Excellent news. I'm looking forward to seeing the A350 at YYZ. I had wondered who would bring the first scheduled one. I had thought it may have been Finnair if they started up the HEL-YYZ route again, or Cathy on the HKG route. But glad nonetheless that Lufthansa are bring theirs.

A333 to A359 is a decent increase in seats as well. 255 to 319, in the case of YUL.

I never saw how close this Air Canada flight was from crashing into taxiing planes last year.

YYZ hasn't had an A350 before this announcement?? They've been at YVR for half a year at least already.

I don't know if that announcement solidifies anything for next summer, the 787s were basically spoken for so by that logic none of the other airports are going to see any new routes with them either.

You guys are onto the slack schedule (as currently presented/loaded) for both the 763 and n789 fleet at WS. Both fleet types could handle an additional round trip 3 or 4 times per week. For the 763, the additional flying could be done with the additional slack because the airplanes are hangar queens.

Westjet doesn't crystallize their summer schedule until December or January. Further, if they toasted those YEG-LGW and YWG-LGW frequencies as part of the Dreamliner route announcement, it would have nationally tainted the presser.

My guesstimate on the 763: the 763s will fly YYZ-LGW and YVR-LGW daily. Additional European routes will be announced at later date, these will be multiple destinations served a few times per week each. YEG and YWG will lose their token summer seasonal flights. In both cases the losses will be attributed to guests choosing the 789 through YYC over the nonstop on the 763.

My guesstimate on the 789: There is a potential for 2-3/wk YYZ-LGW run if the introduction goes well. The aircraft routing would be YYC-LGW-YYZ-LGW-YYC. WS does this aircraft routing currently. The less than daily aspect is required as the 789 fleet couldn't do 3 dailies all the time.

If the 789 delivery gets delayed or if the indoctrination goes badly, the spare 789 could be used for recovery operations and as the maintenance spare.

Thanks Cage for the info. I couldn't figure it out, they have 4 767s in the fleet and only two real routes showing up. I wonder if they will keep YWG and YEG. YWG is a token once a week for sure. WS has to be careful with YEG, as people there are very conscious of the fact that WS wants to funnel everyone through YYC. It's one thing getting one-stop service to new destinations like CDG and DUB, but losing their own non-stop WS service in favour of connecting to the 787 in YYC will have people (especially in this forum!) annoyed.

Is the long term plan to keep the 767s or ditch them?

Do people outside of this forum really care, though? The reality is that unless you are going to Amsterdam, then YEG passengers bound for Europe are going to have to connect somewhere. Going via the US is a pain and most people will only do it to save money. So that leaves you basically with YYZ, YUL, YYC in Canada, or AMS, KEF in Europe. Most people would decide based either on what's fastest or what's cheapest or some combination of the two.

Yup, LH started YVR-MUC May 1st, I was on the flight May 2nd, great ride! More comfy than the Dreamliners, seats are wider as is cabin, fantastic air and big windows like the 787 ...and super-quiet!

I may be wrong, but I heard somewhere that they’re on the books until at least mid to late 2020s.

Only until end of July for YVR, it's not mentioned but I guess it's back to A350 again?

Definitely happy to see the A346 back at YVR, it's such a graceful looking plane.

LeftCoaster Oct 12, 2018 9:48 PM

And just as it loses an A350 YVR gets a new one:
https://www.routesonline.com/news/38...ervice-in-w18/

So for winter 2019 that's now:
- China Airlines daily A359
- Cathay Pacific 3xPW A359
- Hong Kong Airlines daily A359

And add in Lufthansa potentially from August 19 on and that's a lot of 359s. I'd also expect Cathay to shift one of their 777s to a 350-1000 when they have a few more of them.

If I'm travelling with my wife + kids it means I have to lug around a big bag of unrefrigerated food. And as much as people talk smack about AC economy airline food, a heated dish served to you out of the warmer is going to be far better than a crappy airport sandwich, or even one that WestJet sells you.

It's hard to take WestJet seriously for overseas travel when the food options are that lame.

Yes, especially long flights and overseas flights. If they are trying to attract non-Canadians as customers and have crappy offerings, some Canadians seem to love WestJet. but flying domestically vs overseas is a different game. Not going to impress even budget-conscious Europeans.

I can't imagine having to pack on your own takeout either, where do you put it in your cramped seat? who wants to eat straight away.

The food we got on the AC flight to Australia was really good. Got two hot meals, dinner and breakfast, both were good. And then in the middle a sandwich and something else. Was good too.

I flew with Qantas in Australia on a domestic flight and was surprised how everything was included. Headphones were free. They had free wine and beer, a hot meal, a snack and an ice cream snack and a chocolate. On a 4 hour flight.

We've had an A350 diversion into YYZ, I forget which airline. But no scheduled services yet.

And wasn't there an Asian 350 or two before that?
Is there many modern planes YVR doesn't have?

MTLskyline Oct 12, 2018 11:37 PM

Regional Sky will begin daily charter service between Montreal-Saint-Hubert and Providence, RI on Nov. 5.

747-8i.

Used to have one when Korean flew it here but they've since switched it up to a Dreamliner unfortunately. Was the only passenger version flying to Canada if I recall.

DrNest Oct 13, 2018 3:31 AM

Lufthansa flew theirs a couple of times on the FRA-YYZ route, but I believe that was a "last minute" aircraft swap rather than a regular schedule. It's a pity they don't fly it into YYZ regularly, I still like seeing the 747, and there aren't many airlines still flying them here.

YVR Airport will permit cannabis consumption in designated areas
DH Vancouver Staff Oct 12, 2018

Plan on getting sky-high before your next domestic flight?

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) recently released their regulations regarding cannabis consumption and possession to coincide with legalization.

As of October 17, passengers of legal age (19 in BC) will be able to smoke or vape cannabis in designated areas outside the terminal building, which coincides with the airport’s smoke- and vape-free environment indoors.

YVR’s FAQ on their website does not explicitly state that you can consume cannabis before a flight, but they do advise using caution when travelling internationally:

“Cannabis and cannabis consumption is illegal in many countries that YVR flies to. It is your responsibility to know the cannabis laws wherever you travel. Please keep in mind, YVR is a U.S. preclearance airport. If you are flying to the United States, in most instances you clear customs with U.S. Customs Border Protection (CBP) at YVR before boarding your flight. It is illegal to carry or be under the influence of cannabis according to U.S. law.”

Passengers will also be able to carry up to 30 grams of adult-use cannabis when travelling within Canada, although it is important to note that the legal age for possession differs among provinces.
