GALWAY - Day 2

Only took my mobile with me for part of day 2 because I had to finally charge it all the way. :haha: We were up early for a road trip out around the countryside to the cliffs of Moher.

Set to the song my parents kept singing to me every time they answered a call from me during the trip. :haha: Stuck in my head.

GALWAY - Day 3, Cont.

So, the canals and weirs are beautiful. They offer some breaks from the constantly-roaring river through town. They also make a lovely sort of semi-green walking trail that crosses most of the city.

Set to the band I'm named after lol, the Great Big Sea of my mother's generation.

The rest of our final day in Galway. Spent the afternoon getting drunk and people watching, chatting with a local and a Spaniard. Then went clubbing, had another wonderful night. Left my new friends' place straight to the bus, airport, and home. :D

Set to a song I haven't heard in YEARS that the pub I was sitting at played. :D

Splendid thread, though. It's worth the post.

I've never been to any of these places.

One of my (female) cousins spent a couple of years in Dublin over a decade ago and liked it, but I still was at school and couldn't visit her over there. That's too bad.
Since you've been about weddings out there, she eventually came back here to marry a better off Frenchman anyway.
That's life.

Hey, that being said, Ireland would be bloody rich nowadays. These little bastards turned into a tax heaven, just to be appealiing to corporations and big money.
:hell: That's disgusting, unfair competition. Larger countries like mine could never do the same. Bwaha!

Nice last set!

Shawn Sep 15, 2019 11:07 AM

SignalHillHiker, thank you immensely for this thread. I haven’t been able to visit my cousins in Roscommon in 4 years now, and I have such a Galway and Dublin itch that needs scratching. Your pics helped. I actually have more Galway experience than Dublin - Galway is only an hour’s drive from Roscommon.

If I remember right, you’re also a Boston fan? Do you feel Dublin and Boston have similar atmospheres? I am constantly reminded how similar they feel every time I visit Dublin.

SignalHillHiker Sep 15, 2019 11:33 AM

Yeah, they do feel similar. Dublin is much busier than Boston but they both have that lovely, Irish lack of a facade. There's little if any pretentiousness, etc. And they both have a larger city looming close enough to keep them aware of the world outside but far enough away to have little lived, daily impact. Most of the differences are mainly a result of America's social structure - for example, there are almost no homeless people on the street in Dublin.

St. John's used to feel quite a lot like Dublin too but the latter has changed and we now feel irredeemably provincial in comparison. Very comparable to Galway, though, so we've still got that. :haha:

mousquet Sep 15, 2019 3:30 PM

Idk whether the Irish are always as friendly as legend has it.
They often are great party people when they show up here in France, and I think they like us in general.
But their relation to the English might have always been something else.
That's none of our business anyway.

I'm just envious when thinking of their economy. People say they were stuck in difficulties up to the 1980s or 90s, but watch these figures today.

2018 Ireland's GDP per capita: $78,785 (IMF, ranked 5th)
USA: 62,606 (10th)
Canada: 49,651 (21st)
France: 45,775 (25th)

2017 Ireland's human development index: 0.938 (UN, ranked 4th)
Canada: 0.926 (12th)
USA: 0.924 (13th, though they don't perform so well once inequality taken into account, which is the very problem in the US)
France: 0.901 (24th)

Ahem, there's only a 20-country gap between us and them by every significant economic measure...
I find it simply amazing when they are supposed to have been much poorer than us just 30 years ago.
They've been so freaking fast. I'm actually glad about it, cause they're definitely a good people for real.

Sorry for spoiling the thread by these things, but I think it's worth noting how fine the Irish are doing today.
It's even important.

SignalHillHiker Sep 15, 2019 3:50 PM

Oh it doesn't spoil - I find it fascinating and wouldn't think to look up these sorts of things on my own.

Thanks for the tour! Back in the mid 80's I did a 2 week driving trip around Ireland, and a 3 week driving trip around Wales, Scotland, England. Long time ago!

Curiously, can you still smoke in the pubs in Ireland and Scotland?

I don't think so, but I'm not certain. No one else did, and I went outside. However, you can definitely smoke in any outdoor seating, even when it's right up against the entrance. Restaurants, pubs, airports, etc. all have tables with ashtrays and the like right outside the main doors.

fanatstic tour, I got so immersed. Thanyou so much for doing this- you have a wonderful, beautiful family of friends.

Interesting to see how similar St Johns is to Dublin, they look like the same city almost.

Dublin reminds me alot of a timewarp London in the 90s, messier, clunkier and a lot more fun.
