Haha "Why isn't the TCH twinned all through BC yet?" "BC is so slow on twinning this highway" etc.

And yet other countries seem to have overcome the construction challenges associated with building “real” highways through the mountains long ago (I-70, I-80, I-90 etc.).
Just hasn’t been a priority for Canada (much to my frustration) ;).
BTW - The Feds should be funding 75% of TCH system upgrades IMO.

Marshal Aug 10, 2021 8:47 AM

It would be good to get more Fed funding for long inter-provincial routes.

I wish we could stop comparing our situation to places with shorter routes between significantly larger population/economic centres: esp., US and Europe.

dmuzika Aug 16, 2021 6:43 AM

This is a little off topic, but in light of the wildfire situation, is it possible (or recommended) to drive through the Interior? Basically traveling from Alberta to the Lower Mainland. I just noticed the Coquhalla is closed between Merritt and Hope and there are other fires near Sicamous and Three Valley.

Marshal Aug 16, 2021 8:05 AM

The interior is under two crises: Covid and wildfire. So, it depends upon how important your trip is, and if there is a safe route.

Remember, during a crisis like this there is a strain on all aspects of life. It's not just about evacuees and firefighters: every system is strained. For example, hotels are straining, not just to accommodate evacuees, but all sorts of officials who are needed for management and logistics. The fuel system is strained. The hospital system, the police, transport, etc. are all strained. YOU DON'T WANT TO GET INTO A POSITION WHERE YOU UNNECESSARILY ADD TO THAT LOAD.

So, check your odds and priorities before you decide.

(Here is how I look at it: I mountain bike, but during Covid and the strain on our paramedics, ambulances, and hospitals, I make a serious effort to make sure I don't end up in an Emerg. because of my 'sport.' I stay off difficult/risky trails, and ride conservatively and with caution.)

Highway 1 through the Fraser canyon is also closed due to a rock slide. Only road to the coast open is Highway 3.

You can turn off onto Hwy 99 from Hwy 1 and get to Vancouver via Whistler.

Fall closure schedule for Kicking Horse Phase 4 has been finalized.

Highlights:

Quote:

The traffic management strategy is designed to minimize and mitigate traffic disruptions while allowing the work to proceed safely and on schedule:

Labour Day weekend: the canyon will be fully open day and night.

Until Sept. 15: daytime travel through the canyon will continue to be uninterrupted with rare exceptions. Evening half-hour stoppages due to single-lane alternating traffic and overnight closures will continue. During any overnight closures, Trans-Canada Highway traffic will be diverted to the alternative route of highways 93 and 95 through Radium Hot Springs.

Sept. 15: daytime stoppages of up to half an hour due to single-lane

Evening half-hour stoppages due to single-lane alternating traffic and overnight closures will continue. During any overnight closures, Trans-Canada Highway traffic will be diverted to the alternative route of highways 93 and 95 through Radium Hot Springs.

Sept. 15: daytime stoppages of up to half an hour due to single-lane alternating traffic will be added between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Sept. 20 (noon) to Dec. 1 (6 a.m.): Kicking Horse Canyon Constructors will implement a multi-day, 24-hour, extended closure of the Trans-Canada Highway. Through traffic on Highway 1 between Golden to Castle Junction will be routed via highways 93 and 95, which will add up to 1.5 hours of travel time. Roadside signage will provide advance notification of the closure. Alternative routes will have signage.

============================

Exceptions to extended road closures:

Sept. 25-26: the multi-day 24-hour closure is suspended, but shorter-duration stoppages and overnight closures may apply.

Thanksgiving holiday long weekend: the highway will be fully open day and night.

A limited-access pass system established to allow local commuters and school buses to be escorted through the construction zone during two brief windows daily is now at or very near capacity. Information on the pass system is posted on the project website.

I’ve been wondering:
Why does Crowsnest Highway have 4 lanes in the middle of Manning Park? Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice, but the location seems random to me.

Above is the western limit of the 4 lanes, separate from those between Hope and west entrance to Manning Park.

I'm just speculating, but it could be that the terrain in that part of the park was easier to build in, as compared to the steeper terrain to the east and west. It also gives a nice long stretch for passing to help reduce lines that may have formed behind slower vehicles in the narrower hill sections.

I've often wondered that as well. I've taken that highway a hundred times to get between Castlegar and Vancouver.

SO what does everyone think abou the current state of LML and southern interior highways?

I think from best condition to worst we're looking at:

1. Highway3
2. Highway99
3. Highway 1
4. Highway 5/8

I don't see how highway 5 and 8 are open until 2022/2023

Yes, when a road is described as "Nicola River swallows Highway 8 west of Merritt" it may be a while before it is rebuilt!

It has been like that for a long time, since the early 80s, at least. That was before the Coquihalla was built and it handled more traffic. The stretches between the Tulameen and the Similkameen Rivers, Skagit Bluffs and west up to Rhodedendron Flats have difficult terrain. The last stretch to be improved was around Whipsaw Creek and before that from the Coquihalla to Hope Slide (1986). The four-laning from Sunshine Valley to the Manning Park entrance was done in the early 80s I believe. I can remember the highway twisting around boulders at the Hope Slide and graphiti on the rocks in the late 1970s.

The 4 lane stretches come in handy with other road closures occurring.

DoubleK Jan 19, 2022 9:03 PM

It is remarkable they have been able to open both routes this week.

Now the real engineering and design can begin.

Have they floated the idea of reinstating the toll on the Coq? Gotta pay for this some how.

jimmyboy95 Jan 22, 2022 1:55 AM

Looks like the province spent about $1 million to install not one but TWO new traffic signals in Princeton, a town that previously had zero. One is obviously at the 5A and 3 intersection, and the other will be just north of there, where 5A turns off the main street to bypass the downtown.

Improvements are coming to the intersection of 97 and 3A in Kaleden too. Not sure about the details at this time, but I'm guessing a protected T intersection. Probably not a signal and definitely not a roundabout unless they dropped 97 to a 50kph zone through there. That one is sure a sketchy intersection!

Awesome news about the Coquihalla and Lytton to Spences Bridge. Hopefully the Jackass Mountain stretch is open soon too, then Hwy 1 will be fully passable.

Disaster funding is a bit different than your usual funding issues. Rainy day funds and federal support will cover most of the costs of the repairs. The political and monetary cost to put tolls back in (probably automated license plate scanners instead of toll booths) might not be worth it.

Kelowna's growth requires a second Okanagan Lake bridge

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/kelo...an-lake-bridge

So, to March what is seen in the rest of the developed world this is what a 10 to 15 year highway / transportation plan should look like for Kelowna and the surrounding area:

Oh boy. Hippies are at full force in the comments. Kelowna will always be sprawling. That's why people move there, to live in a house. Few residential towers in Downtown will account for less that a percent of the total population.

I'll admit I'm eyerolling about the "old growth forest" comments but I also don't think a freeway so close to Kelowna will ever make sense. The geography and the growth patterns of the area don't really jive with the concept at all. A more substantial bypass with connections to major centers could make sense, and by bypass I mean a significant bypass along the west side of Okanagan Lake from Vernon to Penticton. It wouldn't be right on the shore either, as I'm imagining something much further up the mountains to really keep it separate from everything there today.

There was studies done in the late 90s on a second crossing and it's not too surprising that even back then they didn't have an appetite for it.

Beware of the TCH WEST of Golden. They are blasting by Quartz Creek Staging Area, starting at 7pm. I got caught there on Weds night and had to wait 90 minutes to start moving, versus the advertised 30 minutes.
