Yeah. I own a condo in Uptown Dallas and I'm amazed at how the city has changed in just 5 years. The Uptown/Downtown areas have filled in with 39 new highrises. I love the new Calatrava bridges under construction and the new parks as well. If it wasn't so hot in the Summers I'd move there.

The picture is of Uptown Dallas, just north of downtown. It's now filled in so much though you can't tell the difference between the two from a distance.

I like that. Extend it out another 6 or 7 ft and make the whole extension out of plexiglass, supported by cantilevered beams.

Somebody asked what floor that would be on. How 'bout the top floor of a 70-storey?

If I remember right I think it is somewhere around the 8th floor.

This amazing pool is at The Joule Hotel in Dallas and would be awesome if there was a pool like this on 5th Ave.

I think that Sports Arena is a legit problem, but probably not the most pressing. If I had some money to spend on the city my list would be:
Airport (with transit)
Navy Pier Complex
North Embarc Visionary Plan
Stadium
Parks downtown
Trolley line North
Sports Arena

hahahaha - I moved here from Dallas because of the heat! It's a cool town and boy can they get things done. What a contrast from the ridiculously run San Diego who can't do ANYTHING.

Watch this to see why Dallas has done so well and how San Diego is lagging behind so many other "can-do" cities. Please pay particular attention to the 1:33 point, because it has particular relevance to San Diego.

Yeah that pretty much sums it up. Why Dallas has such a thriving and diverse economy compared to a place like San Diego. There just aren't that many decent jobs for young educated professionals here. Life in SD is such a struggle for young people... It really is a shame when you think about what San Diego could have become if it had the proper leadership. :(

It's just hard to get stuff done here in SD.

Having grown up on the east coast, I'm really tired of people saying we just can't get stuff done here. San Diego is no different than any other city; however, people here tend to not raise their voices to their elected leaders. I'm used to thousands of people getting involved in every major situation that arises in a city. But here people don't speak up at the time, then complain later. And in my personal opinion, with the climate, scenery, and the waterfront, SD should be one of the top cities in the U.S.

I know the West Coast is known for its laissez faire attitudes, but come on, this is our city and our future.

That's EXACTLY what happens here. The problem though is that all the people getting involved are NIMBYs who don't want airports, stadiums, arenas, libraries, trolley lines, tall buildings, or anything else, because it might block their view, create traffic, create a little noise, or decrease their property values. The idea that decisions are made for the good of the city or region is completely foreign here.

One of San Diego's greatest problems is that its vocal majority are all NIMBYs.

I understand why it's happening. But if things don't change San Diego is going to be in a world of hurt in 10-15 years due to reduced tax revenues and lack of adequate infrastructure. My husband's business is moving its corporate offices from SD to Dallas due to CA taxes, the better airport access in Dallas, and better light rail. And I know of 3 other companies that are doing the same.

...and it's not like San Diego isn't already in a world of hurt. The city has been in the red for soooooo long as it is and yes, like you said, things are only going to get worse.

San Diego keeps jerking our emotions around. We hear about cool new projects then someone pisses on them. This town needs to learn how to be a city. It makes me angry that cities with less physical attractiveness have so much more in every other way. If SD ever gets it together the possibilities could be endless. It is very exciting and frustrating at the same time.
