A quick video interlude. :D I filmed a couple of short drives.
The first in a taxi in Edinburgh... And the second in a van in Galway... |
GALWAY - Day 3
I woke up before the sun and got ready to walk downtown. It's only about an hour from where we were staying. Set to another local cover of a suitable song. There are lovely little suburbs if that's your thing. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3be971ef_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5e584209_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f679931d_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a9f4bc8a_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ebe25d9b_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c7667b5a_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...971e2f98_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...05380e82_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...54d5a7a1_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1d0f9216_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr The Sunday markets were setting up. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...32b4af19_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7735c748_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8b6a2f40_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2dbb2cc4_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8b6b9f8e_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr Grabbed a coffee at the first open cafe with outdoor seating I could find. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...23e0ef2c_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...cf0b55a4_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr After lounging there for a while, I decided to walk the canal and explore the West End near Claddagh, next post. :D I was just killing time before the pubs opened at 12:30 - late, but it was Sunday, after all lol |
GALWAY - Day 3, Cont.
So, the canals and weirs are beautiful. They offer some breaks from the constantly-roaring river through town. They also make a lovely sort of semi-green walking trail that crosses most of the city. Set to the band I'm named after lol, the Great Big Sea of my mother's generation. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6eb91a36_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f4eb62b7_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...513285ff_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...88b9fe3e_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr The West End of Galway is as solemn and flat as Edinburgh. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...aeeaca7d_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ce0c8d66_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0ba80e6f_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...90af2b65_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7279a146_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...4628ea10_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...15433f11_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1c8d6b94_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr But it gets colourful again along the main streets. :D https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0c2ea51d_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...63821e5e_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c326ddeb_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3ed580a9_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr Like St. John's, the sidewalks in Galway randomly end for streetfront houses lol https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8f12d87d_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b920ff4d_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...87075966_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2aa08785_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e3eebfb7_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e5c59857_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1b317e5c_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...54ebdbdf_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e4048391_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...92692cdb_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c7cd28e0_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...33443c72_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ff8930b0_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e3d793aa_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c48c2746_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...dd936758_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr By the time I crossed back over the river to the Latin Quarter in the core, the pubs were open. :D https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...06a48803_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...bcba82ac_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6925ffae_b.jpgGalway Day 3 by R C, on Flickr I was supposed to go to a castle to meet our hosts' Canadian friends, but Joanne went instead. :D I stayed in the center drinking, people watching, and chatting with an Irishman and a Spaniard, and having fun until I had to bus it back to charge my phone/vape. :haha: Then straight back again... next post. :D |
Awesome work mate!

Great stuff, glad you all had a good time and didn't drink too much. ;) Ironically I was touring NL just last week.

The West End of Galway looks like classic Ireland!

Last post. :D
The rest of our final day in Galway. Spent the afternoon getting drunk and people watching, chatting with a local and a Spaniard. Then went clubbing, had another wonderful night. Left my new friends' place straight to the bus, airport, and home. :D Set to a song I haven't heard in YEARS that the pub I was sitting at played. :D https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ee4f90f9_b.jpgHome From Galway by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b13c9537_b.jpgHome From Galway by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...4ff04625_b.jpgHome From Galway by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...210d505f_b.jpgHome From Galway by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...70fc4790_b.jpgHome From Galway by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3275ec80_b.jpgHome From Galway by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3ac1f39d_b.jpgHome From Galway by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b0ee4b75_b.jpgHome From Galway by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...877f0a4d_b.jpgHome From Galway by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a406034b_b.jpgHome From Galway by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...df09dd2b_b.jpgHome From Galway by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6a9f9601_b.jpgHome From Galway by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3d30be0c_b.jpgHome From Galway by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fd188f34_b.jpgHome From Galway by R C, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d370aa8d_b.jpgHome From Galway by R C, on Flickr Then, home sweet home. Splendid thread, though. It's worth the post. I've never been to any of these places. One of my (female) cousins spent a couple of years in Dublin over a decade ago and liked it, but I still was at school and couldn't visit her over there. That's too bad. Since you've been about weddings out there, she eventually came back here to marry a better off Frenchman anyway. That's life. Hey, that being said, Ireland would be bloody rich nowadays. These little bastards turned into a tax heaven, just to be appealiing to corporations and big money. :hell: That's disgusting, unfair competition. Larger countries like mine could never do the same. Bwaha! |

SignalHillHiker, thank you immensely for this thread. I haven’t been able to visit my cousins in Roscommon in 4 years now, and I have such a Galway and Dublin itch that needs scratching. Your pics helped. I actually have more Galway experience than Dublin - Galway is only an hour’s drive from Roscommon.
If I remember right, you’re also a Boston fan? Do you feel Dublin and Boston have similar atmospheres? I am constantly reminded how similar they feel every time I visit Dublin. |
Yeah, they do feel similar. Dublin is much busier than Boston but they both have that lovely, Irish lack of a facade. There's little if any pretentiousness, etc. And they both have a larger city looming close enough to keep them aware of the world outside but far enough away to have little lived, daily impact. Most of the differences are mainly a result of America's social structure - for example, there are almost no homeless people on the street in Dublin.
St. John's used to feel quite a lot like Dublin too but the latter has changed and we now feel irredeemably provincial in comparison. Very comparable to Galway, though, so we've still got that. :haha: |
Idk whether the Irish are always as friendly as legend has it.
They often are great party people when they show up here in France, and I think they like us in general. But their relation to the English might have always been something else. That's none of our business anyway. I'm just envious when thinking of their economy. People say they were stuck in difficulties up to the 1980s or 90s, but watch these figures today. 2018 Ireland's GDP per capita: $78,785 (IMF, ranked 5th) USA: 62,606 (10th) Canada: 49,651 (21st) France: 45,775 (25th) 2017 Ireland's human development index: 0.938 (UN, ranked 4th) Canada: 0.926 (12th) USA: 0.924 (13th, though they don't perform so well once inequality taken into account, which is the very problem in the US) France: 0.901 (24th) Ahem, there's only a 20-country gap between us and them by every significant economic measure... I find it simply amazing when they are supposed to have been much poorer than us just 30 years ago. They've been so freaking fast. I'm actually glad about it, cause they're definitely a good people for real. Sorry for spoiling the thread by these things, but I think it's worth noting how fine the Irish are doing today. It's even important. |
Oh it doesn't spoil - I find it fascinating and wouldn't think to look up these sorts of things on my own.
|
Thanks for the tour! Back in the mid 80's I did a 2 week driving trip around Ireland, and a 3 week driving trip around Wales, Scotland, England. Long time ago!
Curiously, can you still smoke in the pubs in Ireland and Scotland? |

fanatstic tour, I got so immersed. Thanyou so much for doing this- you have a wonderful, beautiful family of friends.
Interesting to see how similar St Johns is to Dublin, they look like the same city almost. Dublin reminds me alot of a timewarp London in the 90s, messier, clunkier and a lot more fun. |

AND I've screencapped it and sent it to a half dozen people. ;-) Cheers! Thanks for the compliments haha |
