Opa-Locka, FL City Hall looks like a mosque!

wrab Jan 27, 2010 4:24 PM

Opa-Locka FL has one crazy-looking city hall! Crazy name, too. Apparently, Opa-locka has the largest collection of Moorish Revival architecture in the Western hemisphere:

The city was developed by Glenn Curtiss and was based on the Arabian Nights theme, with streets that have names like Sabur Lane, Sultan Avenue, Ali Baba Avenue, and Sesame Street. Opa-locka has the largest collection of Moorish Revival architecture in the Western hemisphere...........Amelia Earhart launched her historic trip around the world from Miami Municipal Airport, just south of Opa-locka.[6] The famous German dirigible Graf Zeppelin visited the NAS Miami, which later became Opa-locka Airport, as a regular stop on its Germany-Brazil-United States-Germany scheduled route.....

Read up on some Buffalo history. Maybe not the "greatest in the world", but Buffalo was without question one of the most prominent cities in the US in the first half of last century. It is easily one of our most important cities historically.

Its the Federal Courthouse. A giant glass box with no shade in a desert, brilliant job asshole. Not only that, the roof is open to dust storms, the mister system at one point was designed in such a way that it was carrying legionnaires disease, its a super block that cuts off Downtown from the State Capitol, just a total monstrosity.

Please don't take this as a knock on San Jose either, Ive never been there, Im sure its nice. In fact I feel a little more connected to SJ too knowing they have to suffer with a prominent civic building designed by one of the worst 'starchitects' out there.

That isnt that flattering of a photo of the Federal Courthouse, but reading up on the building, the idea of it is actually really impressive and a worthwhile attempt. Of course I cant say how well it has worked in the end, but this reminds me of a building in Germany I believe that is designed to basically have its own internal microclimate in order to better control the temperatures of the building in a more passive way, and the project in Germany was very successful, so I could see why Meier would want to try it here.

Plus there is also a theory that goes along with this building, that it is creating a visual transparency with the law...looking at photos of the building, I can definitely see that idea in it.

Also, I am really loving the castle looking city halls, some of them look funny, but if you are gonna be a small city might as well have an old outlandish city hall.

Built to reflect the agricultural past of Mississauga, it represents a windmill (clock tower), farmhouse (main taller part), barn (large pentagon), and silo (cylinder)

I really appreciate modern city halls, and Toronto has one of the nicest.

And I think it's great that the original city hall was preserved. I think you can build new without demolishing old.

Nowhereman1280 Oct 27, 2010 3:30 PM

^^^ The situation with the old and new Toronto City halls reminds me of Chicago's City Halls with the modern Daley Center being adjacent to the Classical City Hall.

Pleased to see someone already mentioned Savannah City Hall. I find it to be beautiful in both how ornate and well-crafted it is, but it is still very modest in scale. It was built from 1901 to 1906.

University City MO

(from Architect Magazine):

"Originally known as the Woman's Magazine Building, the tower was built by Edward Gardner Lewis as the headquarters for his Lewis Publishing Co., which produced Woman's Magazine and Woman's Farm Journal.

Architect Herbert C. Chivers designed the tower, which springs from a limestone base and features buff-colored brick walls alternating with large, stacked windows framed by terra cotta ornament. Inside, an impressive marble staircase connects first- and second-floor offices surrounding a central rotunda. To attract attention, Lewis had a large searchlight installed on an elevator that rises out of the domed roof, sweeping it across the fairgrounds of the 1904 World's Fair in nearby Forest Park. It was great promotion, and tours were offered of the building and the adjacent printing plant."

It recently underwent a complete restoration including removing and repairing damaged masonry, re-tiling the roof, and completely replacing the copper on the bell tower. I find this renovation extremely fascinating because the building now looks brand new, its like going back in time and seeing the building as it first looked as a WTB.

During the renovation, you can see the new copper on the top of the bell tower. The whole building has been covered in scaffolding for nearly two years:

Thats an Interesting fact. Baltimore's City Hall is made of the same snow white marble -- dug from a string of canyonlike pits in the Baltimore County area of Cockeysville -- it was also used for such notable buildings as the Capitol in Wahington, and the Washington Monument. Many of the city's well-known white marble steps also came from the quarry.

This building was Ottawa's City Hall from 1958 to 2000, since then it has been offices for the federal government. The international-style tower block was built in 1958 and expanded in 1993 in the postmodernist style by Moshe Safdie. Beautiful if you're into PoMo.
