mystery location This Photograph, currently on eBay, is labeled Hollywood - Sept. 1949. "Original Black White Snapshot Photo--Hollywood CALIFORNIA 1949 Indian Curio Shop." https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/bPieQB.jpg eBay My only guess, as to the exact location, is. . .umm. . .where N. Rossmore turns in to Vine Street. ....Otherwise, I don't think this is Hollywood at all. I don't recognize the large building (hotel) on the left. the reverse https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/AKcq6k.jpg . |
.
I don't recall if we have seen one of these U.S.O. cards on NLA. This is no doubt the Figueroa Hotel https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/zA5Av5.jpg eBay Take a look at all the activities! https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/V5DaYc.jpg Plastics..... . .as in plastic explosives? I'm kidding . |
I don't recall seeing this 1937 photo before:
The Players Club and the Chateau Marmont. The Players (lettering reversed) looks like it has parking up the hill somewhere, I can't imagine. (Roxbury Rd. street sign at right.) http://hollywoodhistoricphotos.com/images/chatm37.jpgHollywoodHistoricPhotos.com/index.php The billboard appears to be showcasing Victor Vincent (?) in the Playroom. |

This is still the Depression era and people had very little money. When WW II happened, people had money but few places to spend it. In the late 1940s you had to wait hours to get a table in a restaurant. The boom-time came in the 1950s. |

Currently on eBay Two photographs of 1515 Blake Ave. Los Angeles - California https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/8pruuE.jpg eBay https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/9MI4lB.jpg eBay I believe this quaint little abode, and the one next door, might still be standing but it's a bit difficult to tell for sure..... Check it out at GSV . |

I don't believe NLA has seen the Cafe Martan before:
https://i.postimg.cc/k4Ww8VN2/214-W1st-Her-2-17-12.jpg LA Herald, 2/17/1912 https://i.postimg.cc/fRbHFRsP/214-W1st001.jpg odinthor collection It was soon replaced by: https://i.postimg.cc/T1997Z4G/214-W1st-Her-7-17-13.jpg LA Herald, 7/17/1913 which endured for several years; but then, its successor establishment had an adventure characteristic of the era: https://i.postimg.cc/9FLbGH9Y/214-W1st-LAT-11-7-20.jpg LA Times, 11/7/1920 Time brings changes; the Wheel of Fortune at length brought a perhaps unexpected successor in the form of a temporary office for the Chief of Police: https://i.postimg.cc/YCj3RDfK/214-W1st-LAT-6-24-30.jpg LA Times, 6/24/1930 . . . while the site 214 W. 1st would in due course be covered by the new building of the Los Angeles Times. |

:previous: Interesting post, odinthor.... So was the Cafe Martan in the Nadeau Hotel? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/gAumMf.jpg originally posted by odinthor Here's another eBay slide of Hollywood Blvd. [1965] https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/Cnjgdy.jpg eBay I was surprise to see the marquee for the Haunted House as early as 1965.... Was it there in 1965? Yes, yes it was. (I looked it up) EDIT: The seller has the slide dated 1963....I could have sworn it said 1965. As a reminder: You can see the Haunted House marquee lights in this video from 1967. [at 1:16] But wait. . . the photographer wasn't finished. Here's a second slide from the same spot. (but slightly to the right) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/HEWSos.jpg eBay This slide has 11 bids! (actually both slides have 11 bids) ...I wonder if it's because of the cars - - - > ....like the mustang and the odd cream colored car behind it. . |

Yep, e_r, the site was along the 1st St. side of the Hotel Nadeau. Fortunately, an image from LAPL shows it (I added the arrow): https://i.postimg.cc/6Q7TMgQZ/Nadeau-LAPL-Arrow.jpg LAPL Amazingly, the view is unchanged today: https://i.postimg.cc/hvZHZyvJ/LATimes.jpg gsv "Unchanged" in that there are still a corner, two streets, and a sidewalk! Undoubtedly the doors to the left in the below detail led directly into the Nadeau's main lobby, for the convenience of its guests: https://i.postimg.cc/NjC57BQY/Cafe-Martan-Door.jpg detail from earlier image from odinthor collection Between being a cafe and being the temporary headquarters for the Police Chief, the location served as . . . https://i.postimg.cc/cC1Sbtcz/214-W1st-Her-11-9-21.jpg LA Herald, 11/9/1921 |

https://i.imgur.com/psMJm1L.jpg I removed the watermarks from my personal copy, but kept them visible for the forum, out of respect for the eBay seller. If anyone wants the version with the watermark removed, just ask and I'll PM it to you. :) |

Hey!
Unsure if this has been posted here before but here's a cool drive-in from the 1950s known as "The Track". Anyone who can guess why? ;) https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EZmWb0KV...g&name=900x900 (@InterurbanE, Twitter) https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EZmWVt9V...g&name=900x900 I wonder where this was located? And for how long was it in business? |

Starlet, and former Miss Pasadena, Jo Morrow holds an egg (Huh?) as she enters Superior Court to sign a contract with weight restrictions. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/bjLvDj.jpg eBay https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/och7ja.jpg sidenote: Today is National Egg Day. (June 3rd) . |

i could use some help reading the hand-written annotations on this aerial of United Artists Studio in Hollywood. (note the gas-o-meter at extreme left) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/924/1tVNfb.jpg I can't definitely read "Gym" & I'm impressed by how large it is. I wonder if Douglas Fairbanks had some input on the gym's size do to his noted physicality. I see that the 'cutting rooms' are along one the side of the gym but I can't make out what is on the other side. I can read "Pickford Bungalow" but I can't make out what is written on each side of it. I see that "Administration" and "Publicity" is in the large building behind her bungalow. Asking price: $100.00 ....Link Quote:
We pretty much covered "The Track" in the early years of the thread but it's always good to see it again. :) Thanks for your post. . |
