Lazy, I agree. But it's still a good amount of density and lots of added residents for the south side of downtown right along the rail line, so I'll take it! :)

“We’ll gauge the market in a few months and decide at that time,” he says.

Personally I kind of like them, nothing ground breaking but not bad. The developer is a business, and business' sole purpose is to make a much money as possible and redesigning the buildings every time they build a new one would really cut into their profit. So they are not being lazy they're just maximizing profit.

I don't like them either. I think they would look better if the non-glass part of the facade was painted white. They currently look a little gray. Hard to tell from photos if they're even painted.

Does anyone know which hotel project downtown was the one the Chronicle tagged as "cancelled"?

And now it turns out plans for that third unnamed hotel on the same block as the Hampton/Homewood are "in the future":

Developers purchase new lot near downtown hotel project

"UPDATE: The hotel developer said Tuesday afternoon the company is unsure how it will develop the lot, despite a statement released to the media Tuesday morning that a hotel would be built on the land.

American Liberty Hospitality’s Nick Massad told the Chronicle the company will hold onto the land and determine what to build based on future market demand. He said it was unlikely the company would develop the property in the next couple of years.

Previous story: Developers have acquired land to possibly build another downtown hotel, amid a flurry of hotel construction near the George R. Brown Convention Center..."

BisNow is out with an edition all about hotels being built in the area. For those who feared the Alessandra was on a slow boat to oblivion, BisNow offers the following reassurance:

"Michael expects a big push for boutique hotels coming up. The Galleria, Downtown, Energy Corridor, and The Woodlands are saturated, so boutique projects will need to fill the gap. (Midway’s working on it with Hotel Alessandra, scheduled to open late 2016.)"

Among 66 hotel projects mentioned as in the works for the next couple of years is this Holiday Inn scheduled to break ground in the Woodlands:

https://ci3.googleusercontent.com/pr...ds-medium.jpeg

And more evidence of shortages:

"Michael says construction costs are really changing how hospitality projects are built; to make them pencil out, development teams may have to get creative with the structure. (For example, the Hyatt Galleria was planned as cast in place, but is now being built with just a load bearing, metal stud system.) And don’t expect to finalize design and break ground right away; labor shortages are causing backlog."

This may explain why some projects are not moving as fast as some of us who are impatient would like. Figure this is going to be a problem for all types of construction projects.

They can't seriously be talking about Pittsburgh, PA? It had 305,000 and change in 2013, while Katy had 14,000 and change the same year. It would need to have a growth rate of at least 2,100% to exceed where Pittsburgh projected to be in 2014.

Also, Pittsburgh is a self sustaining city, Katy is a dependent suburb in the Houston metro. Take away the city of Houston and let me know how important Katy becomes...or doesn't become.

The Pearland City Council voted three-to-two to approve a zone-change application recently to advance a proposed 48.5-acre mixed-use development that will replace the ill-fated Waterlights District.
Situated at the corner of Spectrum Boulevard and State Highway 288, the 11-block Ivy District development proposed by American Modern Green Development Houston LLC., has been the center of debate for months among city officials.

Mayor Tom Reid voiced support for the development.
“We’ve been talking about making Pearland a destination city. Outside of Shadow Creek Ranch and Pearland Town Center, there’s not really anything to draw people to Pearland,” he said. “The summary of phase one and phase two of this development shows it will have a hotel and 15,000 square-foot conference center. We don’t have any conference centers around Pearland.
“This development will have 120,000 square-feet of restaurants and shopping which are ideal for nightlife. It will also have a 10,000 square-foot community center, which is something we don’t have now. I’d like to talk them into putting in a performing arts center out there, which is ideal for drawing people into the city and presenting them with something we don’t have now,” Reid said. “This development has more items that can draw people to Pearland than any other development I’ve seen in the last several years. I think it is going to create some night life and some things we want to have happen in this city.”

I was searching for a photo or video of the aforementioned Conoco building's lighting (didn't find it) but came across the following very interesting link on downtown Houston in the 1960s. I don't know if there might be a better place to post this link.

In one photo there's new construction that may be One Shell Plaza, which I think was completed in the late 60s (on second thought, it doesn't look like it's in the right place).

Interestingly, the Houston House, where Photolith lived a few years ago, was already there and looked pretty much the same as today.
