Just from some planning, but if they ever got this kind of density built over and around the yards, it would be among one of the greatest accomplishments in the City.

You know I've been wondering, as I've been following these East Side Access construction updates from the Sunnyside Yards construction, is the MTA even casually planning for or accounting for the potential locations of deck and foundation locations in the yard if these SY vision proposals ever move into fruition?

This is a good idea on the thinking so far... Quote:
I'm sure everything is being taken into account by the planning team. https://www.nycedc.com/project/sunnyside-yard Quote:

I just hope they unify the street grid, so it would seamlessly connect the neighborhoods, and not just have this weird formless master-planned blob shape.

Friday, March 1, 2019 6:00 PM there is a public meeting/work shop for Sunnyside Yards.

I'm convinced that the public is too dumb to be involved in any planning process, but good luck.

The notion that it could take 50 years or more to complete is absurd. At most, the entire build out should take 20.

Welcome to Union Labor world! Makes me wonder how long rebuilding the BQE would take. By the time its finished, we might have flying cars become the norm. I guarantee you outside of the U.S., this would be built in less than 10 years. |
Blaming this on union labor is, well, nonsense. You can expedite the schedule on a project like this, that has little to nothing to do with whether the human beings working on the project are members of trade unions.

I'm no planner, but wouldn't you want a plan that is written over a 100-year timeframe. Burnham's plan for Chicago comes to mind. This is much smaller than the Chicago lakefront, but we are also talking about a convention center, new park, a deck over 160+ acres. And it is not in Midtown. This is something that should be developed over decades, no?
|
^yeah...
Plans are wonderful. Plans SHOULD come to fruition. Broadcasting that this may take 100 years which is preposterous communicates a discusting lack of confidence in the plan. The Sunnyside Yard buildout should be a 30 year program, and if the city was really serious about providing additional housing and acting like a first world alpha city - a 20 year program. |

AOC and friends came out against any new building construction or development of Sunnyside yards. She is by far the most powerful Queens politician with a deep $$$ election pool. Its probably a wrap folks.
|
AOC has no involvement in Sunnyside Yards. I don't like her either but it's stupid to make her the Boogeyman for everything.
Yes, there are obviously NIMBYs against the rezoning. Welcome to NYC. The same NIMBY whiners fight every single rezoning over the last 50 years. Eventually the rezoning will pass with some stupid giveaways so the politicans can say they got a win for the "community". |
I am a liberal democrat. I have an altruistic worldview that I believe was passed to me in utero and further nurtured in me while being raised as well as a healthy amount of contrarianism that I have acquired with age. I believe in what some call socialism is appropriate in certain areas of society where the free market cannot or will not provide the public good and who's profit motives are misaligned with the interests of the most, in particular health care, schools and transport. That said, I have issues with Rep. O-C in the way she approaches free market RE development and the misguided class warrior claims of gentrification that development might bring. I cannot believe I am about to link this article, but there was a Reason piece just yesterday that sums up the issue of SY. And while I do not agree with their underlying absolutist free market position that the infrastructure investment required for SY redevelopement is not worthy of public subsidy, for another angle's sake it is worth a read.

^Somewhat of a refreshing take from you. Kudos.
That the proposal, slated to sit atop a useless rail yard, "would..displace communities of color..", really takes the cake for one of the dumbest things to come out of her mouth. And that's not an easy feat. |
