The setbacks are subtle, increasing in number as the tower rises. That's what gives it it's "feathered" look. That first setback is also supposed to be one of the windbreaks.

She looks like a concerned Sophia Loren from the movie Houseboat.

True that. Cary Grant, nor any other movie star could afford to live here. Its pretty sad commentary on today's society when the only way a building like this can be built is because of there are enough billionaires to populate it.

General question: I see this building referred to online as the "Steinway Tower," but not on here. What's the official name of this building?

Skyguy_7 Mar 8, 2018 6:42 PM

Did the scope of this project include a gut-rehab of the entire Steinway building, now uncovered?

It's 111 W. 57th St, aka the Steinway Building. It's also referred to as Steinway Tower.

Yes. This isn't being built as a separate tower, but an alteration to an existing building. That's why there are no "new building" permits. The new shaft also rises partially from within the pre-existing structure. It's basically all one building.

we are in the midst of the era we have long been waiting for, when all these midtown supertall towers are high up enough for the public to finally take notice. i would imagine we will be seeing and hearing a lot more news, social media and the like about them from now on. and what a sight it all is. amazing.

Prezrezc Mar 13, 2018 3:01 PM

YIMBY has reported today that this at the official half-way point....heightwise, of course.

I know what you mean. I had kind of lost hope, especially after the recession. It really is amazing to see this happening. Years ago we would get excited over 400 footers. :haha:

It is just so pretty. This is going to be one of the few towers that looks better irl than in renderings.

It's just mind-bending how thin this thing looks, and it's only halfway up.

Yeah, it's always a "wow" factor when I see it.
