That's what REM will offer.

The connection to Dorval station would help with self-transfers from Eastern Ontario.

That should be the answer to a jeopardy question.

What do Fort Mac, Grande Prairie and Phoenix have in common ? What are destinations served by AC only from YYC.....;)

On a serious note, quite a few Air Canada US and sun routes are ending early to mid January. Some of them resume in mid february, most don't. Not a good sign. Most of these routes should have been operating for all of the winter season.

YVR-SJD
YVR-PHX
YVR-PDX
YYZ-PBI
YYZ-ZIH
YYZ-BDA
YYZ-CUR
YUL-SNU
YUL-SJO
YUL-AZS
YUL-NAS
YUL-PLS
YUL-MBJ

I was mostly talking about international destinations. They've also previously only served Lethbridge and Medicine Hat from YYC as well.

Any thoughts on how Covid will impact airport development? I'm thinking of the ambitious plans that YUL had or Pearson's plan for a large rail hub.

Or heck even YOW’s more modest plans including the terminal retail renos and the planned hotel attached to the terminal. The O-Train extension is past the point of no return, so that’ll still go ahead.

I don’t doubt the YYZ transit hub as it can still be a major transfer point for GTA west transit. Even if YYZ only averages say 20 million pax a year over the next few years.

hollywoodcory Jan 7, 2021 12:34 AM

WestJet is also dropping a bunch of US/Intl routes as of next week too:

YVR-CUN/PVR/SJD/LAX/PHX/PSP.
YEG-CUN/PVR/PHX

No routes have been dropped from YYZ or YYC yet but a few were reduced.

I would volunteer to be part of the first flight if WestJet would accept that. It’s good news for Westjet and Boeing. But Boeing has a lot of work to do to restore its reputation.

I am frankly surprsied there's as many flights as there are right now, and that's saying a lot! I mean, people are barely leaving the house let alone the city or country for a vacation somewhere. And there's so many restrictions and the testing and everything, it has made the idea of travel way too much trouble for most people. And business people are barely flying (esp. compared to before). Things will of course get back to normal once the vaccine is out etc., but right now I'm frankly shocked there's even the selection of destinations there are.

I mean, travel is like a point of shame now. Look at all the politician scandals with travel, it's shame on the level as if they killed someone. Don't get me wrong, I am not one of those calling for blood or anything, but it's just interesting that travel is now a dirty word, it's like people automatically assume you are careless or some anti-masker if you go away somewhere

As of January 11th there's going to be a big drop in service...there always is, but this year it'll be way more noticeable. YHZ drops to 6 destinations, YOW 4 for example.

WS slashing its schedule and reducing its workforce, specifically blaming the federal government.

Edit: Based on what's listed in the release, this leaves the following skeleton international schedule:

YYC-PSP/PHX/LAX/HNL/OGG/CUN/PVR/SJD/LIR
YYZ-MCO/FLL/RSW/MBJ/KIN/CUN/LIR/POP/PUJ
YVR-HNL/OGG/KOA

I suspect other routes (like YYC-HNL) will also be dropped too. Also curious if they're still going to be flying the 787 to Mexico.

Tomorrow both AC & WS are flying a 789 on YYC-CUN. A total of 618 seats.

The federal gov't needs to stop dithering around and reach a meaningful aid package for Canada's airlines. It is disgraceful they have handed out CEWS aid to foreign, state-run airlines that have already recived aid from their own government:

A dozen foreign airlines, including three Chinese state-owned carriers, have taken advantage of Canada’s wage subsidy program, even though many have received generous bailout packages from their own governments.

In a review of a Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) database, The Globe and Mail found 12 foreign airlines have received money through the program intended to help Canadian companies and their employee...

Air Canada is virtually empty in both directions. I'm assuming the route only got upped to a 789 so the aircraft doesn't sit in YYC between OGG runs. WS has like 50-60 people going south and is about 85% full northbound.

Eastern Airlines is launching a MIA-GEO-YYZ flight, twice weekly, as of Feb 12. (GEO is Georgetown, Guyana, in South America)

Crazy routing. MIA-YYZ is on sale (300% route detour), and so is GEO-YYZ. A bit of competition for Caribbean Airlines on the latter.

To my knowledge, this is the first time a US carrier is serving an intermediate point between a US to Canada route.

https://goeasternair.com/

On its own, this route seems crazy, but it is important to understand that Eastern is after the O&D between GEO-YYZ and GEO-MIA here. The MIA tag on the GEO-YYZ service is a legal requirement, as US airlines aren't allowed to sell seats between Canada and a third country without continuing service to the US. Eastern has been expanding quite a bit in South America lately. They've been expanding their presence at GEO, and will now add YYZ to the list. Will they succeed? I don't know. Fares are trash for their first week of operations. Can't see them making money on a 6 hour + flight with those kind of fares.

Just for clarity the CEWS subsidy is tired to how much the company paid in salaries in Canada to people living and working in Canada during the previous month.

These subsidies are most likely associated with airport or back office sales staff working at Canadian airports.

I fully expect this iteration of Eastern Airlines to suffer the same fate as the other incarnations.

Apparently some investors just have money to burn.

As of yesterday, both Sydney NS and Saint John NB are orphaned airports with no commercial traffic whatsoever.

CBC is reporting the feds are shuffling their cabinet tomorrow, and Omar Alghabra is taking over the reins of Transport Canada replacing Marc Garneau.

The fact that no other airlines stepped in to take over the routes says it all really. AC dropped a few cities here in Quebec as well, but some regional carriers stepped up to the plate to continue service.

At least Saint John isn’t too far from YFC or YQM. However, I feel for the folks in Sydney that need to travel for essential/business reasons, as the drive to YHZ is quite long.
