Nice BIG photos. Thanks for posting.

Since it's public land and there's public funds involved to an extent, there should be a commercial archaeology team on hand to document any potential findings/artifacts.

Is there a timeline for when they close down Cornell?

What changes will this bring to the surrounding neighborhood?

All the new construction going on there now that we've talked about. There's been a bunch of articles about it too and how that's going on and the residents are doing things to displaced.

Especially in South Shore

no concerns about gentrification? That's what these residents are concerned about. I think its good tho, lots of people like obama and i think it can make jackson park a tourist destination.

They've also started big time on all the roadwork. Hayes Drive is completely ripped out in certain sections. They have laid the roadbed to add a 3rd lane to LSD southbound, and they are starting to deconstruct the retaining walls and bridge abutments to widen those bridges for the 3rd lane as well.

The Park District has also fully restored the comfort station near MSI's Omnimax, with all the stonework repointed, new faux-slate roof, restored windows, and I'm sure the interior is now updated and fully ADA-accessible. Looks like they are just about finished. Hopefully they cut back the trees so the roof doesn't get crushed again by a falling branch.

Good stuff ardecila. Thanks.

I wish this thread saw more of this. Such an important project for the city.

thegoatman Jun 29, 2022 6:49 PM

So we're just gonna ignore that they're adding another lane of traffic on LSD? I thought this project was taking roads out of parks

Chi-Sky21 Jun 29, 2022 6:55 PM

It is taking a 6 lane road out of the park, but you need to add some capacity to LSD and Stony. A win overall in my book. Always thought Cornell dr and Stony so close was stupid.

Busy Bee Jun 29, 2022 6:55 PM

Yes, we're just going to ignore it. It changes very little the current relationship between the park and the drive. Move on.
