Nice to finally have some good airport news, it hasn't been a good aviation world so far this year with the Iran crash, the Max grounding, Coronavirus etc. And this is definitely a welcome addition for YVR, need more links to that part of the world, we have nothing currently!

Hmmm... interesting ... wonder how Swoop will respond?

Glad that he's facing criminal charges. Hopefully he gets jail time, a permanent criminal record, and has to pay money damages to the airline, to every passenger he's affected, as well as punitive damages. $50,000 at least. He should be banned for life from air travel, airports, and all forms of public transportation.

I doubt swoop will respond. At most they’ll price match or be cheaper like they’ve always done.

Only route swoop and flair compete on is YEG-YXX.

Apologies to whoever was annoyed I talk about this... BUT I'm delighted and surprised to see the campaign has a lot of Irish support. Most of the various Facebook groups and petitions are led by Irish people, and they're probably a solid 20% of the membership of all the various groups. It's still nothing, of course, and you could pull 1,000 people off the sidewalk over there and not find a single one with any idea about this, but I'm still glad to see that minuscule fraction of them present. :D

Not sure why...CMA pulled their flight years ago....it's not even an airport...strip more like.....charter only. Oh well...guess if EnCana, Tourmaline, Shell or ARC are in a pinch they can pay the outrageous "last minute" fairs like they'll probably do. John is 45 min up the road and already has WJ....

Two points:
1) Dawson Creek is a Certified Airport.
2) Central Mountain Air runs scheduled passenger services from Prince George.

Presumably WestJet has studied the market and sees a viable business case for the route, which will be tested once they commence service. It is interesting, like you've said, given that Dawson Creek is located midway between Fort St. John and Grande Prairie, both with scheduled services.

I know it's a "certified airport" - I worked outside of there for 6 years and flew from John every 2 weeks. Yes, of course CMA has flights from PG and from Edmonton...what's your point? I said they don't fly to Dawson anymore. I also flew charter from Dawson alternatively on the EnCana Sun West charter...but if that was full I had to CMA it out of John to YEG. Dawson is a complete and utter sh*thole. This "business" case you speak of....means that WJ has a spare SAAB that's not flying and it might as well run on this route. All Gas facilities construction around Dawson and John is on hold until Shell's Kitimat opens in 5 years.....and at the point the entire area will busy with "BILLIONS" of facility work, but until that time Dawson is a deadzone and any marginal activity from "Site C" dam is flown via John......

Thanks for sharing your local experience. I was clarifying that CMA does have service from Dawson Creek to Prince George, and that the Airport is more than just a "strip" - i.e. it has to be maintained to the standards of a Certified Airport. On the business case, you could be right - I don't work at WestJet but if the route proves to be viable, then more power to them.

We are talking about the same airline that thought YXU-YUL would work out for them.

Wondering if WS is now announcing the summer schedule changes by city instead of one big one. The only changes they've announced today are all YYC based. And none of them are loaded in the GDS yet.

Westjet Link is actually operated by Pacific Coastal Airlines. WestJet has a Capacity Purchase Agreement (CPA) with them, and the planes do not belong to WestJet.

Pacific Coastal makes money flying the passengers for WestJet and supplies the aircraft and crews - while WJ schedules, markets & prices the route, taking a booking fee. The hope for WJ is the PAX are connecting onward from YYC or YVR.

Quote:

A CPA is an agreement by where an airline outsources a portion of its business to another company. Much like wet leasing, but usually over longer terms, this is a model that is fundamental to the regional aviation market in the US. Brands like American Eagle, Delta Connection and United Express fulfill the needs of the regional market, without the risk to the big airlines of running a very different fleet in a very different marketplace.

That's a bonus. The booking fee itself is quite lucrative since it's nearly pure profit.

Yes, and it spreads the risks... but... if the route is unsuccessful (underbooked) Westjet can lose money.

Under the CPA Pacific Coastal's (PCA) seats are 'purchased' by Westjet. So if WJ doesn't fill the plane - they still pay a 'set' fee per seat (or per flight). This agreement is also good for PCA, as it protects them from variations in passenger loads and fuel/ticket prices.

WS is really pushing the YYC hub with feeder flights, since the actual Calgary market is probably not doing great right now with the economy. They are clearly trying to see how well the domestic destinations feed into the international expansion. The fact that they will have four weekly Rome flights, while YVR and SEA have none and even SFO only has 6 per week, and that isn't even on United, it's 3 each on Alitalia and Norwegian. And there will be very little inbound traffic from Rome to YYC, so it's all leisure. Will be interesting to see if it can succeed

Hey, speaking of regional airlines and Capacity Purchase Agreements (CPA).... Air Georgian is in trouble after Air Canada is letting its CPA expire. Air Canada Express is now operated by 3 'regional airlines' with CPAs .. with Jazz Aviation (Chorus) being the largest. Jazz is actually Canada's 3rd largest airline - the Skywest of Canada!

Air Georgian, sub-contractor that flew 1.5 million Air Canada passengers a year, heading toward bankruptcy protection

https://business.financialpost.com/t...tcy-protection

Quote:

Air Georgian operated 63,000 short-haul flights annually under the Air Canada Express banner to destinations in Canada and in the U.S., a little-known cost-cutting practice followed by most large “mainline” airlines.

But Air Canada quietly announced last year it was winding up the “capacity purchase agreement (CPA)” and transferring the work to Jazz Aviation, though the accord was later extended by a few months

And Jazz is headquartered in Halifax.
