it's successor and the two other buildings being replaced in the late 1920's.

As you can see in the seller's description the owners aren't sure this is Los Angeles. . .

. . .but if you look closely at the Haynes Auto Sales Co. sign it appears that Los Angeles is written below the word "auto"

They appear to be jerry-rigged out of axles!

And just where, exactly, are they positioned - over the track or over the pit stop? (the "pit" is mentioned twice in the hand-written description on the photo)

Note that a "big Haynes auto" was present . . . and that there was a "slant of 75 deg." (as the article states), alias "75% Grade" (as the postcard writer would have it).

I was certain the Rosedale Crematorium was still there but the current dome doesn't come close to matching the dome in the 1919 photograph.

Long Beach...Wall of Death


At first I wondered if this was, indeed, Long Beach California. (there's one in N.Y. as well) I compared the pier in this photo with the Long Beach pier from around the same time periods and it's a match.

But I looked through old timey photographs of the Long Beach amusement area and wasn't able to find a single one that showed the 'Wall of Death'. ...so there's that.





Let's take a closer look.

In the mystery photo (at top) you can see the back of a facade (for lack of a better word) at the upper edge of the track. There's no nearby 'facade' that's tall enough in the Long Beach photo.


It's still a mystery.

We have seen 'Dad' Bailey's small newspaper stand on NLA but I don't believe we have seen this larger 'walk-in' Dad Bailey's newstand.

Due to someone not paying the insurance in time. A fire took his business and it was then that he found out someone forgot to pay the insurance. Old enough to retire, but without much money he opened up this newsstand. It thrived and got bigger and he worked there for many years, he lived until he was ninety years old. I see a sign that says "Dad" Bailey sold sandwiches. I think I would have passed on a room temperature egg salad or tuna fish. Rule number 1--never buy a sandwich at a newstand. Doughnuts, maybe. In the back of the shop is a Delaware Punch sign. I know about Hawaiian Punch. What is Delaware Punch? I wonder if Dad would let you peruse the magazines without buying them? Some newstands got annoyed with that. You can understand why. Free riders putting folds and tears in the merchandise. Not good. Especially not for the girlie magazines. After 5 minutes dad would probably say "are you going to buy that?"
