I'm sure there was plenty of delaying, politicking, and bribing going on back then.

No doubt. There's likely a fascinating history about the shadowy underside of decision-making in the city over the past decades.

^There's a great book out there (Can't remember the title) written years ago that exposed the relationship between the City and construction firms/ organised crime. I've been trying to get my hands on it for years but it's eluded me. Perhaps someone here will know the title.

^That's the one.

Welp, I just ordered a copy from Amazaon. Can't wait to dive into it. It was published in 1979, wish there was another newer edition including the last 30 years.

Dr Awesomesauce Jan 26, 2015 12:20 PM

^Fear not. Little has changed over the last 35 years.

Downtown Hamilton, 1946.

WOW! What a nice full looking downtown!

Dr Awesomesauce Jan 26, 2015 11:44 PM

^Nice one!

The industrial complex on the block bounded by Catharine, KW, John and Rebecca is pretty serious - I'm assuming it was one single company.

Really like the urban density on James between King and Main with the old Robinson's, Royal Bank Building, etc.

CaptainKirk Jan 27, 2015 2:41 PM

Wow! Fantastic picture!

Love the density along King William/Wilson along the current day sea of asphalt.

Also love the old theatres that back onto King Willima, the old courthouse on Main and John, and the old terminal building.

Interesting how the new building there replicates the same brick and window design.

I hope the existing "Leon Furs" sign doesn't go anywhere.

The first floor tenant of Leon's Furs, STORE, removed the sign across the front of the storefront but they use the same font and the yellow/red colour scheme in their branding so I'm sure they see the value of the hanging sign.

Like the Pagoda Chop-Suey House sign, the Leon Furs sign would have to be repaired or restored while it's hanging. If taken down for repair it wouldn't be allowed back up because it would have to conform to current sign by-laws.

Somewhere along the line, that building lost its cornice, etc. It was a real beauty.

If I recall correctly, there was a pretty bad fire at some point in it's lifetime that necessitated removing the roof line from the building. I believe it spent the rest of it's life after that mostly abandoned.
