Disappointing still that they couldnt stick to the original 1200 ft plan with 80 stories. It would have been clearly the tallest tower west of Chicago

Great tower.

SF is a very glitzy and glamorous city for skyscrapers.

I look forward to seeing this tower built. San Fran is by far the nicest city on the west coast and she deserves a new crown jewel.

Both San Francisco and LA are going to have new tallests under construction at the same time. Crazy times in California!

US has a lot of supertalls going up or soon to be. Crazy times for the U.S. in the number department :)

It looks like the crown has been refined, at least according to the new renderings on Cesar Pelli's site:

Here's the crown as it currently is rendered on Pelli's website:

And here's an older render:

There is a subtle difference in the grid, and it looks like glass will rise three floors higher before the mesh skin kicks in.
There is also a refinement of the mesh skin inside the slots--good eye, 1977!

Interesting juxtaposition: they've finished the edges around the slits with vertical fins while removing the horizontal fins from the very top, leaving that part more unfinished. And the slit now starts at one of the major horizontal fins. These changes make the slits look much more integrated. They gave me a kind of slapped-on feeling before.

fflint Oct 5, 2013 6:58 AM

^I think the whole crown looks better-integrated with the tower--here's the big picture:

I like it, its subtle but good. Im hoping the inverted mesh panels in the center create a distinct feature in real life.

Very nice catch. It's a small change, but I think it does look better.

It makes the crown look shorter, and hence the actual building look taller and more substantial (even if it's still the same under the skin).

slock Oct 5, 2013 9:24 PM

Putting this together:

- The mesh of the crown is now 6 floors-worth instead of 9
- The slit in the crown extends the equivalent of 8 floors instead of 11

It appears we have found our 3 mystery floors.

And the 30'+ that will make it taller than LA? :)

Seems like every news article I read about this tower report it as the tallest building on the west coast.

That will be interesting. The crown looks nice.

If they were exactly 10 feet tall each they would be tied. Anyone know how tall each floor would be?

I had read previously that the floors will be 15 feet; taking the roof height of 920' and dividing it by 60 comes to 15.34, so that seems plausible.

LA's Wilshire Grand Tower's roof will be 934', crown 1,001', and its stick like spire will bring the architectural height to 1,100'.

I wish we could extend our crown by 35' or find a way to incorporate an attractive surprise last minute spire, as was done on NYC's Chrysler Building!
